Jim Lee And Dan DiDio On The End Of The Wildstorm Universe

images1.jpg

The changes happening behind the scenes this week are part of a greater campaign to reshape DC Comics and build a company for the future. Our responsibility as Co-Publishers is to find a balance between short term opportunities and long term vision; between our strengths in traditional print formats and the infinite potential beyond print; between our characters’ rich legacies in the past and the bright promise for the future they hold.

As we’ve said before, there’s much to celebrate about DC. The foundation for long-term success is already here.

The DC Universe features the modern adventures of the World’s Greatest Superheroes, as envisioned by an exciting mix of new and fan favorite comic book creators. Vertigo is committed to publishing cutting edge, creator owned comic books and graphic novels by a wide array of creative voices.

One of our first decisions of the Co-Publishers was to up the publication of MAD Magazine from a quarterly periodical to a bimonthly one. In the wake of that decision, the magazine has seen increased sell-through growth. And we’re thrilled that MAD’s brand of madcap humor now stretches across media, with a highly-rated television show on Cartoon Network. The Usual Gangs of Idiots are an important part of this company and pop culture.

As we move forward, we also have to acknowledge the need for change.

After taking the comics scene by storm nearly 20 years ago, the WildStorm Universe titles will end this December. In this soft marketplace, these characters need a break to regroup and redefine what made them once unique and cutting edge. While these will be the final issues published under the WildStorm imprint, it will not be the last we will see of many of these heroes. We, along with Geoff Johns, have a lot of exciting plans for these amazing characters, so stay tuned. Going forward, WildStorm’s licensed titles and kids comics will now be published under the DC banner.

After this week, we will cease to publish new material under the ZUDA banner. The material that was to have been published as part of ZUDA this year will now be published under the DC banner. The official closing of ZUDA ends one chapter of DC’s digital history, but we will continue to find new ways to innovate with digital, incorporating much of the experience and knowledge that ZUDA brought into DC.

We’ll be further expanding our digital initiative and making a lot more news in this space. As part of that transformation, the WildStorm editorial team will undergo a restructuring and be folded into the overall DC Comics Digital team, based in Burbank, which will be led by Jim Lee and John Rood. With nearly two million free downloads and hundreds of thousands of paid downloads, our digital foray is already reaching a new audience worldwide. We could not be more excited by the successful launch of our Digital Publishing products in June, which exceeded all sales forecasts and will be building on our early success with new applications for DC material on all major formats and hardware, partnering with Warner Bros Digital Distribution. It has extremely been rewarding to hear anecdotal stories of lapsed readers returning to the art form and of brick and mortar stores gaining new customers who sampled digital comics.

We remain, as ever, dedicated to working with the greatest creators this industry has to offer, while inspiring generations of creators and readers to embrace this medium that we all love.

Sad stuff. Wildcats was my first Image comic and Wildstorm was always my favorite imprint. Even through all of Jim Lee's and DC's attempts to kill the brand I stuck through it.

:smh:

^

You see what I am saying. Every time a book gets good and deals with finality...they got to close up shop.

The Authority
Wildcats
Gen 13 were solid reads after World's End.

Anyway, you know what's going to go down...they are going to be shuffled into the main stream DC U...just like they did Milestone and Impact comics...:smh:

so who do u think will start showing up in the top publications?

Voodoo first - DC can't say no to Tits and Ass and they know their readers can't either.

Mr. Majestic has already been in and out of the DCU and Superman books.

Grifter will be fighting Slade...that shit is already in the minds of so many artist and writers...

I don't think they will put The Authority in...not with Gay Batman and Gay Superman in that shit.

Gen13 will be in Teen Titans faster then you can say 'What the fuck happen to Wildstorm?'

That I wholly disagree with. All the WS titles were floundering after the disasterous World's End.

The Authority's heyday was the Ellis/Millar era
and I really miss Wildcats 3.0

All of The Authority (not their spin offs) were great. I own them all. But World's end and the books after are the natural progression if you ask me. The things/characters they were fighting were WORLD destroying...and get what...the world got fucked up.

How many World/Universe destroying events do the main 2 go through and nothing dreadful happens?

Wildcats - I could not care for UNTIL World's end and the books after.

Worldstorm is a pretty good indication why IMO. It was a last ditch hype-grab that failed miserably.

And post-Worldstorm continuity damaged a lot of characters, most notably, Gen 13 and the Authority (Jenny Quantum? the Doctor? Neutered.)

Hell it even ruined Welcome to Tranquility which was a nice little in-universe book.

Sort of my point though. You don't have to have these grand universe threatening events all the freaking time.

He's a good example of what I mean...

In Marvel, you have Shadow Land - Where DD is 'going on the edge' becoming a vigilante that murders to protect...Under Marvel we all know it's a big funky demon and not DD doing this and so the reset is coming and we read these stories with no true sense of hopelessness....

In Wildstorm...DD would have been just DD that had enough and is using this new opportunity to do some good with it...though in what many would believe a wrong way or direction...the day after this event would be bleak and would need some GOOD writing to make it right again...

BTW - The real reason why DC is dismantling the U is because they are prepping their books for 'Earth One' - They want to stream line their books so that casual readers will know the difference btw DCU and Earth One...they stripping all the resources out of WS to support this endeavor.

Good writing has been in short supply for the main WS books for years.

And DC/Jim Lee has been slowly killing the WS brand pretty much ever since the merger.

Yep. There was no way they were going to have an IMPRINT with Super Heroes over shadow the main universe...They did not want to have another "Watchmen" incident.

There was never a danger of WS overshadowing mainstream DC. Jim Lee just seemed to care more about drawing Batman than nurturing his baby.

Either way, Wildstorm, you will be missed.

There was never a danger of WS overshadowing mainstream DC. Jim Lee just seemed to care more about drawing Batman than nurturing his baby.

Either way, Wildstorm, you will be missed.

thank you Megs. I mean how times does the big 2 have "dire consequences" events and no ramifications, well at that are long lasting, come after it? With Wildstorm's World's End we got to see that even Superheroes can "fail"....

Dude is right, Jim is too focused on mainstream DCU, than on characters and a universe he helped created:smh:

Rest In Peace Wildstorm U........

sad new to hear about the WU.I remember when Jim left to start up the WU man, bought all i could afford with my allowance.... but I should have known this was coming when he took that position at DC:smh:
