John Lennon once claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Now President Obama has evidence that he's more popular than both.

Obama topped a new Harris interactive poll that asked 2,634 Americans who they admire enough to call a hero.

Jesus came in second on a list that includes God, Mahtma Gandhi and George Washington.

Other historic or notable figures making the top 10 were Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Abraham Lincoln, John McCain, John F. Kennedy, U.S. Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger and Mother Teresa.

Participants named the heroes randomly instead of being shown or read a list of people to choose from. The poll was conducted online between January 12 and 19, 2009.

At the 16th spot in the poll, George Washington, Bill Clinton and Colin Powell tied.

Other politicians who made the poll's top 25 include Hillary Clinton (12), FDR (13), Condoleezza Rice (12) and Sarah Palin (21).

God ranked 11th, between Mother Teresa and Hillary Clinton.

Of the multiple reasons participants gave to explain their choices of heroes, the ones most cited is, "Doing what's right regardless of personal consequences" with 89 percent, "Not giving up until the goal is accomplished" with 83 percent and "Doing more than what other people expect of them," with 82 percent. Also popular were "Overcoming adversity" and "Staying level-headed in a crisis."

In the first Harris Poll asking this question in 2001, Jesus came in first, followed by the Rev. King, Powell, John F. Kennedy and Mother Teresea.

Obama joked last year at a roast that contrary to rumors, he was not born in a manger but on the planet Krypton. Apparently, Obama is even more popular than Superman, who didn't make the cut.

There was no 'list' of options. The 'list' is comprised of which ever person/figure people most identified with as a hero.
By virtue of which Santa Claus theoretically could have made the list, but didn't. Nor did Superman. :hmm:

True... I'd take this poll with a grain of salt. After all, comparing Obama to Jesus & God is ridicuolus... Obama exists. :hmm:

Re: New Poll: Americans Regard Barack Obama As A Greater Hero Than MLK Jr, Jesus & GO

The poll obviously depends on who is on people's minds at the moment... I mean, Bush is still top ten along with that damn pilot with the name straight out of Loony Tunes.

Jesus will surpass Bush and Obama again, just give it a few decades... Being on a list like this after some time is more of an accomplishment, like MLK or George Washington... Obama will probablt have a shot at that status, Bush not so much.

But I'm sure this alone will be a good 15% of Sean Hannity's show tomorrow...

God came in 11th?? Not wise to piss off the Creator!

Did Obama pose for this pic? How is it that his head is centered almost perfectly inside that President's seal?

He looks like he's praying with a halo around his head.

With subliminal pictures like this, I can see why people chose Obama over Jesus!

Why do you want a bus to hit him:confused::confused::confused:
Oh, because he has a different opinion than you. Therefore he doesn't have a right to exist:yes::yes::yes:

Oh yeah, there is no such thing as Obama-worship

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
You didn't see Bush in the top ten? Or McCain, who beat out FDR and God???

This says more about the currency of present versus past than anything about the public and Obama... I hate to deny you an opportunity to go off on a favorite tirade but this really is a poor example for you to use.

Nigga it aint no "favorite" tirade. It's the truth. "allegedly" keeping us safe 9/11, "allegedly" ending The Great Depression, and being a War Hero, is the reason that Bush, FDR, and John McCain are on the list. My personal opinion is that all 3 of those guys are frauds, but at least there is a REASON for them being on there. Obama hasn't done anything other than get elected. That's it. He's not even falsely propped up with fake accomplishments like FDR, Bush, or McCain are. He's on the list for existing. That's the difference between him and the others.

People worship him for existing, nothing else. He hasn't done anything.

"Obama hasn't done anything but get elected," that's just laughable. That's like saying Ruby Bridges didn't do anything but go to school. It's a HUGE accomplishment that you are minimizing. Thirteen months ago people thought this impossible and just the psychological impact alone of images of a black president going out to little kids of every race is tremendous. Barack Obama put his life on the line and didn't just "exist" as you ridiculously claim but broke barriers, not just as the only black senator in the country, not just as the fifth black man elected to the senate since Reconstruction, but he ran a masterful campaign which put his peers to shame and outshined them to the Presidency.

He deserves the acclaim... Obviously there's a lot more to be added to the story and that will shape what should ultimately be said about him but you really fail to appreciate what he has already done.

Nigga, who brought up Ruby Bridges? And how can you compare integrating the schools in the segregated south to ANYTHING going on today.

Once again, what did has he done for anybody else other than get elected? And spare me the whole "the mental effect he's gonna have on everybody" Please, people said that every Black kid in Amerikkka was gonna play golf when Tiger Woods came out. Shit didn't happen. Y'all are worst than the Republikkkans with that sentimental symbolism shit

He's on the list because the media treats him like the Messiah.

Now, if he solves some problems, ends some wars, or does some shit like that, THEN I'll understand, but his whole "He's just inspirational" logic is stupid.

Roland Burris is a Black senator now, I guess I should be inspired:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'm not hating on the guy, just saying that if you believe in MLK and all he accomplshed in the Civil Rights struggle, then seeing some guy be revered without accomplishing anything tangible is mystifying. He could be a terrible president, then what? Are all the people who were inspired, all of a sudden giving up?

And how many times was Ruby Bridges on this list? Was she? I seriously doubt she was.

If you can't see that this is about the "Messianic" complex this country has with this ONE guy, then I don't know what to say to you. It is literally RELIGIOUS WORSHIP.

You stay "inspired". I'll stay in the real world where the Dow is headed towards 6,000, the war in Iraq is gonna last at least until the end of 2011, a war in Afghanistan, which just got ramped up, when we really should be ending all our involvement in foreign countries.

If he turns that shit around, then I'll personally come in here and say "He's greater than MLK and God", but as long as his claim to fame is symbolic, then NOBODY deserves to go above MLK. NOBODY.

Poll: Americans admire Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin
BY SUSAN PAGE • USA Today • December 30, 2009

WASHINGTON - President Obama is the man Americans admired most in 2009, a USA Today/Gallup Poll finds, while Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin are virtually tied as most-admired woman.

The close finish by Clinton, named by 16% in the open-ended survey, and Palin, named by 15%, reflects the nation’s partisan divide. Clinton was cited by nearly 3 in 10 Democrats but only 6% of Republicans, Palin by a third of Republicans but less than 1% of Democrats.

Obama dominates the field among men at 30%, though his support also shows a partisan split. He was named by more than half of Democrats but just 7% of Republicans.

While the president’s job-approval rating has eroded during his first year in office, his standing as the most-admired man demonstrates “a very strong fan base,” says Frank Newport, Gallup’s editor in chief. The only past presidents to score higher were George W. Bush in 2001, in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, and John Kennedy in 1961.

First lady Michelle Obama ranks as the fourth most-admired woman, behind Oprah Winfrey.

The survey, taken by Gallup almost every year since 1948, shows the nation’s broad judgment -- and name recall -- of politicians, popes and talk-show hosts. Presidents often lead the list, though as President-elect, Obama swamped Bush in 2008. This year, as last, Bush finished a distant second.

South African leader Nelson Mandela is third and conservative commentator Glenn Beck fourth. Evangelist Billy Graham, who has been on the top-10 list every year the survey has been taken since 1955, is sixth, just after Pope Benedict XVI.

Among women, Clinton continues an unprecedented 17-year run as the first or second most-admired woman. She first led the list in 1993 as first lady and has held the top spot for the past eight years as a New York senator and, now, the nation’s top diplomat. She lost a bid for the Democratic nomination last year. Palin was the GOP vice presidential nominee.

Among men, former president Bill Clinton ties for 10th with Tiger Woods, the golfer engulfed in a personal scandal involving extramarital affairs. Elin Nordegren Woods, the athlete’s wife, ties with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the ninth most-admired woman.

The poll of 1,025 adults, taken Dec. 11-13, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Note to Jesus-- "Daaaaamn, homie... Last year you was the man, homie... Fuck happened to you?"

Top women overall: Clinton, Palin, Oprah, Obama. Maybe Michelle can step up her influence?

Top men: Obama, Bush, Mandela... Glenn Beck. I weep for this nation. (Like Beck, ironically.) Then Pope Benedict XVI and Billy Graham.

Re: New Poll: Americans Regard Barack Obama As A Greater Hero Than MLK Jr, Jesus & GO

I mean the reason Obama would top the list is that i doubt people put a lot of thought into their answers. They probably gave the name of the first person they could think of whom they admired. Obama being a more recent historical figure would top the list. However if a paper poll was given listing the name of the options of various historical heroic figures next to Obama he wouldn't top the list and would be somewhere in the middle to the bottom (and i like the dude). Also is it fair to ask someone who they admired and take God as an reasonable answer.
