Real talk with AlexW partII: How do you swim thread?

As a grown man who is thinking about having children of my own, I need to learn how to fucking swim.

I have developed a phobia for swimming(almost drowned when i was 15) and I must conquer it.

Any hints, tips, dvds, swim techniques, and any other sort of advice would be helpful.

I looked up swim classes but that shit is nil in my area. They have shit for kids but I dont see anything for adults.

I have to learn though. Its something that I must do and its the only fear I have in life.

Im tired of vacationing and the crackas our gloating about the water activities they engaged in.

You fucking crackas, I want to swim with the damn dolphins too!!!!!

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Nigga, you have lived the alternate version of my life!

When I was 14 or 15, I nearly drowned after a dumb ass friend of mine pushed me into the pool (and he didn't know whether I could swim or not).

The pool had a 12 foot deep side and at the shallow end, it was like 3-4 feet. Luckily for me, I was pushed into the shallow end, but at the time I was pushed in, I didn't know how deep it was. I fell in sideways and I couldn't feel, nor did I know what side was up. I was drowning.

My brother pulled me up and out, but it was too late. I was traumautized. Can't swim till this day. I think I was able to doggy paddle at one point, but I can't even do that shit.

I spoke with an instructor at Lifetime Fitness gym who offers lessons. When I get the time, I think I'm gonna go for it. I might do private lessons to avoid the embarrassment. :(

But yes, I too, would like to swim with the dolphins and partake in the pleasures of the white man.

Regardless, not knowing how to swim hasn't stopped me from hopping on the jet ski though. Just give me the life jacket and I'm good to go.

Na fuck all that...I have a serious issue w/ the way many black Americans limit themselves mentally w/ all these bullshit ass stats and stereotypes...always quick to embrace some demeaning statistics white folks pull out their ass...

W'sup wit black folks? Why they always gotta push a nigga?

I feel like calling my homeboy right now and starting some shit on some "Nigga, your actions scarred me for life!"

I need one of those flotation device suits that the kids wear. The one that has the air cushions on the arms and legs? Gimme one of those and I will have no fear.

i need to learn my damn self. I'll get in the water no problem. but there's a limit on how much fun i can have :( Plus, obviously, its a survival skill.

I grew up on the north coast of Jamaica, about 1.5 miles from the beach. Funny enough, I never learned to swim until after I left home. But the first thing I had to do, even before learning to float, is to practice holding my breath under water.

Once you can comfotably hold your breath under water, and have no fear of the water going in your ear, your eyes, nose or mouth, you can take all the time you need to float, then eventually swim.

You can actually practice this in your bathroom sink or fill your tub with water and practice holding your breath under water. I swear, once you can do this, your lessons will go much smoother.

I got a white homeboy that I joke with about that shit. He knows I can swim better than him. Real talk though, my girl can't swim, and I am a water person all day, so that means I can't enjoy my water activities with her until I teach her how to swim.

Interesting I learned to swim as a young child by them throwing me in the water :dunno:

Same with me... i got dragged into the ocean by the homies and had to swim or die :lol::lol: shit wasnt funny than but thats how i learn and now my girl is a fish and my 2 daughter 9 and 6 learning quick without the lesson i keep them in the pool so i guess that helps

I'm self taught, but I know I'm doing it wrong. I use up way too much energy and don't go very far. I need to take classes and learn the proper way. I want to be able to go out at any depth and swim like a fucking fish. I especially want to do cliff diving, love heights and jumping off them, but if the water too deep, I'm fucked.

The best way to learn how to swim is doing it drunk I swear. I learned when I was younger because my older sibiling was a swimmer in high school and I learn from that person. But on some real, I swam the best when I was drunk.:lol::lol::lol:

and there u have it

Fam just to add to this thread. Was talking to my wife about this and she told me something. Even tho she is Guyanese and all her siblings can swim her mother couldn't swim. One day her mother and some of her friends decided enough was enough and got together in Guyana and got swimming lessons and learned how to swim. SHE WAS IN HER 50s!!

If she can do it you fellas can.

when i try to float, i always fucking sink

but ill grab those goggles on amazon tho

ill beat this

Real talk man, you're what we used to call a "rock".

Rocks sink.

I taught swimming as a lifeguard in South Central for 4 years. We would always get these kids that just had phobias about the pool.

You know what we did? Wet em up. Just had them lil bastards splashing for 10-15 minutes. That helped them get over their fear of water.

Once they could do that, I had them dunk thier faces.

Then open their eyes underwater, all while they could still stand up in the shallow end.

Then, basic floating, on your back. have someone (preferably a woman) support you under the small of your back when you float. You have to relax. After you learn to float with assistance, you can try it on your own.

Once you learn the back, learn the front. What you have to get used to is the feel of your body in the water. Even if you're muscle bound, you will still be able to float, albeit with your body at an angle.

But,if I were teaching you, I'd have you stand in the shallow end and get used to the feel of the water. Hold onto the sides and kick with your head in the water, only bringing it up for air once in a while.

And don't say you're too old, I had adult classes full of women 40-60 and I showed all of them how to swim. (Plus they always gave me money for "School" ;))

good fucking look

most colleges have education continuation classes. they usually include swimming classes for adults that start afterwork or on the weekends. you might want to try there. also after you finished learning how to swim, you have to keep up your skills. if you don't swim for a long time, you forget everything you've learned.

Guess I'm the only idiot that jumped off a diving board at the age of 11.:eek:

Never did that shit again! Matter fact if my feet can't touch the floor or the water is above my neck I ain't "swimming".

Seriously, Alex, you need to have a strong enough why. You need a reason and that is how I broke my "spell".

I still fear water to this day but if I have to survive I will once I relax.

I trained for a triathlon and it wasn't until the day of when I reached the shore on the other side that I knew I made it. I had 100% confidence going in ... but getting kicked in the face a few times cured that real quick.

The point is ... I got over my fear because I HAD to. I wanted to commemorate 10 years of my grandmother dying of cancer. So I joined one of those organizations that train you for a triathlon and in exchange you raise money from friends family etc. I learned how to swim and made my goal of raising about 1k for every year that she had been gone.

Trust me when I tell you, if I can do it you can do it.

no joke but take some swimming lessons at the y or your town's local rec department...swimming is a basic but great life skill to have...myself im like a fish in the ocean...i love swimming in that shit when im tipsy....shit's invigorating:cool:
