Pirates attacked The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship

(CNN) -- The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Mombasa, Kenya, was attacked Tuesday by Somali pirates, according to a NATO source with direct knowledge of the matter.

"The pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the vessel, which sustained damage," said a statement from New York-based Liberty Maritime Corporation, which owns the vessel.

The ship was carrying U.S. food aid for African nations, the statement said.

The pirates never made it onto the ship and the vessel is now being escorted by a coalition ship, still bound for Mombasa, officials said.

Two senior defense officials said the Liberty Sun was being escorted by the guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge. It is the ship carrying Richard Phillips, the captain of the container ship Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked last week. Phillips spent days as a hostage of the pirates before being rescued Sunday.

Katy Urbik of Wheaton, Illinois, said her son, Thomas, was aboard the Liberty Sun at the time of the attack. She shared the e-mails he sent as the ship came under fire.

"We are under attack by pirates, we are being hit by rockets. Also bullets," said one e-mail sent Tuesday afternoon. "We are barricaded in the engine room and so far no one is hurt. [A] rocket penetrated the bulkhead but the hole is small. Small fire, too, but put out.

"Navy is on the way and helos and ships are coming. I'll try to send you another message soon. [G]ot to go now. I love you mom and dad and all my brothers and family."

"My heart stopped after I realized there wasn't going to be a 'just kidding' after his comment," Katy Urbik said.

They don't get it. They have stuck their hands in a hornet's nest. It's just a matter of time before the bombs start dropping on those fishing villages. I wouldn't doubt that the US is sending drones along the coast taking pictures of where these pirating port stations are. Once they are catalogued:smh:No more boats ... no more pirates.

They had a good thing going; they hit trade ships from countries that willingly paid the ransom almost like a tax. But now they let pride get involved and insist on poking the bear.

I'd guy out and buy a map tomorrow, just for nostalgia; something tells me all the new maps won't have Somalia on them.

Im saying that there will be no political backlash in Asia, Europe or the US at the thought of deploying troops to go fight poorly armed Somalis in naval battles. The same can't be said for other lawless areas. Compare how nations that arent even effected by the pirates have sent naval ships to the area with how they participate in UN peacekeeping efforts.

Agreed and that isn't the reason anyone is responding militarily. They have only responded because commerce has been affected.
The fact they steal food headed toward their own countrymen just shows how much they really give a fuck about their own people.

If you don't think race has any place in global politics then you are deceiving yourself. You haven't seen any history of nations treating other nations differently in times of war along racial lines? Whatever those idiots get they deserve(the pirates not all Somalis). Idon't know if youre just mixing responses to different people or if all that is aimed at me, if its at me you dont understand the context of my response.
 
if food, clean water and things of that nature are the number 1 commodity, of course it makes sense to do this. I look at it as their only means to start an economy. Now they have something to sell. That doesn't make it right but americas business practices were founded in the same manner. Usually, when America allows a nation to endure this level of turmoil, that nation probably has some desired resource...just watch and pray
