Hardly. He'd worked consistently as a character actor in Hollywood for over a decade before he took a shot at self-financing his writing/directing debut (inspired by Spike's breakthrough, low-budget success). Where do you think he got his insight from?

No worse than some of Spike's more pretentious films (like She Hate Me). That didn't stop him. He just went right into his TV sitcom and then on to a number of successful TV films.
i remember first seeing him in a bit part in Cooley High(he was in that part where preach and cochise confronted damon in the gym when he found out that they snitched on stone and robert)

Not true. He'd been a steadily WORKING character actor in TV and film (including A Soldier's Story and Streets of Fire) for a decade before he then WENT BROKE making Hollywood Shuffle.
