More bad news: 50% of doctors want to leave medicine

Misleading post title, this is half of Primary Care Doctors which is 1 of the 30 different types of MD's/DO's. Primary care physicians are the least paid of all doctors. Yes I know they are necessary but why anybody chooses to become a PCP is beyond me. I did some rounds in Internal Med and hated it. Once you go through that grueling PGY1 doing internal medicine you'll be like what the fuck am I doing here. Hard Hard HARD work with little financial reward for the effort.

If we had national healthcare we wouldn't need 50% of the worthless fuggs. Prescribing medicine that is not needed and charging more for cure of the side effects. "Obama's in your azz, Doc......now get out of ours."

Good feedback, Dr. Truth. You're right, the title is kinda misleading, it should have said 50% of Primary care doctors. Based on this looming shortage, maybe ease restrictions on foreign doctors?

Plenty of Foreign docs are already here, Russians, and Indian, and middle eastern Physicians who have J1 Visas.

Probably will need more if many of the primary care docs bail out and if Obama's national health care service plan kicks in.

you a muthafuckin fool. these doctors are operating under duress from the insurance companies. see, the problem is that the most important service industry has been privatized by companies who only care about financial gain, and not the patients' well being.

the demise of the private doctor was the beginning of the demise of the health status of this country as a whole. doctors need to band together and fight the fda and the insurance companies. they need to lobby for freedom to treat people using actual knowledge of the body and not just handing out the drugs that big pharma can make huge profits on. this shit is a mess and doctors are fuckin sick of it. i go straight to the herbalist if anything is wrong with me besides a broken bone.

Shit.....

Im in Med school at a nationally ranked primary care school and the students HERE dont want to go into Family practice.

Im lookin at something with surgery but that includes a WIDE variety of specialties.

Im also lookin for some international programs for this summer or fourth year...... (Dr. Truth if you know anything about this or how I can practice in other countries hit me up!)

Chops,

You're right. Peeps would be crazy to go into GP cuz of the effort and low pay involved. Immigration should fix that right quick.

Yep. I can't tell you how many Indian and Russian OB/GYNs my wife work with. And they all have attitude as well.

Immigration of what? Doctors?

Man theres already a HUGE international influx of family practice docs from out of the country as Truth said.

Honestly, Ive seen more Indian general practice docs than a little bit

It depends on what the specialty is. My wife is an OB/GYN. I can't tell you how many of her colleagues have closed down their private practices because they can't afford the malpractice insurance. Others give up the OB portion of their practice. That way they just do exams and pay way less because they've stopped doing surgeries.

As for family practive docs. Yeah its true, they are the lowest rung on the doctor ladder. Other docs look down on generalists because they feel that since they aren't specialized in anything they just ain't as smart as others.

and therein lies the problem. the exorbitant fees for malpractice insurance forced alot of good doctors to bow to the hmo's or be put out of business. it's a dirty game and lives are lost because of it. this society is so fuckin rotten.

LOL at this ambulance medic!!!

But didn't most states pass medical malpractice reform laws? In CA, the damages are limited to 100K

You know there were specialist reponding to that survery, the propotion that were recieved the survey to that of PCP's was pretty low though...I will say this about the medicine profession, alot of people believe docs are just sitting around charging outrageous fees for doing little...when in actuality, it is the hospital and such other services that generates that large sum...for instance, a coronary artery bypass my show charges of 30-60K on your insurance record but in reality the doc is getting only 2000-4000 of that...also people dont realize what phyisician's have to endure and they dont realize how generous we actually are...what business do you know where the CEO of that company will come see you in the middle of the night at a moments notice and get dont even get re-imbursed 20-30% of the time...that is right if you dont have insurance we see your azz for free, no the hospital dont pay us, no the government dont pay us, we see them for free...it is funny I give people two hours of my time for free and they want to bitch...sometimes I just wish I was not at my professional setting so that I can just tell them the truth "bitch you are not paying me, in any other country you would be halfway into your deathbed"...I wont even speak about the all the years of sacrificing my time, energy, finances during undergraduate, medical school, residency, and fellowship...when mutherfuckers was going on spring breaks, I was spending my money (all my money actually)and time on study courses and study materials/tests...do we really complain about the hours we work and the conditions that we work, not really...I would like to see the average Joe 6 pack/plumber try being a physician for one day, no lunch breaks, work as long as you have to (not on a time clock, if you are needed you have to work), see motherfukers for free, have insurance companies not paying you money b/c you submitted your billing a little too late or hell they just dont want to cover it...well i am just rambling, but I dont know this if any more docs are lost the quality of care is going to plummet for right now you guys have the best of the best really taking care of you...when the second tier guys come in, watch all the horrendous stories skyrocket!!!

fight the power.

Why is it that elective medicine is so much cheaper than insured medicine? A lot of people are saying take out tax exemptions for health expenses by corporations and this will drop the price of healthcare. Yall agree with this?

Heres a tip for all of you budding docs.

Keep your practice when you get it and work for a medical school as a faculty or Dean of something. Most schools will pick up your insurance costs

And honestly, The patients kind of suck. Everyone wants to sue a doctor so they can get over on them. Anyone seen those lawyer commercials asking people to come in so they can sue doctors? Hilarious

My ex girlfriends father is a well known vascular surgeon in New Jersey and one chick tried to sue him saying that it looked like he stitched his initials into her body and now she feels violated and her husband doesn't want to touch her.

:smh:

what do you mean elective medicine is cheaper than insured medicine??? usually elective medicine (which I think you are speaking of cosmetic medicine and sorts) is not cheap, and it is all out of pocket...there are no poor cosmetic surgeons

I'm talking about Lasik eye surgery. But cosmetic surgery, taken as a whole is cheaper than regular surgery because much of regular surgery's cost is subsidized by insurance.

Yep. I can't tell you how many Indian and Russian OB/GYNs my wife work with. And they all have attitude as well.

They have horrible personalities also. Russian MD's especially relate to patients like cattle. They have a assembly line relation with patients. It's how they are trained in med school in Russia.

What school are you at? Are you getting your MD or DO or are Are you doing a Residency in Family Practice? General Surgery is ok, but I would recommend going into Radiology.

oh you are saying cheaper, meaning the cost out of pocket to patient...well I think lasik is getting cheaper b/c it is widely performed and the price derived from that market has predicted a lower price...it is such a simple procedure now and most all ophthalogist do it...alot of comestic surgery might be considered cheaper b/c it is a market driven price as alot of it soley out of pocket...as opposed to other surgeries where the price is really dictated by medicare reimbursement rates...

good read. i know a doctor, he says the shit is crazy what they are told not to treat if they don't think they have to, and what comes back rejected after they've done a procedure to help or save somebody. he said they lose longtime patients because their insurance won't allow them to see him, or see certain doctors, or get diagnosed for shit. If a doctor runs 2 or 3 tests to make of what you may have, the insurance company no longer wants to cover the tests that were (in their eyes) not necessary. The patients is then stuck paying for tests they feel they di dn't need and the insurance won't cover.
