What's the best fighting technique to learn for self defense?

Krav Maga -which is a variation of Japanese Ju Jitsu doesn't work in my opinion. I've watched a million fights on You Tube and I've never seen even ONE fight where someone pulled off a self defense move as practiced by Ju Jitsu practitioners.

I feel boxing is the number one form of self defense. Being able to hit someone 4 or 5 times in just a few seconds is great self defense. Boxers also train in being hit, which is also valuable in a real fight.

Second to boxing would be Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in my opinion. Most people don't know anything at all about grappling, so even if you aren't that good at groundfighting, you have a decent chance at getting a rear naked choke on someone if the fight hits the ground and you have a basic knowledge of grappling.

the Israeli special services shit its like 8 diff disciplines all mixed into one

I heard about this art. I believe some of it involves grappling - fighting on the ground. Since most altercations end up as a wrestling match anyway...best to know how to scrap when rolling around on the ground.

Perhaps you haven't watched MMA fighting, a great deal of those moves are Ju-Jitsu moves. Brazilian Ju-jitsu is alot of its own stuff mixed with traditional ju-jitsu. JJ is powerful, just not by itself, same with BJJ.

I always say Muay Thai/Kickboxing. Muay Thai teaches you to strike with your fists, feet, knees, and elbows. Do you know how hard your elbow is? Plus when you look at the MMA fights, which basically establishes alot of what is most effective, they all learn Muay Thai and BJJ. I's study Muay Thai first and then move into the BJJ. The stamina required for Muay Thai alone is a major advantage. But imo its the best of the striking arts, and the Marine Corp seems to think so as well.

Good luck finding a Krav Maga class. ANd then good luck on having them be friendly to a black man.

Thai Boxing > western boxing period. especially in a street fight.

Krav Maga is a very practicle system for getting out of a potentially bad and unpredictable situation quickly; it's a good choice for both men and women in real life.

It depends on the person.

Self defense is about awareness and catching your opponent when they don't expect to be struck and about using any weapon available.

It isn't about UFC, Boxing or any of the american/chinese martial arts cinema.

If you find yourself fighting a 'fair' fight you fucked up OR you should be in octagon or ring getting paid.

Self defense is combat, their are no fair ones.

Boxing. Learn where to hit cats and how to block or deflect their shots. Hit somebody in their kidney and watch them fold. Footwork keeps you off the deck rolling around. Most dudes can't hold their hands up more than a minute anyway.
Now if weapons are involved, you betta start talkin'.

Interesting answers, but isn't Kung-fu self defense? Like isn't it all based on counter attacks?

look up Genbukan Ninpo

Ive been studying for about 5 years now. Most complete fighting system i've trained in

i know alot of people are into muay thai and all but i like Kyokushin Karate. The training is brutal and its bare knuckle sparing.

But yeah if u want to learn how to defend urself though krav maga is good, muay thai is good, brazilian ju jitsu by itself is bad IMO. Think about it in the ufc it works because your only fighting one person, the streets is unpredictable and your probably going to be fighting more than one person in most situations, if u do bjj in a fight with multiple attackers and your on the ground with someone the other guys is just gonna beat your ass. ITs still good no doubt but i wouldnt use it by itself in a real fight. The best bet for you since your not trying to be in some combative sport and you just want some street affective stuff is just to do krav maga or something along those lines

Krav Maga is the best all-around system for the real world in my opinion.

It's totally based on threat and attack neutralization, control, and then leaving the situation as opposed to getting into a prolonged fight.

Find Mma(mixed Martial Arts Gym). This Way You'll Be Taught In Several Areas. Kung Fu, Karate, Jui Jitzu, Maui Tai, Wrestling, Boxing, Etc...

Been thinking of learning something on the side of my gym classes

Most definately Krav Maga, look it up on you tube. I am a former practisioner of Judo, Boxing and Karate. But Krav Maga is set up to deal with REAL LIfe street/club/robbery type shit. Extremely practical and fun to learn. You go at it full speed, punch and kick as hard as you can in class. I leave there every time hurting, but it's still lots of fun. Most Krav Maga studios give you the 1st class (1hr) for free to see if you like it. Go try it, and see for yourself.

Ive been training Brazilian Juijitsu for years.I've trained with numerous fighters who have fought in the UFC.IMO the best for self defense are:
1-Brazilian Juijitsu
2-Muay Thai
3-Boxing
4-Wrestling
IMO these work because you are consistently sparing against resisting/non-compliant opponents.other arts like krav manga and kung fu dont. And they dont work either.

First off learn to 'Not fight' man most fights last less than 2 minutes and you need to first off get your cardio up and secondly get out of shitty areas. Never rely on one fighting system exclusively and get out and get physical within whatever discipline you do learn. Gracie is good but you have to touch and get close. The Line fighting system is cool but same thing, grappling etc, etc. Learn at the basic level refine a few moves through motor muscle memory (techniques you do good and practice continusously) and if needed pack a piece. Also.....never, ever mix it up with a knife fighter. They will kill you ass-for real. holla

Doest really matter what you take...as long as your progress in it first spiritually and then physically.

Muay Thai
Boxing
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Judo
Kykoshin Karate

I've train in 3 Martial Arts and Boxing throughout my life....I 1st learned Judo as a kid moms wanted me to learn how to dfend myself...then Tae Kwon Do...Muay Thai and now Boxing...

in all honesty Muay thai is the best self defense disipline....

a clinch (plum) in a street fight with some deadly knees can really cause serious organ damage...

Muay thai is great cuz the dirty boxing is better than traditional boxing in a street fight.....the kicks are crazy strong and the use of elbows...knees a few throws (for the traditional heads) and a teep (push kick) to back niggas up.....can really save your life....

OP get into Muay thai...its really fun and it really works out your legs.....
