DETROIT – Kwame Kilpatrick was sent to jail for four months Tuesday for his part in a sex-and-text scandal and the judge chastised the disgraced ex-mayor for arrogance and disregard for the rule of law.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner's sentence was the finale to the scandal that destroyed Kilpatrick's reign at City Hall and threw local government into disarray for months.

"At a time when this city needed transparency, accountability and responsibility, you exhibited hubris and privilege at the expense of the city," the judge said.

He ruled that Kilpatrick not be given an opportunity for early release, a statement that caused confusion at the sheriff's department.

Spokesman John Roach said Kilpatrick probably would qualify for release after 100 days under a Michigan law allowing time off for good behavior. Prosecutor Kym Worthy agreed, but then both backed off by evening.

Kilpatrick, 38, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, admitting he lied about an affair with his chief of staff while testifying in a civil lawsuit in 2007. He also pleaded no contest to assaulting a sheriff's detective.

He was ordered to serve five years of probation and pay the city $1 million in restitution. Kilpatrick paid $20,000 to the city as downpayment on the restitution.

Kilpatrick declined an offer to address the court, but Groner had harsh words for Kilpatrick when he laid down the sentence.

"Ultimately what shocked this court and much of the community was your press conference after your plea hearing," the judge said. "That night, the community expected to hear a message of humility, remorse and apology. Instead, we heard an arrogant and defiant man who accused the governor, among others, for his downfall."

Outside court, Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, a former county commissioner, said his son was "railroaded."

One of Kilpatrick's lawyers was more conciliatory.

"I don't think there are any winners, just the end of a chapter," defense attorney Todd Flood told The Associated Press. "I think the mayor wanted this city to move on, and that's what we're doing."

Groner moved the hearing to a larger courtroom to accommodate media and spectators. As he waited for the hearing to begin, Kilpatrick sat back with an arm around his wife, Carlita. The ex-mayor smiled often and chatted with other family members and supporters seated nearby.

But once the hearing began, Kilpatrick's demeanor changed. At times, he was seen burying his head in his hands.

It was Kilpatrick's first public forum since the speech to supporters — referenced by the judge Tuesday — after his guilty plea Sept. 4. In that address, Kilpatrick lashed out at Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who was holding hearings to remove him from office, and told Detroit, "You done set me up for a comeback."

He was taken Tuesday evening to the Wayne County jail, where he will be in his own cell 23 hours a day. He will not be allowed to mix with other inmates during his one hour of recreation.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, admitted lying while testifying last year in a civil lawsuit filed by former police officers who had accused him of illegally demoting or firing them.

He and chief of staff Christine Beatty denied having an affair, but text messages obtained by a lawyer in the case — and later by the Detroit Free Press — clearly contradicted them.

They used their city pagers to arrange trysts and share sexually explicit desires. A fresh batch of messages was released last week, revealing that Kilpatrick, married with three children, likely had other lovers.

The messages first were publicly disclosed in January by the Free Press. Beatty quickly resigned but Kilpatrick hung on as mayor, even when prosecutors filed criminal charges against the pair in March.

The saga rolled through spring and summer as Kilpatrick hired a team of lawyers and public-image specialists and publicly ridiculed the case against him.

The City Council voted to hold impeachment-style hearings but a judge said it was illegal. Elected officials called on Kilpatrick to step down for the sake of the entire state.

Finally, he agreed to plead guilty and resign only after the governor began the public hearing in September that could have led to his ouster.

Ken Cockrel Jr. was promoted to mayor from council president. A special election to fill the balance of Kilpatrick's term will be held in May after the field is trimmed to two candidates Feb. 24.

It's not about the time it's about being labeled and having a record as a felon. He can never practice law again. All that time in law school, gone. Gonna miss the holiday with fam, lost his wife, lost his kids, lost the support of the people who backed him so he could be elected, etc. There is more to punishment than just time.

He's doing 4 months of 23 hour lock-down, solitary confinement.

That's some mad-house shit bruh. Whole different kind of time to do.

To get a sense for it, go lock yourself in your bathroom all day.

Uh, you do realize:
(1) He lied to Federal and State investigators - the other's did not.

(2) Multiple cases of fraud, abuse, and misuse of power and public funds were discovered (The Stripper party at the mansion, the Ford Expeditions, the firing and demotion of police officers for not following his bullshit and illegal orders).

(3) He was asked to resign - instead he gives and arrogant evening speech at a church saying that the other city council members were out to get him.

- AND FINALLY THE FUCKING STUPIDEST AND MOST ARROGANT OF MOVES -

(4) He then pleas out a month later, resigns, AND BEFORE SENTENCING DECIDES TO START JAWING OFF AT THE FUCKING GOVERNOR?!! saying shit like "you're just setting me up for a comeback":smh:

You can be a jury consultant without a law license. That pays a shitload. You can be an arbitrator without a law degree and THAT pays, especially if you get in corporate arbitration (ask me how I know). You can also be an ombudsman too. If he hustles, he can make 6 figgas.

You need to have credibilty, morals and good judgment to get into those positions. He's proved he DOESN'T .... pre and post. He's fucking dillusional. And arrogant.

No one is going to want him to be in corporate arbitration after this shit. Who would trust him to abritrate $100's if not millions on a deal. He couldn't even show the common sense to keep his ego in check and mouth shut.

6-figures is not enough when you owe the city $980K - and I'm sure they WILL garnish every fucking penny he makes.

Dude's credibitily is shit. Good luck to him.

I guess he could sit and be a jury consultant - picking and deleting people. That's really about it though.

Dude is gonna be living in his mommas house.
Is it true that he lost his wife or are people assuming because he was caught cheating, he lost her?

Its hard to feel sorry for a dude he was so flagrantly abusing the public's trust, and so arrogantly fighting back when he KNEW he was guilty. What an asshole.

Former Atlanta mayor Campbell now a free man

He spent two years in prison for tax evasion

By RHONDA COOK, BILL RANKIN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday, October 24, 2008
Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell is now out of federal custody, having served more than two years for tax evasion.
Campbell was released from home confinement at noon on Friday, U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Tracy Billingsley said.
Last month, she said, Campbell moved from a half way house in West Palm Beach, Fla., to his home. During that time, his travel was restricted, but he could attend church, go to work and see relatives so long as the halfway house approved it, Billingsley said.
Now, Campbell’s movements are limited only by the terms of his probation, which will last a year.
In March 2006, a federal jury convicted Campbell after a contentious, high-profile trial. Although jurors acquitted the former mayor of racketeering and bribery charges, they convicted him of evading taxes in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard Story sentenced Campbell, who served as Atlanta mayor from 1994 to 2002, to 30 months in federal custody. The former mayor shorted his sentence by 117 days because of good behavior.
Campbell began serving his time in August 2006 at the Federal Correctional Institute in Miami, a low-security prison camp.
Campbell was later assigned to a Salvation Army halfway house. He was transferred to home confinement on Sept. 19, prison officials said Friday.
He served his time at the South Florida facilities to be close to his wife, Sharon, and children, Billy, 25, and Christina, 19. After leaving Atlanta in 2003, the Campbells moved to a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
