Dumb and Dumber: Are Americans Hostile to Knowledge?

A popular video on YouTube shows Kellie Pickler, the adorable platinum blonde from “American Idol,” appearing on the Fox game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” during celebrity week. Selected from a third-grade geography curriculum, the $25,000 question asked: “Budapest is the capital of what European country?”

Ms. Pickler threw up both hands and looked at the large blackboard perplexed. “I thought Europe was a country,” she said. Playing it safe, she chose to copy the answer offered by one of the genuine fifth graders: Hungary. “Hungry?” she said, eyes widening in disbelief. “That’s a country? I’ve heard of Turkey. But Hungry? I’ve never heard of it.”

Such, uh, lack of global awareness is the kind of thing that drives Susan Jacoby, author of “The Age of American Unreason,” up a wall. Ms. Jacoby is one of a number of writers with new books that bemoan the state of American culture.

Joining the circle of curmudgeons this season is Eric G. Wilson, whose “Against Happiness” warns that the “American obsession with happiness” could “well lead to a sudden extinction of the creative impulse, that could result in an extermination as horrible as those foreshadowed by global warming and environmental crisis and nuclear proliferation.”

Then there is Lee Siegel’s “Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob,” which inveighs against the Internet for encouraging solipsism, debased discourse and arrant commercialization. Mr. Siegel, one might remember, was suspended by The New Republic for using a fake online persona in order to trash critics of his blog (“you couldn’t tie Siegel’s shoelaces”) and to praise himself (“brave, brilliant”).

Ms. Jacoby, whose book came out on Tuesday, doesn’t zero in on a particular technology or emotion, but rather on what she feels is a generalized hostility to knowledge.

She is well aware that some may tag her a crank. “I expect to get bashed,” said Ms. Jacoby, 62, either as an older person who upbraids the young for plummeting standards and values, or as a secularist whose defense of scientific rationalism is a way to disparage religion.

Ms. Jacoby, however, is quick to point out that her indictment is not limited by age or ideology. Yes, she knows that eggheads, nerds, bookworms, longhairs, pointy heads, highbrows and know-it-alls have been mocked and dismissed throughout American history. And liberal and conservative writers, from Richard Hofstadter to Allan Bloom, have regularly analyzed the phenomenon and offered advice.

T. J. Jackson Lears, a cultural historian who edits the quarterly review Raritan, said, “The tendency to this sort of lamentation is perennial in American history,” adding that in periods “when political problems seem intractable or somehow frozen, there is a turn toward cultural issues.”

But now, Ms. Jacoby said, something different is happening: anti-intellectualism (the attitude that “too much learning can be a dangerous thing”) and anti-rationalism (“the idea that there is no such things as evidence or fact, just opinion”) have fused in a particularly insidious way.

Not only are citizens ignorant about essential scientific, civic and cultural knowledge, she said, but they also don’t think it matters.

She pointed to a 2006 National Geographic poll that found nearly half of 18- to 24-year-olds don’t think it is necessary or important to know where countries in the news are located.

So more than three years into the Iraq war, only 23 percent of those with some college could locate Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel on a map.

Ms. Jacoby, dressed in a bright red turtleneck with lipstick to match, was sitting, appropriately, in that temple of knowledge, the New York Public Library’s majestic Beaux Arts building on Fifth Avenue. The author of seven other books, she was a fellow at the library when she first got the idea for this book back in 2001, on 9/11.

Walking home to her Upper East Side apartment, she said, overwhelmed and confused, she stopped at a bar. As she sipped her bloody mary, she quietly listened to two men, neatly dressed in suits. For a second she thought they were going to compare that day’s horrifying attack to the Japanese bombing in 1941 that blew America into World War II:
“This is just like Pearl Harbor,” one of the men said.
The other asked, “What is Pearl Harbor?”
“That was when the Vietnamese dropped bombs in a harbor, and it started the Vietnam War,” the first man replied.
At that moment, Ms. Jacoby said, “I decided to write this book.”

Ms. Jacoby doesn’t expect to revolutionize the nation’s educational system or cause millions of Americans to switch off “American Idol” and pick up Schopenhauer.

But she would like to start a conversation about why the United States seems particularly vulnerable to such a virulent strain of anti-intellectualism.

After all, “the empire of infotainment doesn’t stop at the American border,” she said, yet students in many other countries consistently outperform American students in science, math and reading on comparative tests.

In part, she lays the blame on a failing educational system. “Although people are going to school more and more years, there’s no evidence that they know more,” she said.

Ms. Jacoby also blames religious fundamentalism’s antipathy toward science, as she grieves over surveys that show that nearly two-thirds of Americans want creationism to be taught along with evolution.

Ms. Jacoby doesn’t leave liberals out of her analysis, mentioning the New Left’s attacks on universities in the 1960s, the decision to consign African-American and women’s studies to an “academic ghetto” instead of integrating them into the core curriculum, ponderous musings on rock music and pop culture courses on everything from sitcoms to fat that trivialize college-level learning.

Avoiding the liberal or conservative label in this particular argument, she prefers to call herself a “cultural conservationist.”

For all her scholarly interests, though, Ms. Jacoby said she recognized just how hard it is to tune out the 24/7 entertainment culture.

A few years ago she participated in the annual campaign to turn off the television for a week. “I was stunned at how difficult it was for me,” she said.

The surprise at her own dependency on electronic and visual media made her realize just how pervasive the culture of distraction is and how susceptible everyone is — even curmudgeons.

People think its cute to be dumb. Its really easy to notice when dealing with people in your everyday routine. Seems like 3 or 4 times a week Im looking at someone with the 'Are you serious?' face.

It all stems back to the educational system. One example is the damn FCAT test in FL. All year round kids are practicing for a TEST. Nevermind the other subjects... A Test! The high school curriculum does not prepare students for real world application either. I think they need to focus on finance, world politics, health, math and specific career paths.

IN THE HOOD BEING SMART IS REALLY LOOKED DOWN UPON.

I HAVE MET MANY FINE WOMEN THAT I JUST COULD NOT HOLD A DECENT CONVERSATION WITH. SOMETIMES I TALK TO HOOD KATS,WHEN I BEGAN TO TALK ABOUT BUSINESS THEY GET VERY VERY QUIET.THEY END ALL CONVERSATION WITH ME BECAUSE THEY CANNOT RELATE (MIND YOU I TALK LIKE A BLACK MAN,INTELLEGENTLY BUT I STILL KEEP THE BASS IN MY VOICE ---AND I DON'T TRY TO USE FANCY WORDS TO MAKE THEM FEEL DISCONNECTED FROM ME.)

(BLACK MEN --STOP TAKING THE BASS OUT OF YOUR VOICE TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE.I SEE THIS SHIT ALL THE TIME IN BLACK MEN THAT ARE IN CORPORATE AMERICA.)

I GET TIRED OF HAVING TO PLAY DOWN MY INTELLEGENCE WITH PEOPLE I GREW UP WITH AND I HATE HAVING TO TALK ABOUT SHIT ONLY THEY CAN RELATE TO.

MANY TIMES I FIND MYSELF AVOIDING PEOPLE BECAUSE WE JUST CAN'T MATCH WITS.

So are you guys blaming the education system solely???

Is a teacher supposed to teach a kid everything he/she should know???

:confused::confused::confused:

There is a misguided philosophy in America where people believe that the school system is responsible for teaching our kids. (In a perfect world) Of course parents are supposed to teach their children. Problem is, there is no cultural foundation to go by. There is no gameplan passed down from generations past. When the kid isnt in school we expect the TV to do the rest, meanwhile between learning his ABC's little Billy just saw a commercial for toys. Distractions which lead to A.D.D. which leads to the want for INSTANT GRADIFICATION.

Who has time to study or learn when I all I have to do is 'Google' it.

BTW, this isnt a black or white thing - Its an American thing. Sadly when other nationalities are exposed to the American lifestyle they lose their way also.

The education system isn't completely to blame. they are to blame for presenting the student with meager amounts of information. The entertainment industry is responsible for creating a culture that disdains even the meager amounts of information the schools offer. finally, the parents share in the blame because they fail to defend their children's developing intellect from pop culture brain rot and overdosing their kids on TV.

From the perspective of the extremely intelligent......most people are to dumb to hold more information than a cell phone.....couple phone numbers, a lot of songs, MAYBE a to-do list is all the average person can hold in their head at one time. Lets not even talk about international events/locations, history, and pray JESUS not math or science. I heard a nigga say "trees make wind" IN COLLEGE! This was the argument...."where does air/oxygen come from?" I said "trees". He says, "whats wind made of?" i said "air" he says "so trees make wind!" I said "look fool, trees dont wave by themselves and FAN wind around stupid....fuck is wrong with you... The sun causes wind...by making some air hot and some air cold, so it rises and falls, plus the earth spins, plus the ocean/tides.....nigga come on this is junior year..you learn that shit in 6th grade mmber the spiky cold front models and shit......blank look. Im tellin yall.......MOST PEOPLE ARE JUST DUMB.I personally blame females...if you all, who decide who breeds and who doesnt, would stop having babies with all these STUPID ASS NIGGAS the we wouldnt be inthis predicament....:D

:yes::yes::yes:

Wrong, its the parents. I could read the washington post at 3, what I couldnt outright "read" (big words), I could sound out...and then read after i figured out what it was supposed to sound like.....how many 3 year olds have I met that can read.....ZERO....but I taught my girlfriends son to read in a week and a half. He turned 3 in September I cant remember NOT reading....and it was why I knew/know so much more than 95% of people on earth (having a good sized library in the house helped too). T.v. was great, but we didnt get cable till 92...i wasnt allowed to have a tv in my room til college. Parents need to present their kids with more opportuniies to learn on their own. I learned on my own...mom dukes broke some adult shit down for me...but basic world knowledge, countries capitals, muntain ranges, wars, presidents, basic science. you have to make your kids think that shit is cool at an early age, and not let it be shaken. cause once kids think learning is dumb/geeky/or inferior, or a waste of time....its over for you. Who still gets national geohraphic? as a kid i loved those magazines....popular science..3-2-1- contact.....Yall, who call yourselves "parents" are the ones fuckin shit up. Not the MEDIA, or DISNEY, or HANNAH MONTANA, its you lazy ass so-called parents turning the raising of your children over to dora the explorer. Look at YOUR colleagues, you over 40 bastards, they are the ones that made COOKIE MONSTER eat BROOCOLI! need I say more?

I tell you, most of y'all are missing the point. It has nothing to do with individuals as much as it has to deal with the whole...and when I say that I mean the government. This government doesn't want you to think for yourselves...come on now! You think any government that would give "stimulus" money back to you, a measly $600 or so dollars so you can then go right ahead and spend it away, really thinks that the majority of it's citizens are intelligent?

The reason why we as a whole in this country are dumbed down is because it makes it easier for them to manipulate and control us. There isn't a great threat anymore like there was in the 50's and 60's with the Soviets or the communists as a whole. We pushed ourselves harder then to excel in math and science because we were up against a REAL threat. The shit that we deal with now is fabricated.

That's one way you should have been able to realize that this "war on terror" is bullshit...if it was that much of a threat as the Bush administration had lead this country to believe, wouldn't you have pushed for better intelligence in your citizens, military, central government, and school curriculums if you saw it as being a long term threat? What did this asshole do?...he continued to even dumb down the central government, all in the name of profit and manipulation of the general population. THIS IS NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORY...Seriously look around at the state of things and you will realize that even if teachers took the initiative to teach the kids what they ought to know, it would result in them hitting a wall at some point. It's up to parents, who have also been dumbed down to an extent, to teach their kids, and it's up to adults to unplug from the nonsense and teach themselves...

Thanks for bringing the issue up brova kaya...First and foremost let me say that the most ironic thing about this article and the issue at hand is that in this age of having knowledge and information at your fingertips through various outlets (internet, books, magazines, etc.), American society has seemed to have dumbed itself down quite reasonably...You would think that a persons ability to gain access to information and knowledge gets more progressive as time goes on, he/she would hence become more knowledgable...but almost seems as if the oppositie is true...Now with that being said, the education system will take the primary blame but it comes down to the parents sharing an interest in their childrens learning development...I could go on and on...but I have to roll so Im going to end saying that one of my biggest gripes about rap music/hip-hop now and days is how the thought process/intelligence has been for the most part taken out of the music...just my thoughts...peace out

I'm fifty/fifty on this one. I talk to a lot of people from various backgrounds and livelihoods, and it is obvious on the block that cats want better and knowledge is power ANYWHERE. The reality is though, there are just as many forms of knowledge as there are people on earth. My friends weren't good at determining the yield of NaHCO3 + H2NME + 2CHO + 2COOH + 0, but if I ever fucked up some money, they knew how to bring that crack back from out of nothing. And that ain't common sense, even vets pay other people.

Even in corporate amerikkka, you find the same type of situation. I've had conversations with supervisors who knew nothing about a particular technology, but they knew how to sway a company decision in their favor.

All great civilizations make pets out of their citizens. And amerikkka has learned this art better than most due to slavery. The premise is if you don't need to know it to make a dollar,be famous, or get pussy then why bother? And most people who have knowledge hoard it, mainly because in a society like ours, there is some wisdom to it. It takes time and discipline to build an understanding of a concept to the point were merit will be forth coming, and most people in amerikkka want whatever it is now....

Blame bush and the state of entertainment,tv internet, myspace etc etc & parents nowadays bush for the leave no child behind bullshit it's dumbing down the children, parents who let their children watch all the bullshit thats on tv without making them read some books that educate their minds it's really sad to see what the future is gonna be like cause i see folks getting dumber by the minute.

:lol::lol::lol:

This shit literally made me laugh out loud! It's a shame that there a so many people out there that exercise the same logic...

Everyone is talking about providing the right environment for your kids etc....

However, this is assuming that the parents also read.

A lot of adults DO NOT READ!!!

Beyong the magazines, there is a large %age of this population that doesn't read.

For the men, look at the women you dated and tell me that they would at least read a book.

A girl I was dating had a nice library of books she was interested in reading.
She never read them. All image.
She said that when she gets home form work she just wants to relax i.e watch TV
I asked her how she is going to cope if she had kids and a husband:confused:

Similarly I'm sure women on here could share similar experiences with the men they date not reading.

In light of the above, how do we expect parents to set an environment for kids to do something they themselves don't do (read)???

What else are we going to blame on Bush???? :smh::smh::smh:

i'm glad my only resolution was to learn something new each day thats of relevance to life..... why should a person reject knowledge in general? i think ignorant people are hostile to knowledge, not Americans in general........

Words of truth...............

americans are lazy and complacent. they do the bare minimum to get thru and thats it.

americans are lazy and complacent. they do the bare minimum to get thru and thats it.

I could see that.

Being told as a kids that you are the best because you are American does really motivate one to aspire to anything great really.

American is the best. You are the best because (solely) you are American.

Sounds like it doesn't require any effort by anyone, the kid, the teachers, the parent, the employee, the boss etc....

HA! The worst was when I went to this 99% white prep school here in the states. I really wanted to vomit. This teacher told the class "you know the cream that rises to the top of the milk? you know the tiny film on top of the cream? thats what you are" I said "you mean the scum on top" and I got kicked out of class. Those kids who now hold all type of positions of power were the dumbest and laziest I ever met in life. It actually is frightening. I made a fortune there selling papers and such.

So you made the school 99% white?

It's like a mold......... follow this and you will "succeed".

They do appear to succeed provided success is measured in terms of the eurocentric worldview.

In reality it does nothing for the self.

this school was fucking ridiculous. there was exactly one token black boy and girl in each grade. one token asian of each gender and one token latino of each gender. i addressed the student body on this for public speaking and got in trouble again

all the white kids had to do was be "popular" and have the "right friends" and be a carbon copy and they were set for life regardless of knowledge or intelligence or anything else. that is how this country works. just look at the current president.

Man I just "READ ALL THAT SHIT" and it makes sense.
I read books damn near daily. Yet most people dont touch em.

At my work, there are at least 200+ people that work there, yet myself included. I only know maybe 10, that actively read on lunchbreak. The rest just have cellphones on their ears...

Hell Most think this..
日本語/じゃ派寝せ. Is Chinese.

They think "et moi" and cool to say "Que Pasa" without knowing what the fuck they are talkin about. Hell some morons I know think Tokyo is a country.

there is some knowledge being dropped up in here for real. I'd spend my whole time just co-signing everything...

but let me add my 2 cents...after I went to college, I found out that CP time (black folks always late) is a myth, and that the school system is at fault for failing our kids, is a myth too...I'll tell u why briefly

-athletes
-greeks

Athletes (football players) are required to be at practice EARLY in the morning, sometimes like 6 AM and if they are late they are punished...also, have yall seen the playbooks these dudes have to learn!?! esp. the QB's...they are bigger than most college textbooks...and guess what, even the "dumbest" most slurred speech having thugged out dude on the team will learn that book front and back...

same logic for greeks: they have to learn an insane amount of information in a very short period of time, and most of the time that information they have to learn interferes with their school studies...but guess what: THEY LEARN IT!!!

bottom line - if mofoes wanted to learn THEY COULD!!

Then what is the problem!!!

Why don't they want to learn?????:confused::confused:

- because black folks have swallowed that bullshit lie that an education is worthless b/c once you get it, "da white man" is going to swallow you up and you won't amount to shit anyway despite your hard work (thanks to jesse and dem)..but I'll that there
