yep and the only reason voyager didn't get cancelled after four seasons was cuz they introduced her..

for the last 3 seasons of that show nearly 50% of the storylines involved or revolved around 7 of 9. There were rumblings among the cast about that because she was dominating the screentime.

I read that in the beginning of the series kes was supposed to the star trek "babe" in the tradition of uhura and troi...but she didn't work out and ratings were flagging...

Kathryn Janeway Star Trek: Voyager - Series

Easily. Next to the original Star Trek--which was only good because of its novelty, Voyager is the best Star Trek to date. It had an original story line, better writing, and each episode was usually very good.

I seem to be the opposite of some people. I never watched the UPN Star Treks. I finished with the end of DS9.

I grew up watching the reruns of TOS and was mildly fascinated. Kirk was a character I could understand from watching westerns with my grandfather.

Picard was more of a tactician, a field general. He never was the one to run in and get his hands dirty, he had an away team for that. (Kirk always went to the planet, Picard hardly ever did.)

Both were like the old shows where the traveler encounters new people going from town to town (The Fugitive, The Saint, The Incredible Hulk)

DS9 was different. It was stable. It was not Gunsmoke or Wagon Train, it was Bonanza, ER ... the drama came to them. So you had the same locales with new characters showing up. It was not all the hope and optimism of new discovery from being on the Enterprise. It was the dark and droll everyday life of manning an outpost. But there was a sheriff in town. Sisko and Odo were Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. They kept the law, but the law was not always clean. There was human (and non human) depth. They allowed the characters to go places that the action junkies could not go.

I have fond memories of TOS as a kid. I loved TNG as a teenager. But if I would have a chance to have a new edition of series on DVD ... it would be DS9. So my vote has to be for Benjamin Lafayette Sisko.

IMO the best to worse:

# 1 - James Tiberius Kirk Star Trek Original Series & Movies - Kirk didn't waste too much time trying to be a diplomat, he kicked ass. Still the best series and would've been better had they had CGI to assist in their special effects.

# 2 - Jean-Luc Picard Star Trek TNG - Series & Movies A signifigant drop off from the kick ass approach of the original series but many of the stories were better. The Borg battles IMO saved this series.

# 3 - Benjamin Lafayette Sisko Star Trek: Deep Space 9 - Series Good captian I only wish they had better scripts for the show.

# 4 - Jonathan Archer Star Trek Enterprise - Series maybe suffering from over exposure. After 40 years of Star Trek its tough to keep this going and fresh.

# 5 - Kathryn Janeway Star Trek: Voyager - She was the absolute worse captian of them all but I'm not blaming her. They had horrible scripts. How many times can you have your ship invaded? You got weapons use them. Then get your ship jacked and you and your crew left on a planet. Voyager was nothing more that "Lost in Space" rehashed with a different set of characters.

I had always hoped they wound find their way home so that Janeway could be court martialed. This was the worst captian of them all.

It's only a competition between Kirk and Picard. Janeway had only one emotion, I cal it "sir". Sisko never went anywhere except for the Holodeck. Because Shatner has become so campy, people forget the impact he has had on the medium of TV. AND ALL OF THE MOVIES WERE GOOD!! (Only V wasn't great) BUT...

Picard killed it with "Engage" and "Come"
Plus, the Borg and Q angles. Ridiculous.


As far as acting depth, it's Sisko. Watching reruns now, Avery Brooks should have won multiple Emmy awards for some of the performances he put in.

That being said, you can have your ship invaded that many times, or more, when your in foreign terrioty. There are at least 79 billion galaxies in the universe. Star fleet had encountered and had influence on maybe 100 galaxies.

The premise of Voyager is that it was stranded billions of galaxies away from humanity as we know it, in hostile terroties. Voyager was strandred and billions of galaxies away from any allies, and Janeway as Voayager's captain was without the benefits that Kirk and Picard had.

If Voyager encountered something hostile it could not rely on Star Fleet/other Federation ships to help it. Of course,if your 74 billion light years away from an ally your ship is going to get invaded. Under such circumstances, you can't have a George Bush/Captain Kik/Captain Picard mentality. You have to negotiate and sometimes settle for less because you have a weak bargaining position. Kirk, or Picard, would have been too gung-ho and would not have brought Voyager home. Hence Janeway succeeded because she didn't have male hubris.

Janeway used diplomacy first, and force only when absolutely necessary to protect her crew and traverse some 70 billion light years to get her crew home. Kirk and Picard didn't have to face such odds. Moreover, if they did their bravado would have caused them to fail.

Most peeps don't realize that shows like "TNG" and DS:9" were like tapestries. Most actions committed by the captains and their crews had further consequences on down the line. Not many "stand alone" episodes. And that was more so with "DS:9". Shit was like a fuckin' painted canvas with interwoven stories. And that's what I always like about it, besides its dark tone.

I will give a nod to "VOYAGER". I did like Kate Mulgrew's "Hepburn" attitude towards her role. But I found the show very weak at times.

Only problem i have with the bolded stuff is that StarFleet NEVER left the galaxy. They had influence in just over 200 STAR SYSTEMS.

Until the Dominion War you have to admit that DS9 was more like The Love Boat Meets Star Trek....People would come on board and we'd follow their problems while the captain ran around making sure everything ran smoothly..

firstly, how did i not see this thread?

Secondly, sisko was my favorite. He was the most human out of all of them.

1) He had a wife. None of the other captains had an actual spouse
2) He was a father. Kirk didn't know about his son until he was a grown man and Picard had a "son" for half an episode
3) He had a great relationship with his father. janeway's father was dead and picard's father died hating him for joinging starfleet
4) He cooked
5) He was not afraid to show emotion. kirk never cried, Picard only cried when his brother died and when he was tortured.

J.L. Picard was THAT dude, but J.T. Kirk was by all means the best of the best. He loved his crew and ship so much, that he left Starfleet (with the damn ship), and cruised through space as a pirate! Slept with just about any race/species, and no trace of VD.
