I'll say that over my dating life I've gone through phases. When I was young in HS I dated a lot of latin guys or what I call Prince/ Al B Sure look alikes. That was the thing back then. Then I went through a golden-brown to dark chocolate phase in college. Now as a grown-up,I'm phaseless. I like it all.
...and let me just say that its not always a preference that dictates who we date. My best friend has accused me many times of only liking "pretty" ninjas (light) but I told her those are the men most likely to ask ME out!
Men are much more strict in my opinion about selecting a mate based on complexion preference. Look at the mainboard thread titles almost always specify complexion. On a female board the title will just say something like "Look at this fine brother- not look at this redbone brotha, redbone brother lovers only," or some stupid shit like that. But admittedly there are a lot of color struck clown ass women too. I get on women about it when they make stupid remarks. Its not fair to gripe and complain about black men and then turn around and do the same thing.
As long as the men that are attractive to me, likewise find me attractive I'm good!

As for me I really don't check for complexion. However if the situation like DarkOne described were to come up it would be the darker skinned to get my attention. However if he cant hold a real convo and the lightskinned brother can I'll turn my attention to the one who wouldnt bore me.

The reason I said that is it seems that when you ask a question like the OP said, the responses you get are always "Oh I love dark-skinned men" when real world observation shows the opposite. The answers are always the exception to the rule. She "cooks everyday/cleans the house/sucks a mean dick/doesn't nag/the opposite of the negative behavior presented in the question".
However, if you ask a question of a man, you will get a variety of answers. Some brothers WILL say they like women of other races, etc etc. I'm just speaking from observation and not judging. Plus I was semi-joking.
