New Orleans for ONE DAY: Where I Gotta Eat???

BGOL, I am counting on y'all cats.
I've been consulting in Chicago all week, I have a chance to spend tonight in New Orleans, I haven't been since Katrina. I'm at the airport now and decided who better to ask than the BGOL crew.

I'm gonna be surrounded by California white folks, so I don't trust them. Anybody got some bomb places to eat in the N.O.? I'm looking for some boiled crawfish, some etoufet (sp) not Emerill's.

I'm gonna have to shut my laptop off in a few, so I can't bump the thread. Any help is much appreciated.

Praleine Connection, Downtown 2 locations, behind the french Quarters and By the SuperDome. Some of the best food Ive had in my life....

Soul food and Creole/Cajun food

Man crawfish is gonna be hard to really come by because its out of season. But Praline Connection is good, as is Port of Call which looks like a dive but has some of the best hamburgers in the world. Dooky Chases reopened and its fuckin good.

Dooky Chase's 2301 Orleans Avenue New Orleans, LA 70119, Phone: (504) 821-0535 (504) 822-9506

Port of Call - 504-523-0120, 838 Esplanade Ave.

Lemme know what happens.

I second the Praline Connection idea. Straight soul food.

If you can't shake your white crew...try Drago's at the Riverside Hilton or in Metairie on 17th street behind Lakeside mall. They have the world's best char-broiled oysters. That's the only way I eat them and the only place I eat them.

It will be hard to come by crawfish or crabs, right now. There out of season and will be very small and overpriced.

Good luck

I wish I thought to make a thread like this at the end of July. I was in Louisiana for 1 day and we went to this place called "The Gumbo Shop" and some other bar type spot. Needless to say I was a little dissapointed. Thats what happens when you have a white guy who got his restaraunt suggestions from an older white guy telling everyone where they should eat.

cant go wrong with that stop, never been their but have fam that only eat their when down there,

 I was gonna say Port of Call at first then I thought--"Well that's not really 'New Orleans' type food." Fuck it--Port of Call is the shit. Go to Port of Call, get a cheeseburger, baked potato, and a "Huma Huma" and call it a day.

Oh yeah--I always thought the Praline Connection was overrated and overpriced. :dunno: There's a lot better "hole in the wall" places--they're just hard to find or in the "hood".

Yeah man that Gumbo Shop is just for tourists. Might as well go to Popeyes and get the crawfish etouffee for all that.

I appreciate this. I can't shake the white cats cuz the job is being real nice flying us to NO for no reason other than I asked.

I'm gonna do both Praline Connection and Port of Call. Unless I REALLY need to eat at Deannies.

I don't know how I feel about eating some place called "Dooky Chases"
But I hella appreciate the address and phone numbers.

Last time I was in New Orleans I ended up in the Gumbo Shop.
The place looks nice, the backyard patio ambiance is cool.
After eating the food, I wanted to kick the fucker who told me to eat there in his teeth and gums. Don't EVER eat there.

I ate at Oceana the next day and liked it. But none of those spots were "Black" enough for me.

thats one of the most recognisable places in New Orleans

Deanies, Landrys tastes like shit to me. At Deanies I don't know why they don't put every order on two plates cause thats how much shit you get.

cosign, do Deanie's for seafood, Prailine Connection for Soul Food, if you're in Metairie do Sweet Fire & Ice for business dinners

Pampy's is good, just a bit controversial if you know what I am sayin. Ever go to Williams on Toledano St. before the storm? That was the shit.

I know what you're sayin I went to school with a few Barre's, but naw I never been Williams tho

You went to Aug? Williams was a hole in the wall joint. Good food though. You know what I really miss? Barrow's Catfish. Man o man.

I agree with these suggestions, but would just add Olivier's (only black restaurant in the Quarter) and Upperline...

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

for a GREAT burger, port of call is THE place to go. if you're gonna stay in the french quarter area, and if you want some fresh seafood, go to Cafe Maspero (on Decatur right across the street from Jax Brewery); there WILL be a long, long line for dinner. and don't forget to order the $3 strawberry daiquiri (32 oz) at Maspero... not much alcohol but TONS of flavor.

for breakfast, go to Lil Dizzy's on Esplanade and Claiborne-if they still serve breakfast.

if you're walking on bourbon and want to sample some awesome red beans & rice, hit up Court of Two Sisters.

Pampy's... etc. are all good places as recommended earlier.

I just got back from there Monday. It's so many great places to eat, but my favorite was this po'boy spot in the french quarter, for the life of me I can;t think of the place but it's next to this jazz spot...
once I think of it I will post the name...btw what kind of food are you looking for?

I went to St. Aug for a minute in the fall of 98, I didn't finish from there tho. I heard about Barrow's but never went. One of the things I hate most about Katrina is missing out on shit.

we both know all the good eats is in the hood, but one wrong turn in NOLA, and that nicca's family wearing black.

just playing...

but We Never Close does have some awesome poboys if he feels like traveling out there.

and i didn't want to turn him on to chinese or mexican-since he was in NOLA. i figured some good creole soul food would be best for a tourist... but Chinese Kitchens is FAMOUS for their food.

i've never been to that mexican spot... is that new?

well, when you eat breakfast the next morning before your trip back, stop by Cafe Dumonde ( www.cafedumonde.com ) and get a Beignet (pronounce ben-YAY) and maybe come coffee if you like coffee. It is french quarter if i remember correctly. Going to New Orleans and not getting a beignet is like going there and not getting a hurricane or not getting gumbo or not getting a shrimp po boy.

Yeah you must go there, and go to the one in Quarter dont go to the in the mall

Y'all fucked my trip up. I'm still here. I "missed my flight"
So I have to pay for my flight home and get reimbursed later.

First thing off the plane was Cafe Dumonde. Beignet's was good as anything I have ever had in my life, but fuckin pigeons were pissing me off. This white dude was feeding them bastards IN THE EATING AREA.

Then we went to Praline Connection, food was OFF THE CHAIN (I had the big platter and red beans and rice), but this sassy chick almost beat me down for pronouncing it "pray-leen" instead of "prah-leen". Funny stuff.

Walking around for a bit, we passed this jazz/blues spot and I was hooked. I forget the name of it but Ellis Marsalis is playing there tonight. I ditched my coworkers, they went to the airport, I stayed at this spot for hours, until at least 1am.

My flight leaves at 2, so I'm at the hotel now, trying to figure out breakfast (gonna do Lil Dizzy's on Max-Diggy's suggestion) and if I can eat lunch a couple of hours later without blowing up. Maybe Port of Call, or "Dooky" if there's no line?

Y'all made this trip hella bomb.
I'm coming back after New Year's. I have never met kinder Black folk in my life than the folks, young and old, I met in NO yesterday.

See... we aint all bad, dont let those mothafucks from Houston and Atlanta fool you.

Deanies is da shit man....get that seafood platter for 2 and you will eat for days unless you and 2 fukin linebackers go there....

Man... I never fall for that bullshit.
From the second I got off the plane, getting the *headnods* from the Brothas, to sitting in a restaurant and when the lady calls you "sweetie" you know she means it...
I imagine that this is what Atlanta was like before the late 90's explosion. This cat at the jazz spot last night told me "This is going to be the new Black Mecca"

I know I didn't get out to the real hoods, so I'm not seeing the whole thing, but I feel like with some direction, and some resources.... New Orleans is gonna be the spot.

I don't even think Chinese Kitchen is open anymore. But that is the truth. One second you will be in a nice neighborhood, turn the corner, you in the hood hood.
