Birth Control...the risks

My experience with the pill started when I was a teenager and my doctor prescribed them for my severe menstrual cramps.
If I knew that that shit was going to mess my body and my state of mind up like it did I would have dealt with the pain.

I highlighted the symptoms that applied to me and I will also add involuntary muscle movements and am pretty sure had my best friends' mother not stepped in and taken me to another doc I would have had a stroke. I had all the symptoms of that too. My mother was abroad at the time and well I kinda kept it from her until my friends mother made me tell her.

So I now no longer take pills.No tylenol or anything of the nature. Chemicals...:smh:

What are the side effects of taking the pill?

The most common complaints in pill users are nausea, "spotting" or breakthrough bleeding, weight gain, breast tenderness, mood alterations, and headaches. These are most severe when a woman first starts to take the pill, and often tend to disappear within 3 months.

If side effects continue or are problematic, trying another type of birth control can often alleviate some of the symptoms.

Progestin-only pills are much more likely than combination pills to lead to breakthrough bleeding, especially if one of the pills is missed.
What are the risks of taking the pill?

The greatest health risk from the pill is cardiovascular disease including especially blood clots in veins (deep vein thrombosis or DVT), heart attacks, and strokes.

These risks are especially raised in women who:

* are smokers
* are over the age of 35
* are obese
* have just had surgery
* have a family history of similar problems
* have high blood pressure
* have diabetes
* have raised cholesterol levels

Although these symptoms will often turn out to be incidental and not due to serious illness, symptoms that should warn a woman to seek prompt medical attention include:

* chest pain
* shortness of breath
* pain with breathing
* severe headache
* sudden onset of dizziness, weakness, or numbness
* sudden onset of blurring of vision or speech problems
* severe pain in a leg, especially in the calf
* severe abdominal pain

Depending on risk factors, women on the pill should have their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar regularly monitored.

Women who already have diabetes, high blood pressure, or raised cholesterol levels should thoroughly discuss the use of the pill with their doctor before starting on it.

Although it had been hoped that third generation birth control pills would lower these risks, studies have shown that these newer pills are no safer for cardiovascular health than the second generation of pills.

Women with certain kinds of migraines may be more at risk of strokes, so that all women with headaches should be counselled and carefully monitored.

The pill has also long been suspected as a potential stimulant of breast cancer, although studies have yielded conflicting results. The current consensus seems to be that using birth control pills leads to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer, especially in women who start on the pill before the age of 20, although for all other women the risk of breast cancer drops to that of a non-user 10 years after a woman discontinues using the pill.

Although long-term users of the pill may have a slightly higher rate of cervical cancer, the reason may have nothing to do with the pills' hormonal effects. Rather, women who use the pill are much less likely to use barrier methods of birth control and thus leave themselves more open to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that raise the risk of cervical cancer, that is, it may not be the pill that increases a pill user's risk of cervical cancer so much as she doesn't get the barrier protection non-pill users often do.

The pill slightly raises the risk of both certain benign and malignant liver tumours, although these are rare.

Some medications such as certain antibiotics and antiepileptics can interfere with the pill's effectiveness, as can herbal products such as St. John's wort, and any woman taking such products should consider using a barrier method of birth control as well

the only problem i had with the pills was being nauseaus when i took them. right now i'm on the shot but i'm bout to switch back over to the pill. the shot really makes you gain major weight and i dont like it. a friend told me that if i took the pill with applesauce it would keep me from :puke: lol.... i'm gonna try that

I tried several pills before I found one that works with my body. I tried Ortho Tri Cyclen, Ortho Lo, and finally settled on Yazmin. I have very, very irregular periods and Yazmin helps with that, and my period is only 3 days, 4 tops and I know EXACTLY when it comes.

I took Yazmin faithfully for about a year, the only side affect I had was feeling bloated the week before my period. I didn't take them for about a month or 2 this summer and I'm taking them again, and I dont really feel the initial start up side effects...

I'll tell you what does make me nauseous, taking my daily multi vitamin without eating first. It makes me light headed and queasy. It's horrible.

It is not fair to say that birth control is wrong and should not be used?

Why would you say that? Unless you have five kids by three different women and are married to none, decide when and where you want to be manogamous(sp) lol, for the time being and prohibit your baby's mamas from engaging in relationships with other men...you are not him; ie...

Be fruitful and multiply.

Children are a blessing from the Lord. The Lord is the creator and master of all life and so-called birth "control" is an attempt by man to circumvent God's will. Playing God is unwise. The purpose of sex is procreation. The pleasure that sexual intercourse provides is an additional blessing from God, intended to offer the possibility of new life while strengthening the bond of intimacy, respect, and love between husband and wife. Sexual pleasure even within marriage becomes unnatural, and even harmful to the spouses, when it is used in a way that deliberately excludes the basic purpose of sex, which is procreation. God’s gift of the sex act, along with its pleasure and intimacy, must not be abused by deliberately frustrating its natural end—- procreation.

i think these pills really fuck with the body and should not be used.
ive heard of one that is tryin to stop the period fully. Bullshit!

I thoroughly my packet that comes with my birth control, and I can't remember anything about alcohol. But it does mention smoking. And antibiotics. Antibiotics can lower the effectiveness of your pill.

I tried the I.U.D and it worked best for me. But I've heard some horror stories

...I can't be bothered with that clown anymore. :smh:

In any case, I don't mess with birth control pills, patches, etc. They ALL have adverse side effects, from hair loss to altering moods to strokes. There was an interesting documentary I saw a few years ago about birth control and how SO many women (guinea pigs) died because researchers were trying to get the proper dosages correct. If I can go through my notes and find the name, I'll see if You Tube has any clips.

Probably y a rising number of people gettin cancers.
At this point the full understanding of every function of every organ is not known. We have knowlege but all is not known about the body.Our body functions as a system, each part is needed or process is needed. All these chemicals are just fuckin it up. WOrkin on one thing yet u have about 20 side effects... just to 'cure' someting that a simple lifestyle would.

Lord only knows the other functions for the period.

I say it all the time. People have become so dependent on that ish. :smh: I went through the negative part of taking that stuff and it's never gonna happen again.

All true, child. Man thinks he is God and he can control nature. The period is holy and as essential to life as it is to this sentence. Those who seek purity and truth must avoid modern false technology.

Twisty girl dont you know it, speak the truth :yes:

like i said before the risks taken are incredible to women

i've never asked any partner i ever had to get on a pill or whatever which may change your body while a condom does a good enough job.

I think a lot of the problem is that some men do not or choose not to comprehend that these chemicals will completely alter the female body. It not only affects us physically but mentally. I would know since I've been through it.

Its good that you wouldn't expect a partner to take it just because.

I've been on the pill, the patch, and the ring. Birth control kept me childless and I appreciate it. It eased my cramps, killed the acne, and gave me a safety net so i never had to worry about any "mistakes". Meanwhile all my friends went around having abortions and using the morning after pills I was chill. Now they all have babies except for my friend who is celibate and in love only with God.

BUT....I gained HELLA weight, I always worry that I may be not be able to get pregnant for a while being that I was on BC for 6 years, and my breasts ballooned from a 36D to a ...DDD (not the worst of my problems lol)

Still I would not want to be a 21 yr old parent so I am greatly appreciative and take the weight gain happily.....Now if in a few yrs I can't have a baby then I'll get back to yall:angry:

Now that needs to go in a birth control benefits thread.

a lady friend of mine says she cant take birth control because it can give her a stroke.

Recently this past week, my cousin Nicole Dishuk (age 31...newly grad
student with a doctorant degree about to start her new career as a
Doctor...) was flown into a nearby hospital, (She lives in Penn.) because
she passed out.

They found a blood clot in her neck, and immediately took her by
helicopter to the ER to operate. by the time they removed the right half
of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain, the clot had spread to
her brain causing severe damge.

Since last Wednesday night, she was battling.. they induced her into a
coma to stop the blood flow, They operated 3 times..Finally, they said
there was nothing left that they could do.. they found multiple clots in
the left side of her brain.. the swelling wouldn't stop, and she was on
life support..She died at 4:30 yesterday. She leaves behind a husband, and
a 2 yr old Brandon and a 4yr old Justin.. The CAUSE of DEATH - they found
was a birth control she was taking that allows you to only have your
period 3 X's a year...

They said it interrupts life's menstrual cycle, and although
it is FDA approved... shouldn't be - So to the women in my address book- I
ask you to boycott this product & deal with you period once a month so you
can live the rest of the months that your life has in store for you.

Flash that was the situation that ish put me in. Men have no idea what women go through with that chemical stuff. I give thanks that I had family and friends that cared and knew enough to step in and help me.

Harlem I hope that you watch your diet etc because taking all that stuff is most unnatural and it will have effects dear.

Peace
