Do African Americans Discriminate Against Africans????

yeah, but I tend to see more Africans looking down on AAs, than AAs looking down on Africans. Honestly Ive never once had a conversation with a family member or other AA about Africans, West Indians etc..

Ive had plenty of conversations with Nigerians, Hatians, Trinis Jamaicans about AAs. We seem to be on their minds alot more than they are on ours.

Just my observation

Try dating one of them...you'll hear about it. you'll hear about how their mom/dad or whatever dont want any AAs in their home, or how this girl cant bring one of us home etc. One of my boys (from Nigeria) told me that his grandmother back home told him not to befriend any of us because we are dirty people?????

That lady did/does not know me. But we do all the generalizing???????

Im just sayin.....I got no beef wit anybody until they bring it to me. I dont give a shit where u from

This is exactly what I am referring to and the things I have heard them say about us. They even look at us like we are dirty...I'm talking about the women now....again the men try to get with you.

When you say "they" what specific African ethnic
group a you referring to?

this story doesn't correlate with what you're saying at all considering the boy never hated or disliked his teacher.....

No it doesn't, but my point is that the person who you were probably taught to mistrust, will do the most for you!;)

ACTUALLY it goes both ways.

So does discrimination between most any groups you care to invoke. This post is like asking "Do African Americans Discriminate European Americans????" The answer is of course, yes....but in doing so you are looking at the wrong side of the spectrum or in many cases a response element. I have been around and worked with Africans and Caribbean Immigrants and from my experience they are about the most unduly arrogant immigrants you can find (next to Indians, some Arabs and very few Asians). I don't know why but they seemed to be trained to be leery of AA's early on from family and friends. Plus it may be that the ones that do make it to "the land of oppotunity" are more educated and skilled and may already have a chip on their shoulder (possibly even to "lower echelon" blacks in Africa). They love to take that stereotype of AA's laziness and stupidity and run with it almost to the extent to prove to whites that they are a different breed.

I do agree with the earlier posts though about AA's having a systematic tendancy to dislike all people of color including themselves. Maintaining descension amongst the masses has been used for centuries by slaveowners and imperialists alike (it has just been more contained and complete on this side of the Atlantic). But again as Megatron pointed out, AA's are some of the -if not THE- most tolerant/inclusive folks on the planet...so IMHO the whole question is off based (not to mention that the question itself seems to lead to more stereotyping...go figure).

This is a ridiculous post!!
Some do and some don't and vice versa.
That's life. Ignorance exists any and everywhere and noone has the sole rights on it.
Japanese and Chinese are prejudiced against each other, white against black, tall against short, fat against thin, abled against disabled, clever against stupid........
Best spend more time lifting yourself from whatever paticular ignorance you dwell in than worrying about that shit!!!!

Regulus, you must be from H-Town, homie; I'll cosign your reply. Houston has the largest Nigerian community in the US, and for the most part, they carry themselves with a bit of a superiority complex. Young cats claiming that "original man" bullshit when they get around each other. They fuck with the general black population when the white folks start coming down on all their credit card scams and real estate fraud. If you know any, you know that they can't be trusted farther than you can throw them. I will give them shady muthafuckas one thing, though, they stick together so tight Moses couldn't part their asses.

Please don't stereotype an entire group of people unless you know what the fuck you're talking about
I've been around Nigerians my entire life and I've never heard the phrase "original man"
Just because a couple of them fit your stereotype, doesn't mean all of them do
Bullshit like this is why SOME Africans don't think black people in America are shit
Hard to blame them at times....

I am glad we are having this discussion. If you read all of the comments from beginning to end you can see one thing, we need atonement. Yesterday, when I was talking to my friend Esther from Nigeria we got into an argument. She called us AAs "slave babies". That hurt my feelings and eventually it became a emotionally charged interchange of more name calling and accusations. I began to accuse her ancestors of selling my ancestors. She called me a slave. I called her a slave. One I realized that I was speaking out of emotion I ended the conversation. When I saw her today, I did not speak because I still felt offended from what she had said yesterday. The bottom line is we need to have a thoughtful and respectful dialogue so that we can heal the wounds. Its rediculouse for me to say her ancestors sold my ancestors because we have the same ancestors. Its ignorant of her to redicule our experience in slavery because we are one. I wouldn't laugh at my brother if he was arrested by the cops and locked up for no reason. So we need to respectfully engage in a real conversation and both sides need to try to learn from each other. Stop saying mean things and let's try to eliminate the misconceptions that we have about one another. We AAs are shown a very one sided depiction of Africa by the American media and learn nothing about our homeland from the public education system that most of us rely on. And Africans coming here get alot of misinformation and broad generalizations about AAs when they arrive here. Bottom line is, we need each other and this divide weakens all of us.

From experience and from having a lot of friends from directly from African countries or with parents who emigrated it is typically the other way. I don't think it is with malicious intent, but parents want the best for their children. I have several friends whose parents told them not to interact with African Americans. It is because what they see on TV is a very poor representation of black people (they are ignorant, they don't care about education, they don't care about family, etc.). On my college campus Africans and African Americans were very much separated. In fact even my African friends who had "too many" African American friends were kept on the margins of the African community.

The issue is very interesting and complex.

I remember a song by Peter Tosh; " No matter where you come from, as long as you are a black man, you are an Africa".

Hating on each other as some have started on the thread is a big part of our problem. We do need to come together, show tolerance and learn to appreciate each other. I have seen many negatives and many positives; on this same issue. However, the difficult task I give myself is to treat each person with respect until otherwise and avoid generalizations; that is the easy way.

Peace and Love to all of you and remember; No matter where you come from as long as you are a black man you are an African!!

In some cases that's true. In others cases Africans are just as rude to African Americans as they are to them. I've worked with africans overseas in the contract game. Some seem to think they were better because they were (as they say) real Africans and knew their native tongues.

Africans and AA are different. As my man said previously, they got some sort of racsim against AA. Also, we tend to be on these other black ethnic group's minds for some reason. And they parents be talking shit about us. Fuck em. Africans calling AA dirty? Stay in Afica and die of famine, disease, civil war, and aids, if you got a problem with us. FUCK YOU.

I began noticing a difference bettween AA and Africans when I began deciphering cultural and personable behavior. Which was similar amongst many of them as I came around. They actually treated me different than they own, like an outsider. They sometimes act white. So, they are not the same as AA.

I could give a fuck about them. They did help sell us to the cracka regardless. These and other ethnic groups come here and talks shit about AA. But they benefit off of our struggle. They were too pussyfied to fight against their native government for a better way of life. But they have no problems coming here after we've shed blood.

I'll tell these fools in a minute, GO THE FUCK BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY IF YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH AFRICAN AMERICANS. Go back to your hut!!! WE GOT IT BAD ENOUGH BEING GENERALIZED BY WHITE SOCIETY. GO THE FUCK BACK.

I have quite a few African friends. Today I had a very interesting conversation with my friend Esther from Nigeria. She said that black Americans are often very rude to her and assume that she is not intelligent. Also she said that whites tend to want to understand them more, as opposed to black Americans who tend to ridicule them. Another friend of mine, Yarid from Ethiopia, said for the most part, Africans are isolated from blacks and that they were warned by their parents not to interact with the blacks here. This sentiment has been repeated time after time to me from several other African friends of mine. Is there any merit to this? If so, why are Africans and African-Americans so divided?

African-Americans discriminate against African-Americans! Lightskin vs. Darkskin for starters, so it's nothing new, just sad.

White people tend to want to understand her more huh? Well here's a newsflash:

I DON'T TRUST WHITE PEOPLE (not all, just most) They are some of the nosiest people on the planet. They use the "dumb blonde" approach to lure ya ass in, then when it comes down to crunch time, they turn their back like they never knew ya, unless you go completely out of your element like a Clarance Thomas, then ya might get a pass.

In general, i don't trust nobody, but this is the "white version" of it.

I ain't pro human because all humans ain't pro-black. This includes a whole host of slave minded Africans and AA. Members of both hating on each other usually do so out of their own inferiority complex as they fight for a position on the white man's dick. Continental African's hating on AA because they know an African language yet en mass worship some foreign slave religion/culture/god and some continue to use foreign languages as their national languages. I see I have to quote Talib Kwali again when he said some blacks are "like slaves on a ship talking about who got the flyest chain." Pan-Africanist usually don't have this problem. Thus, I say to all those not truly down with the red, black, and green, "FUCK ALL Y'ALL". May the ghost of Marcus Mosiah Garvey bless these pan-African words and kill all those that disagree.

I thinks people of color as a whole have a lot of self-hatred issues.

It's all over the world.

And white people just laugh at us.

So whites don't have a lot of self-hate issues????

:smh::smh::smh:

What makes ours bad and theirs good?

:confused::confused::confused:

U TALKIN BOUT U SHED BLOOD LIKE U WAS THERE GOIN THRU ACTUAL SLAVERY, STFU
IT A FACT THAT SOME OF THE SLAVES WEN BAK TO WEST AFRICA
AFTER SLAVERY TO START OVER...DONT TALK ABOUT WE SHED BLOOD, BITCH....WHO AINT SHED BLOOD?
AND DAWG WE AFRICAN COME HERE IN HOPE TO GET FILTHY RICH AND GO BAK TO OUR COUNTRY U KNOW......HOME....

It always seems to me that these foreign blacks have more of a problem or issue with AA. They talk about us more. AA don't seem to be too concerned about foreign blacks or AA just see them as black. But there's more than meets the eye here.

Foreign blacks have a more of a discrimination pattern and motive when it comes to AA.

AA are the most religious and spiritual people in the country.

That doesn't take much in the U.S. However, this is still not true...if we are saying AA on average. AA are just as immoral, lazy and fucked up as any other group here, Fam. Our shit stinks too.

I think Megatron X and dagoon121 are the same person cos they sound they same yet from different extremes. Ya'll got a lot more in common than your dark skin (thats if ya'll even black)

Its all about culture fellas, the african cultures are traditional and they believe deep down that we have no culture, was talkin to my nigierian friend bout the same shit the other day.

sadly he was explaining this while we were in his car bumpin little brother (our culture hiphop) damn shame he said if i brought a yankie girl home my mom would trip cause she may have no manners while smellin like ten gorillaz an shit dats my fam but he be on some other shit

Im half yardie, yankie an columbian so i got a mutt thing goin they all act like that even the latin folks but here they want to be us, the first thing some african people do when they get here is try to lose there accent they just as lost as some of us are all in all we all got culture but to dumb are blind to see or respect it :yes:

People are afraid of things they don't understand. Me being Liberian I know this. People in general are afraid of the unknown. African Americans don't understand African culture. Just as Nigerians don't understand Liberian culture and vise versa. If both sides would be open to learning new customs, traditions, and beliefs there would be less anger and hatred. There was a poster earlier talking about a certain Nigerian on the board, saying how all he eats is goat. This is what i'm talking about. I hear Liberians saying this all the time about Nigerians. Nigerians may think Liberians think we are all Americans and not African.

Africans hang out with other Africans because we can relate. Our talk, our food, it is all very similar to African American foods, where do you think your recipes came from?

You just gotta have an open mind and don't judge all of us based on a few. Just like we don't want crackas judging all of us based on TI's stupid choices.

Later. We are all from Africa. We are all African.

You're damn right and it's exactly the same between people of different colors, religions, countries or ethnies...

I hate to bring this up but when I was in school there were some Nigerians there. Ni**as would not stop clownin them...skin tone, big lips, look how black they are. look at her/his clothes. AA women were the most aggressive at doing this. The AA men were running a close second though. These people were already scared about being here and AA made it a living hell for them. The next year the original ones mostly did not come back, the next batch stuck to them selves and only dealt with very few AA, guess what Ni**as now was dogging them saying that they were stuck up and thought they were better than us. So basically they were in a loose loose situation. Now fast forward to now, the Africans that I know are cool but they only deal with you if they think you are cool/progressive. I was raised to respect all men and their differences and I do. Its a shame if you titled this thread light skin versus dark skin blacks you would get the same results. Being ignorant and racist will always foster hate and self hate.

Bitch, my people paved the way for your no soap and no deodorant wearing ass. I am not talking only about slavery per se, but the Civil Rights Bill being passed. You can finally come here and take a daily bath instead of a yearly one. You can eat with a fork instead of your dirty feat.

I am down with deporting immigrants. You should not come here in the first place. Build up your own rat hole continent instead of juicing America. From what I see Africans here don't go back to live in that shit hole. I was talking to an African one day and he says he don;t like America. He bought a house here though. I asked him why he's living here and couldn;t answer the question.

But you Africans better tone down on that "I have a problem with AA" because ya'll be next in line with the Mexicans for deportation. Or you may get looked at no different that white folks.

Man, you sound so stupid. STFU. For your info my people are from the South and I was raised in the hood in Boston. So, don;t go there.

Couldnt have said it any better

The only thing I want is a united Africa, a borderless one. One where our people could come home to and realize that our home needs to be protected from outside influence, that we as a people are strong and could do it for ourselves...

but its not going to happen on my or my childrens watch, and it would continue to get worse before it gets better.

There is enough anger, hate, and ignorance to go around, but it is harder on us as a people if we keep it amongst ourselves over trivial land pursuits and cultures.

I've witnessed this countless times
Some blacks in this country stay clowning and insulting Africans here
And then they wonder why SOME of them talk negatively about them

Hey DaGoon21,

You have a right to your opinion however when you are done making your money, take the time to ask yourself if the white man as you so poiantly put it takes the time to differintiate between African American and African. Lastly your comment on slavery and how it was a good thing is disturbing at the very least...as it affected not only black America but the Caribbean, South Amercia and Africa to this very day. Since you are still relatively new to this country maybe a refresher course in Black history might change you perspective. Start with the Willie Lynch papers...maybe take a look at the reconstruction period in this country post civil war. Maybe then you will understand why so many people have taken issue with your original post. It's time to stop pointing the finger at one another and become solution oriented. Time is running out people. Rawanda, Dafur, Katrina and all of the atrocities done to our people must be addressed collectively. These are not new events..just events that have been revisited time and time again. (Tuskgeegee experiment, hurricane of 1920 in New Orleans and all of the tribal warefare caused by colonial interferences in Africa). No need to cuss ya out....just do your history.
