Four former presidents will stand together at Ground Zero for the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

The sitting president will be 200 miles away.

Joe Biden, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are all expected in Lower Manhattan on Thursday as families once again read the names of those killed on September 11, 2001.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will be there. Vice President JD Vance will be there, representing the administration.

President Donald Trump won't.

Trump is heading instead to the Pentagon, where American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building 25 years ago.

But why he's skipping New York has become a story of its own.

The New York Times reported that one factor was Trump's desire to deliver remarks at Ground Zero.

Politicians haven't been allowed to speak at the ceremony since 2012, helping keep the focus on the victims and their families.

Trump has strongly denied that account, calling the reporting “corrupt” and threatening to include it in his lawsuit against the newspaper.

This year's ceremony will also include something new: a seventh moment of silence honoring those who have died from 9/11-related illnesses.

The other moments will mark the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the collapse of both towers, and the crash of United Flight 93.

On a day built around remembering something bigger than any one person, four former presidents have chosen to gather at Ground Zero.

The current president has chosen the Pentagon.

Is Trump's absence from Ground Zero a snub — or is commemorating 9/11 at the Pentagon just as appropriate?
