Alice
2022

7.5/10

This film started streaming mid-2022. Every streaming platform it came on, I was ready to watch it. And for whatever reason I just never got around to watching it cuz I was bogged down trying to catch up on other content. The movie just recently got uploaded on tubi and Netflix. I decided to watch it on Netflix quickly before it got pulled being Netflix is commercial free. I watched it last night at home.

Being I’m probably the last person on the forum to see it, no need to go into details.

I went into only knowing what was in the trailer. I was expecting the story to go a certain way, but it brought on a good twist. Evidence of the twist was presented earlier, I somewhat caught on but wasn’t sure until it was finally revealed.

There have been conspiracy theories since the 1950s that what the twist in the film is actually fact. It never has been proven. The film does say it was based on actual events, so I’m gonna need to look into that later.

When the main character figures out what is going on, the film proceeds quickly from there presenting the story. Which makes it feel rushed. The premise of this story definitely would have worked better as a 10 part limited series allowing it too go more in-depth on a number of topics that was presented in the film. Especially with the Old Man who made contact with the Black Man who gave him something. (I don’t wanna spoil it for those who have not seen the film).

It’s a decent film. It gives props to the Black Power Movement.

Synopsis

Alice (2022) is a thriller drama starring Keke Palmer as an enslaved woman on a Georgia plantation who escapes. She must then confront the lies that kept her captive and seek revenge on her enslaver.

Trap House
2025

5.5/10

I watched this last night at home. It got uploaded recently on Netflix and is ranking high currently.

I read the brief info and watched the trailer. It looked interesting…and predictable, but I watched it anyway.

The film didn’t go how I expected and the plot did get my attention with his events played. It kept my eyes glued to the screen from start to finish.

Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul) co-stars and plays a harder version of his character ‘Lalo’ from that series. Suspense kicks in early in the film when some of the characters start getting stupid, which is the main plot of the film without spoiling it.

Overall, it’s an entertaining film. You have to watch with disbelief with kids robbing a cartel, but other than it’s a good film. It left off for a potential sequel.

Synopsis

Trap House (2025) is a Netflix action-thriller about a DEA agent whose teenage son and his friends use their parents' intel to rob a drug cartel, leading to a cat-and-mouse game between the families

Tony Dalton was great as "Lalo" on Better Call Saul. Definitely a scene stealer in that series.

I enjoyed Bobby Cannavale in the series Bupkis in a smaller role. He was especially good in episode 2, which was my fave from the season.

Shin Godzilla
2016

7.5/10

This film came up on my Google recommendations late last year. I saw it was on HBO MAX, so I saved it in My Stuff. I watched it this afternoon at home.

The movie gives a different perspective on the Godzilla genre from how other traditional Godzilla films are presented. Godzilla is portrayed in his classic mode of just being a creature of absolute disaster.

The primary plot is not Godzilla, the film mainly focuses on the Japanese Government’s response to him. It starts out immediately in the opening scene of Godzilla’s arrival in Japan.

The first 15 minutes is done with tongue-in-cheek humor introducing the main characters. The film has an extremely large cast. Don’t try to read the screen graphics describing who is who and their position in the Government, it’s almost impossible to keep track which is the joke, along with how many departments and offices there are in the Japanese government. The joke also is watching everyone who supposed to be on top of stuff, completely unaware of what they should do. How the Japanese government responds in this film is most likely how any government will respond in a situation like this.

Godzilla is introduced fully around the 15 minute mark. His appearance will throw you off. Just remember this is Godzilla’s first appearance in Japan, how he looks is explained later without spoiling it. Around the 1:00 hour mark, Godzilla’s full power is displayed. If you were impressed with how he was shown displaying his powers in ‘Godzilla: Minus One’, this film steps it up.

The U.S. Government is involved in the background. The subject of the U.S. dropping a Thermonuclear bomb on Japan is discussed in regards that it will be the 3rd nuclear bomb dropped on Japan. Other countries are involved with what is going on.

HBO MAX has the film in Japanese with subtitles. They provide the option for English dubbing for Japanese. Other countries shown speak in the native tongue without dubbing, you will need to turn subtitles on for their scenes.

Overall, it’s an entertaining film. It’s a combination of ‘Dr. StrangeLove’ and ‘Cloverfield’

Synopsis

It focuses on a new, terrifying version of Godzilla that evolves as it attacks Japan, and it's known for its blend of political satire, bureaucratic drama, and intense action, detailing the human response to the disaster. The film is praised for its unique take on the monster, its focus on the government's chaotic response, and its stunning visual effects, making it a significant entry in the Godzilla series.

He was honestly the only thing I care for in that entire movie. It's crazy how the same director both saved the Thor franchise with Ragnarok & drove it into the ground with Love & Thunder.

Bale absolutely killed that role. It's just a shame that he only had like 4 or 5 scenes in the whole movie. Why spend time developing a interesting villain when you can do your 16th goats screaming joke or add a random Old Spice commercial in the middle of a character dying of cancer scene.

If they make another standalone Thor movie, they really should move on to a different director.

Good point. One was definitely much better received than the other, and Bale was certainly underutilized. Like you said - select a different director the next time around, if it happens.

He's really had an interesting career.

I'll always be thankful he helped Sterlin Harjo with the FX platform to get Reservation Dogs going.

It's good - saw it on the big screen with free advanced screening tix back in the day. Same for Inside Man. Took my friend to 25th Hour, and pops to Inside Man.

The Bride

PRAISE: Director and writer Maggie Gyllenhaal's take on The Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein's Creation/monster goes down some interesting paths with dark humor and salty dialogue woven in. I thought the actors in the film who go all in did a very good job including Jessie Buckley as The Bride / Ida / Mary Shelley, resembling a Rick Geary drawing especially around the eyes ,Christian Bale as Frank who looks a bit like Hanna-Barberas Frankenstein Jr, Jake Gyllenhaal as Ronnie Reed,Annette Bening as Dr. Euphronious,Penelope Cruz as Myrna and Peter Sarsgaard as Jake Wiles. The movie is very stylish and then some and I enjoyed the on the nose nods to other Frankenstein movies. The Brides I'm a feminist and I'm not going to take it anymore stance was believable when more was revealed about her background. I enjoyed the banter between the various characters. Gyllenhaal adds some nice touches to the Frankenstein monster/creation that i never really thought of over years of watching movies about the character.

PROBLEMS: Some parts of the movie felt incoherent. How did the world view the two main characters? At times accepted or just plain old feared? Because the movie plays with both but its unclear if some of their interactions are just dreams or real. The movie attempts to be so many things Bonnie and Clyde, Joker and Sweeney Todd but it wasn't enough to really involve me all the way to the end.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7

Thanks for the review.

Wish that Anton Yelchin was still alive. Really good young actor, and what a way to go in that freak accident years back.

After Yelchin failed to arrive at a rehearsal on June 18, 2016, he was found by friends at around 1:10 a.m. on June 19, 2016,[36] pinned between his Jeep Grand Cherokee and a brick pillar gate post outside his house in Studio City, Los Angeles, dead from a freak accident.[37][38] As Yelchin got out of his car and went to check his locked gate for mail, the vehicle apparently rolled back down his driveway, which was on a steep incline, and trapped him against the pillar and a security fence. Yelchin was pronounced dead at the scene at the age of 27;[39] the Los Angeles County Coroner's office identified the cause of death as "blunt traumatic asphyxia" and stated that there were "no obvious suspicious circumstances involved".[40][41]

War Machine
2026

6.5/10

I watched this flick tonight at home on Netflix.

I went into not expecting much, but it actually played out pretty well.

The first 30 minutes is main character introduction/development. After that it slowly moves into SHTF stage.

The War Machine looks pretty decent. It looks like a ‘Decepticon’. It’s pretty ruthless and heavily armed. It’s dedicated in how it operates similar to that Robot Dog Drone in ‘Black Mirror’.

VFX/SFX looks good. Suspense is done welll and has good intensity. The film has a slight similarity to the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Predator’.

The film somewhat leaves off for a sequel, but I doubt it will happen with how it ends.

Overall, it’s an entertaining film, the premise is nothing new being it’s an alien invasion film, but it’s done well.

Synopsis

Alan Ritchson as a combat engineer whose final Army Ranger training exercise becomes a fight for survival against a giant, otherworldly robotic enemy.
