Jimmy Kimmel Live! Taken Off Air After Charlie Kirk Remarks

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been suspended indefinitely by ABC over its titular host's comments about Charlie Kirk.

A network spokesperson said Wednesday that his late-night talk show will be "pre-empted indefinitely."

"Mr. Kimmel's comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located," said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar's broadcasting division.

"Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue."

Nexstar Says It Will Drop Jimmy Kimmel’s Show From Its ABC Stations “For The Foreseeable Future” Following Charlie Kirk Comments

Nexstar says that it will pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel’s show from its ABC stations “for the foreseeable future” following his remarks about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

The company said, “Nexstar’s owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight’s show. Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”

Kimmel said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, “We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.”

On Tuesday, authorities charged Tyler Robinson, 22, in Kirk’s killing, along with a series of other charges. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray said that Robinson’s mother said her son “had become more political and had started to lean more to the left, becoming more pro-gay and trans rights oriented.” Gray said that when Robinson’s father asked his son why he did it, Robinson “explained that there was too much evil, and the guy, referring to Charlie Kirk, spreads too much hate.”

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at North Javits in New York City, an incredible roster of all-star talent will tout their connections to storytelling, Disney, and each other while showcasing their latest projects for the upcoming year.

ABC on Wednesday night said it was pulling the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” late-night show off the air “indefinitely” after controversial comments by its host about the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Jimmy Kimmel, during his opening monologue for Monday night’s show, had suggested that Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Kirk, was aligned with President Donald Trump’s MAGA — Make America Great Again — movement.

“The MAGA Gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

“In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving,” he added.

″ ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ will be pre-empted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesman told NBC News on Wednedsday.

ABC is a subsidiary of Disney.

ABC’s announcement came shortly after Nexstar Media Group said its company-owned and “partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight’s show.”

“Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” Nextstar said.

“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue,” Alford said.

Disney to pull Jimmy Kimmel's show after kirk remarks

Disney said it is pulling ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show in the wake of remarks he made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will be preempted indefinitely,” an ABC spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The move comes after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel. Several owners of ABC TV stations, including large broadcaster Nexstar Media Group, told the network they were dropping the show.

In his Monday night broadcast, Kimmel—a critic of President Trump—said, “the Maga Gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving,” he said.

Kimmel also said Vice President JD Vance and others in “MAGA-land” were trying to capitalize on Kirk’s death.

Nexstar, which owns and operates 32 ABC affiliates in large and mid-sized markets, said Kimmel’s remarks about Kirk’s death and his followers were beyond the pale.

“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located,” said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division.
