I was responding to the post that said the only reason she's so popular is because she's white, I pointed out that there were white players in the league before her that didn't move the needle on the popularity of the WNBA, so her being white is not the answer. You then stated that in addition to her whiteness, she was also hyped out of college, in addition, she also shoots long 3's. So we both agree that her being white, isn't the only reason she's popular.

This point is a good one to get back on track. The bigger narrative is that no one cares about Women’s basketball and feel it’s an inferior product when compared to the men’s game, despite having good players in the league. The x-factor is the hype; CC got a buzz in Iowa, had a solid collegiate career that translated to the pro level.
Now all the aforementioned players did well in college and their game came with them, but the hype didn’t follow. No one cared to follow their careers post college, but that isn’t the case with Clark. The hype train followed and she did not decline.
In closing, the “Great White Hope” thing is not applicable because it hasn’t only been black athletes dominating. There’s been a good mixture of black & white throughout the leagues history, but it all goes back to interest. CC made people care again and she’s no bum. Perfect vehicle for anyone to hitch a trailer to, in this case whites as the OP mentioned.
