Explainer: How Iran outsmarted Israel and downed F-35 fighter jets for the first time

The Iranian armed forces have reportedly shot down at least three Israeli F-35 fighter jets, marking the first time a fifth-generation stealth aircraft has been successfully downed.

On Saturday afternoon, the Iranian Army’s Public Relations Office announced that Iranian air defenses had taken down a third Israeli F-35 stealth jet, following the destruction of two other jets the previous night.

This makes Iran the first country in the world to shoot down a fifth-generation stealth fighter, 14 years after it famously downed an American RQ-170 Sentinel reconnaissance drone.

The Israeli F-35s were intercepted by Iran’s Bavar-373, a long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

The Bavar-373 is capable of engaging targets at considerable distances, including advanced stealth fighters like the F-35 and F-22—the latter operated exclusively by the United States.

The F-35 fighters represent the most advanced aircraft in the Israeli Air Force, outclassing older, non-stealth F-15 and F-16 jets by a full generation. These jets were acquired from the United States, with the F-35 Lightning II manufactured by Lockheed Martin.

Israel’s customized variant, the F-35I, is engineered for radar evasion, enabling deep penetration missions with a reduced risk of detection or interception.

Despite its stealth capabilities, newer air defense systems developed by several countries, including Iran, have demonstrated the ability to detect and shoot down these aircraft.

By downing three enemy stealth fighters, Iranian air defenses have shattered the long-standing myth of Israeli “air superiority” cultivated over two decades.

The fact that these aircraft were destroyed within 48 hours, while their crews were captured, killed, or remain missing, demonstrates a high level of tactical sophistication in the command and control of Iranian armed forces.

Notably, Israeli aircraft operated with relative impunity on the first night, underscoring the strategic tactics employed by Iran to plan and execute the successful shootdowns later.

Falling for the bait

The Israeli F-35s were destroyed in Iranian airspace on the second day of Israeli aggression on Iran, after the regime commanders believed they had severely damaged Iranian air defenses on the first day, Friday.

While the number and usual deployment of Iranian radar batteries can be estimated from open-source and intelligence data, distinguishing real air defenses from decoys remains challenging. These decoys are intended to mislead anti-radiation missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.

During the attacks, Israeli regime forces primarily used drones equipped with electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) sensors to strike radar installations. However, once these drones detonate, their sensors are destroyed, leaving operators uncertain whether they eliminated real radar systems or decoys.

Reconnaissance drones and satellites offer insufficient resolution for precise damage assessment. The only reliable verification would require agents on the ground deep inside Iran—a high-risk and unlikely scenario.

Iran has long been known to employ sophisticated military decoys, including radar batteries. These decoys are far more advanced than simple wooden mock-ups; some emit false radar signals to mimic real activity and can cost upwards of $10,000 each.

On the first night of the Israeli regime’s attacks on mostly civilian areas in Tehran, Iran combined decoys with strategic deception by withdrawing many real radar batteries from service and hiding them, while exposing only mock-ups.

Israeli drones targeted these apparent radar sites, believing they had crippled Iranian defenses and gained air superiority.

This miscalculation proved costly. On subsequent attacks, Israeli fighter jets ventured deeper into Iranian airspace, unaware that functional radar systems had been reactivated. Iranian air defenses surprised the Israeli Air Force by engaging and shooting down several advanced stealth fighters.

Had Iranian forces attempted to down jets on the first night without this element of surprise, their success would have been doubtful. Additionally, any wreckage from early shootdowns would likely have fallen into neighboring Iraq, offering Iran little opportunity for technological study.

Denial and concealment

Predictably, the Israeli regime has denied it to maintain morale among its already embattled forces and protect the false reputation of its supposedly “invincible” air power.

Acknowledging losses would also strain relations with the United States, which fears advanced Israeli F-35 technology falling into the hands of Iran, or potentially Russia or China.

The US restricts F-35 sales to a select group of trusted allies, including Israel, under strict conditions (Turkey, for example, has been excluded). The F-22 Raptor, the second American stealth fighter, is not exported to any allies due to its highly sensitive technology.

Loss of these fighters would be a major blow to American military prestige, as demonstrated by the fallout from Iran’s downing of the RQ-170 Sentinel, which reportedly informed Iranian drone and subsystem development.

Despite numerous unofficial photos of wreckage circulating online, the Iranian armed forces have yet to release official images of the downed F-35s.

This restraint likely aims to conceal the extent of recovered technology and prevent adversaries from accurately assessing which advanced systems Iran and its allies may soon exploit.

IRGC says it struck Israeli fighter jet fuel production and energy supply sites with missiles, drones

Saturday, 14 June 2025 10:57 PM [ Last Update: Saturday, 14 June 2025 11:27 PM ]
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says it has struck the Israeli regime’s fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply lines with a massive barrage of missiles and drones.

Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini, the spokesperson for the IRGC, in a televised statement said as part of the ongoing offensive-combined operations under 'True Promise III' in response to new aggression by the Zionist regime, fuel production facilities for fighter jets and the regime’s energy supply centers were targeted with a large number of drones and missiles.

He further said the offensive operations of the Iranian armed forces will continue with “even greater force and scale” if the acts of aggression persist.

The IRGC spokesperson also announced that the IRGC aerospace defense system, operating under the unified command network and the joint air defense headquarters of the country, had “successfully intercepted and destroyed” three Israeli cruise missiles, ten drones, and dozens of hostile mini-drones in the affected regions."

On Saturday night, the IRGC launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks against the Zionist entity, following the initial phase of the retaliatory operation “True Promise III” that began on Friday.

The latest stage of this large-scale military operation commenced around 11:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, with videos circulating on social media showing missiles hitting their targets.

This unprecedented retaliation is being conducted under the codename “Ya Ali ibn Abi Talib,” coinciding with the sacred occasion of Eid al-Ghadir that was observed on Saturday.

The main focus of this new round of ‘Operation True Promise III’ is the occupied port city of Haifa and its surroundings, which is home to several critical military and industrial facilities of the regime.

The strikes, according to Israeli media reports, targeted a series of strategic Israeli military and industrial sites, including oil refineries and electricity grids.

Images showed a massive blaze at the Haifa oil refinery, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky, with preliminary reports suggesting that the ensuing blaze is emitting toxic chemicals into the air.

Some regional media reports described Saturday night's attack by the IRGC as the "largest missile attack" ever carried out by the Iranian armed forces against the occupied territories.

The Weizmann Institute of Science; Israel’s leading research institution, was struck directly during Iran’s overnight missile and drone barrage on central Israel. According to a report by The New York Times, at least one laboratory building caught fire, and reports are now emerging of people trapped inside. Emergency services are on-site and working to rescue those inside under hazardous conditions.

The strike on the Weizmann Institute marks a symbolic and strategic blow, as the institution is considered the crown jewel of Israeli civilian scientific research.

IAEA Confirms Damage to Nuclear Infrastructure

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that four critical structures at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear facility were damaged in the strike, including a uranium enrichment facility and a fuel plate production plant. However, as with previous incidents in Natanz, the IAEA reports no increase in radiation levels outside the site

Mossad’s Shadow War: More Details About Covert Drone Strikes That Crippl

Inside Mossad’s daring covert drone operation crippling Iran’s air defenses from within, a critical move underpinning Israel’s aerial strikes and reshaping the regional conflict’s dynamics.

As Israel’s F-35 jets struck Iran’s nuclear and military sites on June 13th, a clandestine Mossad operation was already underway inside Iran, deploying smuggled drone parts to disable air defenses and missile launchers, according to sources familiar with the mission. The operation, detailed in a Wall Street Journal report, sheds light on why Iran’s response to Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion” has been less severe than anticipated.

For months, Israel’s spy agency, Mossad, smuggled components for hundreds of explosive-laden quadcopter drones into Iran via suitcases, trucks, and shipping containers. Small teams, equipped with these drones and munitions for unmanned platforms, positioned themselves near Iran’s air-defense systems and missile sites.

When Israel’s attack began, these teams struck, neutralizing air defenses and targeting missile launchers as they emerged from shelters, one source said. Dozens of missiles and their transport trucks, a critical bottleneck for Iran, were destroyed before launch, disrupting Iran’s ability to mount a robust counterattack.

Iran fired approximately 200 missiles at Israel in four salvos between Friday and Saturday, killing at least 13 people, including three minors, and injuring over 385, mostly lightly, according to Israel’s Ministry of Health. Damage was reported in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, and Bat Yam. Sima Shine, a former Mossad officer and head of the Iran program at Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies, noted that Israel expected a fiercer response. “We expected much more,” she said, cautioning that Iran’s vast missile reserves could fuel escalated attacks in the coming days.

The Mossad operation gave Israel’s air force critical aerial dominance. Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin confirmed that 70 fighter jets operated over Tehran for more than two hours on Saturday, striking targets at an unprecedented depth in Iran. “We created aerial freedom of action,” Defrin said. The strikes, which killed senior Iranian officials, including IRGC Commander Gen Hossein Salami and Chief of Staff Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri, also targeted the South Pars gas field and Shahran oil depot, killing at least 78, including 29 children, per Iranian reports.

Mossad’s tactics mirror recent Ukrainian operations, where drones smuggled into Russia targeted warplanes. These low-cost, off-the-shelf drones highlight a growing challenge for governments defending against agile, unconventional threats. Iran’s intelligence services, via outlets like Tasnim, issued advisories warning of Israeli drones launched from pickups and cargo trucks, reflecting heightened paranoia about infiltration.

This operation builds on Mossad’s history of audacious covert actions in Iran, including the 2022 drone attack on a Kermanshah drone-production site and the 2023 strike on an Isfahan ammunition factory. Last summer, Mossad allegedly assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a Tehran guesthouse, underscoring its deep infiltration capabilities. For the current campaign, preparations began years ago, with Mossad training team leaders in third countries to assemble and deploy the smuggled drones. The operation’s public disclosure, Shine noted, sows fear among Iran’s leadership, amplifying its psychological impact. “No one in Iran’s high echelons can feel safe,” she said.

Iran has vowed to intensify attacks if Israel persists, with threats to target U.S., UK, and French bases if they intervene. The Revolutionary Guards warned of “more ferocious” operations, and Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz could spike oil prices past $120 per barrel, risking a global recession. Meanwhile, Israel’s leadership, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, signaled a sustained campaign to dismantle Iran’s nuclear, missile, and air-defense capabilities, with Katz urging forces to “peel away the snake’s skin piece by piece.”

As the conflict escalates, Israel faces domestic challenges. In Eilat, residents avoid poorly maintained shelters, hiding instead in bathrooms, reflecting strained civilian infrastructure. President Isaac Herzog, visiting Bat Yam, called for calm, stating, “Nothing will deter us. The day after will be much brighter.” With both sides poised for further action, the region teeters on the edge of broader conflict.

Iran’s Operation True Promise III ‘source of pride’ for Muslims: Ex-Pakistani defense secretary

Sunday, 15 June 2025 10:01 AM [ Last Update: Sunday, 15 June 2025 10:01 AM ]

Pakistan’s former defense secretary has commended the retaliatory Operation True Promise III against the Israeli-occupied territories as a “source of pride” for the regional countries and the Muslim world.

Naeem Khalid Lodhi said in an interview with Pakistan’s Bol News network on Saturday that the Israeli regime was taken aback by the daring Iranian strikes.

The military operation brought about derangement and confusion for the illegal entity and its sympathizers, he said.

“What the Iranians did to Israel was unpredictable for the regime itself and its supporters, including the United States,” Lodhi said.

Expressing concern over the escalation of tensions in the region and condemnation of Israel’s aggressive approach towards Iran, the Pakistani official said, “The Israelis thought that after their attacks, Iran would need time to assess, but the Iranian Armed Forces launched a surprise operation against Israel and that was truly astonishing.”

Lodhi further underlined that, “There is no doubt that the Zionists are not alone in this war, and at the forefront, the United States supports Israel. However, Westerners are unaware of Iran’s history and civilization. Iran and its people have overcome unprecedented crises throughout history but have never surrendered.”

Pakistan’s former defense secretary also warned against the Israeli plots to further expand the ongoing war, similar to false flag operations in the region, saying, “Unlike Israel, Iran is responding to the Israeli onslaught in a very calculated manner.”

In the early hours of Friday, Israel launched deadly terrorist attacks on various civilian areas and residential neighborhoods in the capital Tehran, and some other major cities

US complicit in Israeli attacks, must be held accountable: Araghchi

Sunday, 15 June 2025 10:34 AM [ Last Update: Sunday, 15 June 2025 10:34 AM ]

The Iranian foreign minister says the United States must accept its responsibility for Israel’s deadly aggression against the country as multiple evidence shows American forces helped the regime wage its terrorist assault.

“We have solid evidence indicating that American forces and bases in the region have supported the attacks by the Israeli regime's military forces,” Abbas Araghchi told foreign envoys in Tehran on Sunday.

He also referred to remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said the Israeli strikes were not possible without American equipment and that more raids were on the agenda.

“Therefore, in our view, the US is a partner in these attacks and it must accept its responsibility. Of course, we have focused on targets inside the Zionist regime in response to the attacks,” Araghchi added.

The Israeli aggression against Iran could not have occurred without the agreement and support of the United States, he said.

Meanwhile, the top Iranian diplomat said that Israel had "crossed a new red line" in international law by targeting Iran's nuclear facilities.

Unfortunately, he noted, the serious Israeli violation was met with “indifference” at the United Nations Security Council.

Araghchi further emphasized that Iran’s response to Israeli attacks was based on the principle of self-defense in international relations and that every country has the legitimate right to defend itself against aggression.

He also said that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors will on Monday hold an emergency meeting on the Israeli attack on the Natanz nuclear site, expressing hope that it will condemn the raid as a flagrant violation of international law.

Additionally, the foreign minister stressed that Iran does not want the war with Israel to expand to other countries or the region “unless it’s imposed on us.”

“Basically, we did not initiate this war and we were pursuing diplomacy regarding our nuclear program, but this aggression was imposed on us. We are defending ourselves and this defense is completely legitimate,” he said. “Therefore, if the aggression stops, our reactions will naturally stop as well,” he said.

Also in his remarks, Araghchi highlighted Iran-US indirect nuclear talks and Israel’s disruption of the diplomatic process.

“It is absolutely clear that the Israeli regime does not want any agreement on the nuclear issue… The aggression against Iran amid nuclear talks demonstrates that the Israeli regime is opposed to any form of negotiation,” he pointed out.

The US government should condemn Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites if Washington wants to prove its goodwill and distance itself from the conflict, he concluded.

They did the exact same thing with the Hezbollah as soon as their air defense system was overwhelmed they called western powers and asked them to impose a ceasefire given Lebanon’s economy state the Hezbollah complied !

Israel ! the only country in the entire world where army generals are given personal phone numbers of western leaders in order to reach a ceasefire if they’re outflanked on the battlefield !

Edit: Israelis are lucky Iran’s IRCG are not into Adidas sportswear !
