Sinners

PRAISE: Writer/director Ryan Coogler has so much to say in his new film Sinners it's almost an overwhelming experience. The story about 2 brothers trying to leave their troubled lives behind, they return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. I liked how Coogler slowly but surely added layers and history to the characters in the film. Michael B Jordan is definitely the standout in a duel role but the cast is so outstanding that includes Cast: Li Jun Li, Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson Miller, Jayme Lawson, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Yao. There are some extremely effective moments between the characters filled with stories of regret, loss and love. The sins the characters carry with them, those that try to cover for the sins committed with spirituality either from back in the day or the present featured in the film. A great job is done with the horrific imagery that includes fade away shots and gore. Coogler places legendary vampire lore in all the right places. I think the last time I tapped my foot to the music and was equally pushed to the edge of my seat during a scene was 1998's Blade. There are nice nods and tributes to various cultures through music and dance. The salty dialogue and raw emotion blend well together and is lifted by the reliable and then some cast. I enjoyed both after credits scenes but so many people left before the second scene and i started thinking it should have been placed right at the films final scene.

PROBLEMS: I thought some moments were overly convenient and are used just to get an emotional feeling from the audience. I wish the opening foundation scene of the film had been different. I have to start taking my own advice and stop watching the trailers for movies because the trailer for this film gave far to much away.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Matt is joined by Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw and Franklin Leonard, a film executive and founder of the Black List, to discuss the weekend box office performance of Sinners, the road it has to travel to become profitable, and the revolving conversation around the special deal that director Ryan Coogler negotiated with Warner Bros. to make it. They also debate why the international numbers for Sinners weren’t as strong, whether race has anything to do with the type of media coverage the film has received, and whether the type of deal that Coogler made is the end of the studio system or just hyperbole (04:04).

  • The Academy's board approved new rules and regulations for the 2026 Oscars.
  • Voters will now be required to see all nominated films before final voting.
  • Anonymous voters previously told EW they hadn't seen many of the contending titles and performances.
The Academy is tightening its procedures around Oscars voting, with a new set of rules approved Monday by the group's Board of Governors.

In a significant change to its pre-voting standards, the Academy will now require members to "watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars," according to a press release.

Tightening its rules, the Academy previously did not require voters in all branches to have seen all films ahead of voting, though some viewing standards applied to specific categories such as the Documentary and Short brackets.

When reached for comment, an Academy representative tells Entertainment Weekly in a statement that proof of views are currently tracked on Academy Screening Room, an internal service where voting members can screen titles.

"There is also a 'seen elsewhere' form that members will need to submit before finals voting," the statement continues. "If you have not viewed a title, the award category will be inaccessible (greyed). For the specialty categories, we will still require viewing in prelims and noms as usual. For this year, we will now require viewing in finals voting for all categories and all voting members."

Many Academy members have long been open about not having seen multiple films heading into the final round of voting — including several voters who spoke with EW anonymously ahead of the 2025 ceremony.

"I'm bummed because I haven't seen The Substance or I'm Still Here yet. The first Dune, I couldn't get through; I'm not rushing for another three hours of Dune. There's still time to re-evaluate, but I really struggled," one director told us, while a casting director added: "I haven’t seen The Brutalist yet. I’m planning to see it, and from what little I saw [already], it’s similar to The Pianist, and [Adrien Brody] already got his Oscar for that. So, maybe someone else deserves a chance [for Best Actor]."

Other changes to the Academy's rules and eligibility requirements include category rules for the new Achievement in Casting category.

The new category will proceed with a "preliminary round of voting to determine a shortlist of 10 films, and prior to nominations voting, Casting Directors Branch members will be invited to view a 'bake-off' presentation of the shortlisted achievements, including a Q&A with the designated nominees."

Another notable alteration includes an indication that generative AI used in the making of any film will "neither help nor harm" the chances of achieving a nomination, though "each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award."

The Academy previously announced that, in addition to the forthcoming inaugural Casting category honor, the 100th Oscars ceremony will additionally include an Achievement in Stunt Design competitive category that's set to roll out in 2028.

Hot off the Academy's 2025 ceremony, which saw Anora win Best Picture, the group revealed that first-time host Conan O'Brien will return to host 98th telecast as well.

The 2026 Oscars air Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC.

Warfare

PRAISE : This is the type of movie that makes you feel every minute of it. The monitoring of what could be a hostile and deadly situation. One that surrounds you with boredom and being on edge while maintaining some type of sense of humor. The pain,of injuries the shells hock and panic. All of this is strengthened by a great cast including: D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Ray ,Will Poulter as Erik ,Joseph Quinn as Sam, Charles Melton as Jake, Cosmo Jarvis as Elliot, Kit Connor as Tommy and Michael Gandolfini as Lt Macdonald
The story about a Navy SEAL team that, in 2006, got pinned inside a house in Ramadi, Iraq during the American occupation never really let's up. It is beyond involving .I felt i was right in the cramped quarters with them feeling all types of anxiety. Hats off to the sound design group that captures every intense moment and blends in the heaviness of thunderous bass. The closing shots are sobering and then some. Its right up there with 2013's Lone Survivor

PROBLEMS : NONE. Warfare is one of the best movies of 2025

Has anyone seen this? The reviews are horrible on IMDb

Few weeks until HAVOC… I hope it’s dope and popular enough to get itself even an EL CAMINO special event type theatrical event if not a one week type limited run.
Havoc gun fight scenes were pure ecstasy.

Havoc has the same director as Raid to Redemption, he didn't let the audience down.

:gun03::gun05:

As a gun enthusiast I love when the actor in a gun fight has to reload. Adds a layer of realness vs, scenes where the shooter keeps shooting non stop and never reloads. Doesn't matter if it's a pistol or an AR, you have to drop that mag and reload.

Slingshot
2024

5.5/10

I been sitting on this flick for some time and watched it last night on the road on Paramount+.

It’s basically a Sci-Fi Psychological Thriller based around long distance space travel within our solar system.

The film immediately gets right into the main story at the start. Story/Character Development is done thru-out the film.

The movie does a good job on portraying the rigors of long distance space travel that humans will endure traveling beyond the planet Mars.

There is a twist which should become clear midway thru the film if you pay close attention. If you do figure out what’s going on midway, the ending should still be unexpected without spoiling it.

If you are a fan of the sleeper cult-classic “Event Horizon”, that Lawrence Fishburne is also in, you should enjoy this flick.

Synopsis

An astronaut struggles to maintain his grip on reality during a possibly fatally compromised mission to Saturn's moon, Titan.
