I'm not saying the killer was right but I grew up in times where stealing money, especially from the wrong person could literally get your whole family killed. I actually know of a family in which this happened and the only survivor was a little girl (now a grown woman) who survived a headshot by playing dead and now walks with a limp and can't speak clearly.
