Now that Godzilla vs. Kong is set to duke it out Wednesday, director Adam Wingard is free to reboot another beloved IP. According to Deadline, the Death Note and Blair Witch director has signed on to direct a motion picture based on the 1980s animated children’s show ThunderCats, which follows the adventures of Lion-O, Cheetara, and a host of other feline humanoid aliens. The initial series ran from 1985 to 1989, with Cartoon Network airing a reboot, developed by Ethan Spaulding and Michael Jelenic, for one season in 2011. The ThunderCats movie’s screenplay, written by David Coggeshall, with Wingard and Simon Barrett doing a rewrite, reportedly finds the ThunderCats fleeing their “dying planet Thundera” to find a new home.

On Monday, Wingard told Deadline that he has been obsessed with ThunderCats since childhood, even going so far as to write a movie in his spare time. “I actually spent most of my 10th grade year, I completely blew it,” he says. “I didn’t pay attention in school, made terrible grades. And the reason? I was writing my ThunderCats screenplay through my entire 10th grade year. And I was hand-writing it. The screenplay itself ended up being 272 pages long.” Honestly, given the length of the Snyder Cut, Wingard might be able to just produce it as is.

While his movie will allegedly be a live-action hybrid, the director vows that the ThunderCats themselves will not look like any other cats you’ve seen before. “This is a huge passion thing for me. Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about ThunderCats as I have,” Wingard says. “I want to do a ThunderCats film that takes you back to that ’80s aesthetic. I don’t want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like ThunderCats.”

“I don’t want to do it live action, either,” explains the director. “I don’t want it to look like Cats, I don’t want those kinds of issues — no disrespect to that director, whom I don’t mean to throw under the bus any more than everyone else has. I want to do a movie you’ve never seen before. A hybrid CGI film that has a hyperreal look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI.” Hey, nobody plans on their film looking like Cats; it just happens. If things go awry and Wingard ends up with another Cats on his hands, hopefully he’ll at least do the right thing by his audience and release the butthole cut.

ThunderCats: Everything We Know About The Live-Action Reboot
Everything we know about Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard's ThunderCats live-action reboot film- crew, release date, and story details.

BY EMILY CLUTEPUBLISHED APR 06, 2021
Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla vs. Kong, has announced that he will be spearheading a ThunderCats live-action reboot film. The announcement comes years after a planned ThunderCats film failed to get the green light, and fans have been celebrating the news of the long-awaited live-action film. Wingard broke the news in an exclusive interview with Deadline.

ThunderCats started as an animated series in 1985 before booming into a franchise of comics, action figures, video games, and television reboots. The series centered around a group of warriors known as the ThunderCats, who were cat-like humanoids who made Third Earth their home after their planet was destroyed.

RELATED: Why Godzilla Never Attacked Kong Before GvK

Wingard is the first filmmaker to sign onto a movie with Warner Bros. after their controversial decision to release their 2021 films to HBO Max along with their theatrical releases. Wingard says that Warner Bros. "loves" Godzilla vs. Kong and that they gave him the reins to take on a pre-existing ThunderCats project and make it his own.

Why ThunderCats Has Taken So Long

A ThunderCats live-action reboot has been in the works for a long time. A CGI-animated film was announced in 2007 and set to release in 2010, but the film was never greenlit. Test footage and concept art from the 2010 film were eventually leaked online, but nothing else of the film was ever seen. Rumors and celebrity interest surrounding a ThunderCats live-action have popped up throughout the years, but fans had almost given up on a ThunderCats film ever happening. With '80s reboots like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power taking fans by storm and Master of the Universe in the works, it's about time for a ThunderCats movie.

ThunderCats Story Details

So far, there hasn't been much information on what a ThunderCats story could look like — that's because Wingard and his writing partner Simon Barrett have taken on a complete script rewrite. A script had already existed for ThunderCats before Wingard signed on to the project, written by David Coggeshall, but writing a ThunderCats script has been a life-long passion for Wingard. The Godzilla vs. Kong director had written a 272-page-long screenplay of a ThunderCats film in the 10th grade, so Wingard describes ThunderCats as a "dream project."

Though there hasn't been much detail on the story, Wingard has said that he intends to stay true to the classic ThunderCats, both in mythology and aesthetic. In an interview with Den of Geek, Wingard explained that he wants the ThunderCats reboot to feel like an '80s cartoon adventure that adults and kids alike can relate to. Moving away from the live-action appearance of Cats, the Godzilla vs. Kong director hopes a unique CGI hybrid animation could blend together the hyper realism of a live-action and the original aesthetic of the cartoon series.

ThunderCats Cast And Crew

While there have been no announcements on a possible cast, ThunderCats has amassed an impressive crew behind the scenes. Director Adam Wingard is fresh off of directing Godzilla vs. Kong, which has grossed almost $200 million worldwide. Scott Barrett, Wingard's co-writer, is known for writing scripts for horror movies like You're Next, V/H/S, and The Guest. Producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee — who were producers on Wingard's Death Notewere already attached to the project when Wingard signed on, which increased his interest in the project.

ThunderCats Release Date Info

Currently, there is no release date set for ThunderCats. As Wingard and Barrett have recently undertaken a complete script rewrite, it's likely that ThunderCats will not be hitting theaters in 2021.

Nah it would be more like you had a lot of beautiful ladies but their attitudes suck, nobody came over to dance with me, I heard they were charging an arm and a leg... but you definitely had a bunch of beautiful chicks as far as eye candy... will they comeback a 2nd time due to that prob not or maybe, would they recommend the spot to other people maybe/maybe not... the returning, the recommending, and them being satisfied with the overall experience is what a good biz man wants... the quick dollar person gets happy he convinced dudes to come through and dosent care about their experience... my bro is 1 of them types that could watch any movie or find something good about a flick his exact response to King Kong vs Godzilla “yeah I saw it, I’ll probably never watch it again, would I recommend it? I’ll just tell people I saw it and it’s up to you if you want to view it”... coming from my bro that says a lot

WTF is this shit?

A decade ago this waa viral before viral

People went crazy

That type of editing from a FAN? Was crazy.

And it is actually reasonable for studios taking a live action adaptation seriously

Will probably NEVER happen that movie would be ridiculously expensive

But interesting how everyone how keeps trying references this fan made trailer.

The Terry Crews casting is a horrible idea.

I agree...

And let me clear it has nothing to do with him being a coon. Because he did great work on EHC, that walking dead anthology, white chicks.

But he is NOT Panthro. Vin, Tom Hardy, Michael Jai White, Kevin Grevioux could be.

Also Terry Crews cannot and should not play one of the most iconic animated series mentors of a generation.

When he himself is still lost as f**k
