Ultraviolet
1998
7.5/10
This series popped up in my tubi recommendations after I watched the earlier film I reviewed “Tales From The Crypt”. I watched a episode a day in the morning before starting my work day this week and finished this morning at home.
I had never heard of this series so when I looked it up, I discovered it originally released on BBC in England. It later debuted on the SyFy channel in the early 2000s. They made a US pilot to reboot it starring Idris Elba, but it never made it past the pilot.
The series revolves around Vampires. The Vampires come out of hiding prior to this shows debut due to the effects of climate change and its affects on the human populations blood supply quality.
Without spoiling it, there are some other things going on with the Vampires.
This is a 6 episode series, each episode runs about 50 minutes. The producers did a good job making it a “Limited Series” in case it did not get renewed. You can watch it like that, even though the last 20 minutes of the season finale is going to get you Thirsty for more.
The series is a slow burn and has a similar vibe to the “The X-Files”. The main plot of this series would be perfect for Ryan Cooglers upcoming “X-Files” reboot instead of it focusing on Aliens.
Idris Elba co-stars. While watching you gonna think he is “Luther”. His character has the same demeanor and behavior of Luther. He also does the hands in the pocket bit. You can clearly see he used this character for Luther.
For the Militants, there is some interracial tension between Idris and his White female co-star. Nothing is shown.
Synopsis
The six-episode series, first aired in 1998, stars Jack Davenport as Detective Sergeant Michael Colefield, who discovers a secret government vampire-hunting unit while investigating the disappearance of his partner. Made up of soldier Vaughn Rice, scientist Angela March and Catholic priest Pearse J Harman, the unit's goal is to track down and exterminate people infected with a disease called `Code 5', which is transmitted via a neck bite. Colefield inadvertently becomes part of the unit after he finds his partner too late - he's already infected, and Michael is forced to `kill' him.
