Buffs reveal underwhelming non-conference football replacement games

The Colorado Buffaloes announced five future home games to their future non-conference schedule on Tuesday, replacing games they lost by joining the Big 12.

Athletic Director Rick George says CU will face Delaware on Sept. 6, 2025, Weber State on Sept. 12, 2026, and Northern Illinois on Sept. 18, 2027. Perhaps the marquee on the list of cupcakes is two matchups with fellow in-state school Northern Colorado on both Sept. 16, 2028, and Sept. 13, 2031.

“With our move to the Big 12 and having some of our existing home-and-home series turn into conference games, we had an opportunity to take a new approach to scheduling,” George said in a news release. “With the expansion of the College Football Playoff, we want to be strategic leading into conference play with some Group of Five and FCS opponents earlier in the season. I am confident this strategy will give us the best chance at a berth in the CFP, an expectation that Coach Prime and I both share.”

Colorado lost three previously announced home-and-home series when they joined the Big 12 earlier this year. The trio of sets were all against about-to-conference foes in Houston for 2025-26, Kansas State for 2027-28 and Oklahoma State for 2036-37.

The five new games replace two existing home games, two existing road games, and one open date, giving CU seven home games in 2025, 2027, 2028 and 2030. With nine conference games scheduled, the Big 12 will be in a similar pattern to the Pac-12 rotating between four and five home and road games every other season.

“Folsom Field is an amazing place for college football and one goal I’ve had is to create opportunities for more home games,” George said in the release. “We haven’t had more than six home games since 1982 and just twice in our 134-year history, so I’m extremely excited to give our fans the opportunity to see us at home more often in the future.”

While the home games are nice, the five new games secure that Colorado will not play a rivalry game between either Nebraska or Colorado State in any of the years with new games. Clearly, the Buffaloes have gone for the easy route over creating a big nonconference clash. And it’s hard to know which strategy will be correct in the changing landscape that is college football, especially with an expanded 12-team playoff going into place next season.

The schedule for next year remains unchanged, Colorado will start with the always-tough lower-division North Dakota State before traveling to both Nebraska and Colorado State. Then they’ll kick off conference play. It’ll be the last time the Buffaloes play a rival until they meet the Rams again in 2029. There is no future dates with Nebraska set, the Buffs have beaten the Huskers every time they’ve played since each left the Big 12 the first time.

The Buffaloes had a few major non-conference matchups on the future slate, with five home-and-home series and 11 overall non-conference games against other Power 4 schools in the next eight seasons. The SEC’s Florida will face CU in 2028-29 and Missouri matches up against their old conference rival for the first time in ages in the 2030-31 seasons. The ACC’s got Georgia Tech against Colorado in 2025-26 and SMU facing the Buffaloes in 2030-31. After the Nebraska series expires next season, the Big Ten will only have Northwestern against Colorado on the future slate, facing off in 2026 and 2027.

Colorado now only has one open date on their future schedule until 2031, coming in the 2029 season. And the Buffaloes have already announced a home-and-home series with North Texas in 2032-33 and continuing games with Colorado State in 2033-34 and 2037-38. It will be interesting to see when the Buffaloes will face their first former Pac-12 school again that isn’t joining them right away in the Big 12.

More home games, easier opponents and perhaps some cheap wins before a strong conference slate is the hope—setting up the best shot at the College Football Playoff. The downside is the loss of some early-season luster in Boulder.

I updated my comment. I thought he signed but he has not.

I mentioned when Jordan Seaton first committed that i didn’t think he would stick. It had nothing to do with Coach Prime or the staff. If you followed his recruitment, he was very iffy.

Rumors were circulating that he was not solid with the buffs. After he made is natural tour, I thought no way he would back out. But here were are smh

Maryland seems to be heating up and lots of smoke and Oregon

Tough news for Buffs fans but I can understand and not be upset with the kid. Maryland also has the following:

1. Black head coach
2. Black staff
3. Offensive line coach Brian Braswell who is black and has put linemen in the NFL and coached on the NFL level
4. NIL Bag - at the end of the day money talks. Hard to turn down $500 to $1,000,000

At the end of the day, at least it is for a Black head coach and staff

Today has been a disappointing day. Colorado did not flip anyone and lost a few players on signing day. The current recruiting class is ranked 95th and last in the Big 12. So were do the Buff go from here?

POSITIVES

Despite a 6 game losing streak, the Buffs were a well coached team even though they had glaring holes in talent and depth. I mentioned on here many times, despite the offensive line getting most of the spotlight for bad play, if the defense was marginally better, the Buffs are probably a 3 to 4 loss team. That would have put their record at 9-3 or 8-4.

I do think they have improved their roster from last season. Last season, the defense was dead last and could not stop anyone. If the defense improves slightly, those close games could become wins.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT

Coach Prime will have to take recruitment serious and hopefully he realizes that he can't recruit from the internet. Other schools are in players homes, communities and schools. The " I ain't hard to find" just wont cut it. You have programs out there signing 30 blue chip players and the Buff signed 6 total high school recruits and only 2 were blue chip players. That simply will not get it done.

PORTAL

More players will enter after the bowl games and spring so they will have the opportunity to grab some more defensive players.

Transfer portal king Deion Sanders again reels in top transfer recruiting class

Colorado's coach overhauled his roster with transfer players for 2023 but this time took a more targeted approach. Will it make his team that much better?

The transfer portal king has struck again.

After pulling in the nation’s No. 1 class of college football transfer recruits for 2023, Colorado coach Deion Sanders signed 16 new transfer players this time for a transfer class that again ranks No. 1 for 2024, according to Rivals.com and 247Sports.

The signings were confirmed Wednesday by Colorado on the first day of the early signing period for recruiting. It included four offensive linemen — part of a strategy by Sanders this time to fill glaring needs on a team that finished 4-8 in 2023 and gave up the second-most quarterback sacks in the nation last season with 56.

"I definitely think we have a big, big, big shot at taking it all the way and winning this thing out, because the guys we got coming in — I’m not gonna lie — these are some dawgs," former Indiana offensive tackle Kahlil Benson told USA TODAY Sports Wednesday after signing with Colorado. "This team is going to be magnificent. Just watch. We comin'."

Who else did Deion Sanders sign?

In addition to the transfers, Colorado was expected to sign nine high school players who committed to play for the Buffaloes, including the nation’s No. 1 offensive line recruit, Jordan Seaton. However, Seaton’s signing was not confirmed at Colorado as of Wednesday afternoon. On Tuesday, he posted a meme on X, formerly Twitter, that suggested he was having trouble making a decision.

But even if he doesn’t sign, the Buffs still reinforced their blocking front with the likes of Benson, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound right tackle who transferred from Indiana with two years of eligibility remaining after starting 24 straight games in the Big Ten Conference.

On Wednesday, Benson posted the news of his signing at Colorado with the hashtag #DT2, which means “Don’t touch 2,” a reference to the jersey number of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders, the coach’s son, ended the regular season with a fractured back after being the most-sacked quarterback in the nation (52 times).

"He's not getting touched no more," Benson said by phone Wednesday.

Benson said he'll make sure of that, along with Justin Mayers, a transfer guard from Texas-El Paso, Tyler Johnson, a guard from Houston, and Yakiri Walker, a center from Connecticut. Johnson ranked as the No. 1 interior line transfer recruit, according to 247Sports, and has one year of eligibility left as a graduate student.

What was the strategy this time for Deion Sanders?

Last year, he overhauled the whole rosterwith 47 new scholarship transfers from other four-year colleges. They helped the Buffs improve from 1-11 in 2022 to 4-8 in 2023, including five losses by seven points or less. This year, he targeted deficiencies on his team such as the offensive and defensive lines. He also added two transfer quarterbacks, part of a plan to add “older quarterbacks,” as he revealed to USA TODAY Sports this month.

“You’ve gotta fill a void,” Sanders said in the interview with USA TODAY Sports. “You’ve got a great quarterback (Shedeur), but if something transpires and you plan on winning, you need a guy to step right in, to fill those shoes that’s a leader.”

He landed Kentucky quarterback transfer Destin Wade and Vanderbilt transfer Walter Taylor. Each has three years of eligibility remaining after not getting much playing time at their previous schools.

Shedeur Sanders also will have new weapons at his disposal in 2024, along with new blockers and new backups. Colorado signed wide receiver Drelon Miller out of high school in Silsbee, Texas — the ninth-highest-ranked player to sign with Colorado since 2000, according to 247 Sports.

He’s joined by Vanderbilt transfer receiver Will Sheppard, who led his team with 684 receiving yards in 2023 and has one year of college eligibility left.

Colorado’s overall recruiting class, including high school players, ranked No. 21 on 247Sports as of Wednesday, behind Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State in the top three.

Many people thought I was hating but I have been following Jordan Seaton for two years. That was the only reason I said I didn’t think he would stick. What threw me for a loop was that he was taking subliminal jabs at CU. One jab was a few days before he committed.

Jordan Seaton is just what happens in recruiting. If you follow recruiting this happens. For a kid that is number 1 in his position, the decision can be tough because so many choices are available.

He has until Friday to sign because he is an early entry. It doesn’t seem like the Buffs are in the drivers seat and it appears to be down to Nebraska and Maryland

Well hopefully if he doesn't choose CU, he goes to Maryland. Coach Mike is solid and from the city.

Seaton doesn't have to sign by Friday. He has at least until August 24. No wonder the kid is tripping.

I’m wondering if his NIL value jumped which after his ranking increased from 50th(which people was laughing at when He committed to the Buffs) to top 15th.

Also, think about this…. Dude signed before all of the heat came. I think 6 linemen signed after he committed.

Now he being able to wait until then later don’t make sense after he talked about getting there early.

Kinfolk sounded all good on TV, probably thought he Could flip Boo Carter but that ain’t happened.
Dude from the east coast and sound like he wants to be around his folks or atleast one friend on the team.

I will say this, there is “no heat” Jordan Seaton would be the best offensive lineman as soon as he steps foot on campus and it won’t be close. He is that good. His film absolutely leaps off the field.

Remember I mentioned that I questioned the commitment but thought it would be weird to do a national TV campaign just to not sign. I thought no way but here we are.

I followed his recruitment for two years. (Miami was on the radar). This is what I know from people close to the situation. He was never a “Solid commit”. With him it was always going to come down to the wire. So this was not a real shocker.

Gerty Mac…. Has jumped into the transfer portal

He makes excellent points but they kinda don’t totally reflect this situation

I’m willing to bet Prime made all of that happen(for as going on TV and Plenty of other stuff) and they looking at it like damn homie

Shedeur just messed around and hit send or submit
