It has been done before. Most of the robotic submersible have a tether or umbilical that provides data and information (fiber optic lines), air supply and recovery and/ or power. This genius billionaire skimped on that though. That is why this was stupid.

Not only that, it is one of the worst controllers out there. Logitech makes good racing wheels but their controllers have always been crap. Joysticks are okay but Thrustmaster builds better ones.

I run an ROV at 10,000 feet hooked to an umbilical. They can order a tether or umbilical that long. It's not like this shit is made for speed or maneuverability.

in my uninformed opinion - its not about the length - its about the environmental conditions on the tether itself and how it will effect a vehicle carrying people-
and also consider that a different sub of similar type and size -a year or so ago -
was pulled by currents to be trapped in the Titanic's propeller for hours
my guess is snags on the wreckage is another factor
