ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions made a bold move during the 2023 NFL draft by trading away their sixth and 81st overall picks to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for the 12th and 34th overall picks. This caused quite a stir among fans and analysts alike, who were eager to see how the Lions would use their newfound draft capital.
However, the real shock came when the Lions selected Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick, adding yet another talented running back to their roster. Many were surprised by this move, as the Lions already had a strong stable of running backs, but it’s clear that they’re committed to building a dominant ground game for the upcoming season.
The Lions’ selection of Gibbs drew immediate shock from some analysts. But it was quickly met with positive reviews of the pick.
“When you pair him (Gibbs) with D’Andre Swift and David Montgomery, who they already have on the roster, what do you think Dan Campbell is gonna want to do this year? He wants to run the football” ESPN analyst Louis Riddick said. “He’s got homerun speed, sub 4.4 speed. He can run inside and outside. And he can catch the ball out of the backfield.”
“His comparison to me is obviously Alvin Kamara, Christian McCaffrey type. And you can see why, except he’s fast. He’s a guy who can take it the distance.”
Gibbs had an impressive season, rushing for 926 yards and seven touchdowns while also contributing 444 receiving yards and four touchdowns during his final season at Alabama. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry, making him a valuable asset to the Lions’ rushing attack. Gibbs ran a 4.36 in the 40 yard dash and recorded a 33.5 inch vertical jump at the NFL combine, confirming his top-tier athleticism.
“He’s built well in the lower body, from the hips on down,” Riddick elaborated. “And he’s just one of those guys who is a three down type of player. You’re gonna have a three-headed monster in Detroit.”
Although he had Gibbs linked to the Cincinnati Bengals on his final mock draft board, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. was high on the selection of Gibbs.
“You can use him in a lot of ways. You can make him a slot receiver. You can move him wide. He can help out in the kick return game. (He’s) a touchdown waiting to happen,” Kiper said. “He’s electric with the ball in his hands. He strings multiple cuts together in one run.”
“And he doesn’t cough it up. He’s got really good ball security. So for Jahmyr Gibbs, I don’t look at him as just a running back, I look at him as a multi-dimensional, all-purpose player.”
