To answer your question, because if we see an active threat, or worse - cant perceive it - that is someone actively coming for us, our history, how and what our kids are taught, medical freedoms, wanting to give people the right to legally discriminate if it lines up with their conscience, etc and won't do the bare minimum to stop it, then what little progress we do make in this country will come to an end.

I think the problem is a lot of people either don't understand political practicality or pretend to not understand it. You vote for someone like Trump or DeSantis, he not only gets to choose a SCOTUS nominee should a vacancy arise but also gets to appoint federal judges all over the country. So, if you claim to care about, say, mass incarceration and mandatory minimums, then you should definitely worry about who is elected in the Oval Office.
