Russian State TV Says U.S. Has Declared War After Crimea Comments
A Russian propagandist has claimed on state TV that the U.S. has declared war on the country following reports of the White House's approval of targeted strikes on Crimea.
In a video uploaded to Twitter by the account TheKremlinYap on Saturday, Russian journalist Igor Korotchenko claimed the U.S. had crossed a red line by supporting the strikes.
Korotchenko's comments follow on from a previous statement made by the U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland.
According to Reuters, Nuland said Washington supports Ukrainian attacks on military targets on the peninsula and has called for it to be demilitarized. Crimea was illegally annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014.
In the video translated by TheKremlinYap, an account that tracks Kremlin propaganda, Korotchenko hit out at the U.S.
He said: "After the U.S. crossed every imaginable and unimaginable red line, today the U.S. State Department actually announced that it was going to war with Russia.
"I assume that this is how we should interpret Nuland's statement. There is no need for halftones. The U.S. is an enemy of Russia, a military adversary."
He added: "If it expects massive missile strikes on Russian territory to be carried out with their help, but as if by someone else's hands, then perhaps we can regard this as a casus belli (cause for war) and react accordingly."
Korotchenko said he wanted Russian officials to "give adequate, conceptual, doctrinal, and military responses to this audacious statement of the United States, and appropriate measures should be taken. What kind of measures? We shall see."
Michael Clarke, professor in the War Studies department at King's College London, described Korotchenko's comments as "bluster."
He told Newsweek: "This is just more bluster and repeats things being said on the channel at regular intervals.
"In order to justify the fact that Russians are now well aware that the SMO (special military operation) is, in reality, a nasty little war that is getting worse, the sacrifices the Russian public will now have to make can only be justified if the Russian homeland itself is under threat. Hence the steady ramping up of Kremlin rhetoric to justify the sacrifices required."
Clarke did comment on circumstances that Russian officials could consider a red line to have been crossed.
He added: "A Ukrainian invasion into Crimea - legally 100 percent Ukrainian territory - would probably be a red line for (Vladimir) Putin himself though possibly not for others in the Russian leadership. Equally, attacks into Russian territory - against like ammunition dumps or military assembly areas in places like Belgorod or Kursk - would be legitimate in self-defense for Ukraine as far as international law is concerned, BUT if carried out by NATO-supplied weapons, would cross a perceptual red line for the Kremlin as it could then use that as clear evidence that this really IS a war of NATO against the Russian homeland.
"That is why I am totally relaxed about NATO giving Ukraine long-range weapons alongside their promise not to use them against targets inside Russia. Because if they did, they would immediately lose Western support and hence the war. It would be so suicidal for Kyiv that I am totally confident we can take the assurances they offer as watertight."
Despite Korotchenko's comments, U.S. President Joe Biden has not called for the country to become embroiled in a war with Russia. However, the country is spending billions of dollars on military equipment for Ukraine.
NATO allies have also continually supported Ukraine following Russia's invasion nearly a year ago.
The alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Saturday, February 18, that should Russia win, it would signal to other authoritarian leaders that they could use force to achieve their goals.
He said at the Munich Security Conference: "Some worry that our support to Ukraine risks triggering escalation. Let me be clear. There are no risk-free options. But, the biggest risk of all is if Putin wins."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously ruled out any peace deal with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that cedes territory to Moscow.
The Ukrainian leader has vowed that the country will return Crimea, which is majority Russian speaking, to its territorial border.

Serious divisions are being exposed in Russia’s war effort amid a deepening public standoff between top military officials and the owner of a paramilitary force fighting alongside the regular army.
The Wagner paramilitary unit, which has ballooned in size since recruiting tens of thousands of convicts from Russian prisons in recent months, has suffered the majority of casualties since it began spearheading a monthslong campaign to take the city of Bakhmut in east Ukraine.
Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has used his force’s battlefield presence to gain sway with the Kremlin, seeking to take credit for victories such as January’s seizure of Soledar north of Bakhmut and the capture of Severodonetsk last summer.
But he is increasingly being sidelined as Moscow recalibrates its war effort, replacing the previous commander overseeing the Ukraine campaign and constraining Mr. Prigozhin’s ability to expand his forces.
Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has openly criticized the Russian military hierarchy for months.
In a series of audio messages posted to his Telegram channel in the past 48 hours, Mr. Prigozhin launched his most direct attacks yet against Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, for allegedly preventing his fighters from getting the ammunition they need to continue their offensive campaign.
“There is simply direct opposition going on, which is nothing more than an attempt to destroy Wagner PMC,” Mr. Prigozhin said, saying the ammunition was sitting in warehouses but officials were preventing it from reaching his men. “It can be equated with treason, at a time when Wagner PMC is fighting for Bakhmut, losing hundreds of its fighters every day.”
Mr. Prigozhin’s attacks came as Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared in Moscow before a hall packed with lawmakers, military officials and religious leaders for a state of the nation speech in which he focused on the continuing military campaign in Ukraine. He also said Moscow would suspend its participation in the last remaining major nuclear-arms-control treaty between the country and the U.S.
Mr. Prigozhin’s accusations preceded a visit by China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, to Moscow on Tuesday afternoon, Russian state news agency TASS reported. Mr. Wang met with Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, and was expected to meet with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, TASS reported. The U.S. has expressed concern that China may be considering supplying lethal weapons to Russia.
Ukrainian and Western officials had warned of a significant new Russian offensive ahead of the first anniversary of the invasion this week, but Russia has failed to make any significant advances. Mr. Prigozhin’s incendiary claims threaten to further expose cracks in Russia’s faltering war effort, which has largely stalled since the seizure of Severodonetsk last summer.
The comments also leave Mr. Prigozhin himself susceptible to punishment, since any statement deemed to discredit the armed forces can be a criminal offense in Russia. Mr. Prigozhin appeared to acknowledge this in his audio recordings, insisting he wasn’t engaging in extremism or trying to offend anyone.
Earlier this month, Mr. Prigozhin said Wagner will no longer be recruiting convicts from prisons, marking an end to one of the sources of troops that has helped tip the fighting in eastern Ukraine in Moscow’s favor.
Ukraine, meanwhile, says preparations for a new wave of mobilization in Russia are in full swing. Its military intelligence service on Tuesday said it had evidence that a new drive for troops would target university students among other categories of fighting-age men.
A stamped and dated document posted to the service’s website on Tuesday, bearing the name of Tomsk State University in Siberia, lists measures that the school should take to ensure the success of a new mobilization wave. The Wall Street Journal wasn’t able to confirm the documents.
Earlier this month, Ukraine warned that Russia was ready to launch a new mobilization but was struggling to integrate troops it had already drafted and was waiting to gauge the success of a stepped-up offensive ahead of the first anniversary of its invasion this week.
“Everything is ready,” Maj. Gen. Vadym Skibitsky, the deputy head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, said in an interview on Feb. 11. “The personnel is in place, the lists are ready, the people tasked with carrying out recruitment and training are on standby.”
This also comes amid a flurry of diplomatic visits to Kyiv ahead of the anniversary, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday becoming the latest Western leader to visit the Ukrainian capital and reiterate her country’s readiness to shore up Ukraine’s defense.
Following on from President Biden’s visit to Kyiv on Monday, during which he also pledged continued support to Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had discussed with Mr. Biden how to end the war with Russia this year.
“Our defense needs are clear,” Mr. Zelensky said in his nightly video address on Monday. “And what actions are needed for this—first and foremost actions by our fighters on the front line—is also clear to our partners. Only decisiveness is needed.”
Mr. Biden gave a speech to a crowd outside Warsaw’s Royal Castle on Tuesday as part of an effort to rally allies in support of Ukraine. “Brutality will never grind down the will of the free,” he said, and “Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia. Never.”

The eastern front remains the epicenter of the enemy's efforts. Thus, in the Bakhmut direction, there were 414 shellings by rocket-propelled artillery and 56 combats during the day. Defense forces destroyed 162 invaders, another 192 were wounded.
This was announced by the spokesman of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Cherevaty, on the air of the telethon, the correspondent of Ukrinform reports.
"The Eastern Front remains the epicenter of the enemy's main attack, he will continue to focus his main efforts here, in particular, in the direction of Bakhmut. During this day alone, there were 414 shellings by rocket-propelled artillery in this direction, 56 skirmishes on this part of the front. In the area of Bakhmut itself, 161 shellings and 25 clashes took place. Also, 162 enemies were killed on this part of the front and 192 were wounded of various types," Cherevaty said.
According to him, there is also a concentration of enemy counterattacks in the Luhansk and Lyman directions. In particular, the invaders are increasing artillery fire there. During the current day, there were 445 shellings by various systems and 12 skirmishes, 84 occupiers were destroyed, 68 were injured, the spokesman said.
Cherevaty also noted that the Defense Forces are relatively destroying enemy military equipment.
"Today, 2 T-72 and T-80 tanks, 2 Msta-S self-propelled artillery installations were destroyed," the spokesman said, adding that last day a T-90 tank of the most modern modification was destroyed.
Answering questions about the enemy's lack of tanks, the spokesman noted that Ukrainian artillerymen and anti-tankers demonstrate high efficiency, destroying modern T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks. At the same time, now the enemy is taking out old equipment from storage warehouses, so BMPs developed in the 60s and 70s, which were withdrawn from production, appeared on the front, as well as old models of tanks.

"We can even see something as archaic as the T-62 tank, which, in fact, no one uses on the European continent," the spokesman noted, adding that this indicates a shortage of military equipment among the enemy.
Cherevaty also reported that due to heavy losses, Russian troops are constantly replenishing their units at the expense of the mobilization.
As Ukrinform reported, from February 24, 2022 to February 20, 2023, the Defense Forces of Ukraine eliminated about 143,680 Russian aggressors, and only in the previous day - 820 people. This was announced by the spokesman of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Cherevaty, on the air of the telethon, the correspondent of Ukrinform reports.
"The Eastern Front remains the epicenter of the enemy's main attack, he will continue to focus his main efforts here, in particular, in the direction of Bakhmut. During this day alone, there were 414 shellings by rocket-propelled artillery in this direction, 56 skirmishes on this part of the front. In the area of Bakhmut itself, 161 shellings and 25 clashes took place. Also, 162 enemies were killed on this part of the front and 192 were wounded of various types," Cherevaty said.
According to him, there is also a concentration of enemy counterattacks in the Luhansk and Lyman directions. In particular, the invaders are increasing artillery fire there. During the current day, there were 445 shellings by various systems and 12 skirmishes, 84 occupiers were destroyed, 68 were injured, the spokesman said.
Cherevaty also noted that the Defense Forces are relatively destroying enemy military equipment.
"Today, 2 T-72 and T-80 tanks, 2 Msta-S self-propelled artillery installations were destroyed," the spokesman said, adding that last day a T-90 tank of the most modern modification was destroyed.
Answering questions about the enemy's lack of tanks, the spokesman noted that Ukrainian artillerymen and anti-tankers demonstrate high efficiency, destroying modern T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks. At the same time, now the enemy is taking out old equipment from storage warehouses, so BMPs developed in the 60s and 70s, which were withdrawn from production, appeared on the front, as well as old models of tanks.

"We can even see something as archaic as the T-62 tank, which, in fact, no one uses on the European continent," the spokesman noted, adding that this indicates a shortage of military equipment among the enemy.

Maybe someone posted this before but this war with Ukraine was the dumbest thing Putin could do, just like Trump being president. Trump’s bullshit keeps getting exposed but he has built up a (crumbling) wall that protected him and ignored ethics, rules and laws. This war has stunned the world by showing of alluding to how corrupt Putin’s regime has been: weakend military due to money allocated for military being stolen, how many Russian gov officials “committed suicide”, generations of the Russian population are being killed and Putin has acted like next to nothing is going on, generations of Russians are leaving the country, war crimes being documented.
