Burger King Bankruptcy. Hundreds of Stores Closing. Why?

From dirty bathrooms, employees with their feet in salad bins, rodents and insects in kitchens hundreds of Burger King stores are closing or going bankrupt. Is it time for the iconic brand to admit defeat? A major operator in the Burger King system announced recently they were declaring bankruptcy. This was 90 more of the hundreds of BK stores closing as we will look at in a minute. TOMS King, a franchisee who owned 90 BK stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia announced that their revenues during the period of the Coof had decreased and they had brought on over 35 million in secured debt and 14 million in unsecured debt. Apparently 200 potential purchasers have been contacted to buy the struggling locations. Can you think of a better investment than restaurants losing millions? If we look at net closures we see in 2020 Burger King closed 265 stores and growth has been very sluggish since 2019. You might wonder how is McDonalds doing comparatively? Well they aren't that great either closing 44 stores in 2019, 163 in 2020, and 247 in 2021 And these are net numbers with stores sold backed out, so actual closures are going to be even higher. A wise person once said you cant step in the same river twice. Many investors buy these massive brand names assuming they are the most reliable, and usually have heard of someone who bought 10 years ago and made a lot of money. But, every franchise system has a lifecycle, emergence, growth, peak, and ultimately decline. If you want to experience the same success of people who bought in 10 or twenty years ago buyers should consider looking at emerging, well positioned brands and grow along with the system. Also a newer franchise still has great territories available while all the major brands have only leftover crumbs remaining unless you buy a resale for several million dollars. A quick comparison even between Burger King and McDonalds shows that for a similar investment an average McDonalds generates 3.4 million while an average Burger King does only 1.4 million, less than half of a McDonalds. So why do people buy Burger King? Well in many cases they just didn't have access to the numbers of other franchise earnings, they didn't call Franchise City, or in some cases its the prestige of the Burger King Name. But is the Burger King name still what it once was? To me, Burger King smacks of a declining brand unable to alter its course. In my opinion it is far more likely to see a filthy Burger King Bathroom than a dirty McDonalds. Let me know if you agree. From Roaches and rodents, to filthy kitchens with employees standing in lettuce bins or mopping the tables using the filthy floor mop, these are things you don't see as often in other brands. Burger King on the whole just doesn't seem to be as buttoned up on keeping independent operators supporting a consistent standard. That seems to translate directly to profits. The brand also seems out of touch with some ad campaigns maybe trying a bit too hard. Burger King got into hot water recently with their advertising that offered two equal buns available for pride month. So you could get two top buns or two bottom buns. Even the LGB TQ community said thanks but you guys are just being gross. And yes, this is the same Burger King that today is trying to seem like incredibly virtuous citizens, but a few years ago created the ad for their "7 incher" “It’ll blow your mind away. Fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-grilled with the New BK Super Seven Incher.”

I will still get me a musty ass double whopper with cheese every now and then. Judge me if you like.

Every 2 to 5 years I would go get a triple Whopper with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, onions and ketchup. Just the burger. So about 8 or 9 years ago I decided to have one after not having had one for at least 5 years. I just wanted the burger and they wanted $7.50 at the BK on Eastchester and Boston Rd in the Bronx. I said hell fucking no.

I'm in the Bronx so I went up to Burke Ave and bought a goat Roti for $8 that took two sittings to finish it. I could have just as easily went to Smash Burgers or Five Guys if I really wanted a burger. It's just that there ain't no fucking way in hell I am paying that much for a burger from McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys or White Castle.

I have 1/3 pounder 85% lean beef patties from Costco in the freezer. If I really want a burger I'll make one for myself. That's one of the greatest lessons to be learned from the pandemic shut down. Cook your food at home and save your money.

I have a thing for a whopper with cheese every once in a while and or a chicken sandwich.....

I haven't eaten a big mac is decades cause thats trash but I would get a mac chicken,or breakfast sandwich

I'm not going to lose any sleep....we fast food junkies and I've had all of that shit when I was a kid and my body could handle that shit but now,I'm too old and I have a kid it's a treat to him to go anywhere and eat and I will keep it that way.

The US military is the only thing keeping that shitty restaurant afloat. That nasty shit is on every base, worldwide.
I’ve only eaten at a Burger King on base after getting tired of everything else.
Never been at one outside of any military installation.

I remember getting food poisoning from a BK Food Truck in Korea. Lmao!

Side note ... there used to be one that had a great location in East Vancouver. Busy thoroughfare and close to one of the old sports arenas. Stopped in there a number of times in the 90s and early 00s. Food actually tasted good and the staff gave a fuck. Lot value was worth too much and they knocked it down for some condos or whatever over time. Enjoyed going there before or after a concert or sporting event as it had multiple ways to get home quickly afterward. Easy access to the highway or residential.

Another spot was near downtown. Some interesting characters there. Always had to keep your head on a swivel, lol. Not trying to fight while I have a burger & fries.

Man, when I go to the Bronx, I always want to go to Tony's on city island but they wanted a grip for a fried shrimp platter the last time I was there.

Funny thing….the BK across the street from me always has smoke coming from the roof, and smells good, but NEVER has any cars in the parking lot or drive thru!:roflmao2:

They have one on Central Ave in BMore, across from Dunbar High. Also, across from a construction site with multiple food trucks at lunchtime. It's the closest fast food joint to my downtown crib. I admit to getting the jones for a whopper w cheese or an original chicken sammich every so often over the last few months. No problems with cost or service. But, I don't see a lot of other cars.

It is crazy reading this thread. Burger King was iconic growing up. It was neck and neck with McDonald’s. Whopper vs Big Mac was a regular debate. I haven’t had Burger King or McDonalds for years so out the loop buy crazy to ready how far it has fallen and going out of business.

Agreed. There's a stretch of road in one of the local cities which has a handful of restaurants, as well as a Tim Horton's, McD's, BK, and Subway all within 30 seconds of each other on foot.

- The Tim's is busy at all times of the day ... coffee, donuts, muffins. Long drive-thru line-ups in the AM.

- McD's ... always busy ... inside and both lines that feed the drive-thru to maximize business. I've seen 30+ cars idling waiting for the 2 lines to clear at times.

- Subway is fairly small ... often looks empty or maximum 2 - 3 people inside

- BK is relatively empty inside ... and 0 - 2 cars in the drive-thru during "busy" evening hours. Decor looks like they haven't renovated inside since the 1990s. * Often wonder how much the lease / rent or whatever is there. Surprised that location stays open ... Tim's and McD's are booming just a few steps away.

I can't remember what marketing thing I was watching and they were discussing McD's and BK and their history over many decades.

Their issue was not about food. Anyone who ate at both from way back, Booger King was always the best.

Their main issue was their marketing is what was being explained. McD's had tons of commercials and great marketing campaigns like even Ba Da Ba Ba Ba and so on. Over the years since I was a kid they always beat out BK.

Side bar, remember when they both used to have glasses you could collect. Like every month was a new glass. That was keeping you coming back, keeping customers engaged.

They do none of that anymore.

McD's is adjusting to the times by removing employees and making stores fully automated. BK closing its doors. Smh

these fast food restaurants haven't been in the "food" business for at least the last 40 years.
BK mickey d's, wendys, are all in the real estate business.

a movie a few years ago called -the founder- michael keaton as ray kroc showed how mcdonalds did it-
they make their money off buying the land its built on and charging the franchisees rent each month.

that's why their food has declined
