He owns a production company and only does projects that he owns the rights to (or that he approves) so he likely had it planned out from the first one as long as it was financially successful.

I remember when he bought the rights to the Equalizer. That's when you know you're big. Many of the A listers own their productions....Tom, Reese Witherspoon, Will, etc.
