  • Black Girls Code founder Kimberly Bryant has been removed as the leader of the nonprofit.
  • Its board said it was investigating claims of "workplace impropriety" but Bryant remained on staff.
  • Black Girls Code teaches girls tech skills and has partnered with Google, Facebook, and Nike.

Kimberly Bryant, the founder of Black Girls Code, has been removed as head of the nonprofit by its board.
"Press release: so it's 3 days before Christmas and you wake up to discover the organization YOU created and built from the ground up has been taken away by a rogue board with no notification," Bryant tweeted.
In an emailed statement to Insider, Black Girls Code's board said Bryant remained on the company's staff while "serious allegations of workplace impropriety are being investigated." It said it had appointed an interim executive director to manage the nonprofit.
Bryant did not respond to a request for comment from Insider. She tweeted earlier that she was preparing a formal statement.

Bryant, an engineer who previously worked in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, founded Black Girls Code in 2011. The nonprofit runs workshops, summer camps, and other programs to teach girls technology skills in areas such as web design, app development, and robotics. In 2016, Insider named Bryant one of the most powerful female engineers of that year.
The Oakland, California, nonprofit has chapters in 16 cities, and its programming has reached more than 30,000 participants.
Black Girls Code has amassed support from companies such as Google, Facebook, IBM, and Nike. Its board, which the nonprofit announced in 2018, includes prominent Black leaders in technology and entrepreneurship.
Among its directors are Stacy Brown-Philpot, the former CEO of TaskRabbit and a member of the SoftBank Opportunity Fund's investment committee; Sherman Whites, a director at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a nonprofit that supports entrepreneurship; and Heather Hiles, the founder of the education-tech company Pathbrite and the managing director of the venture-capital firm Black Ops.

Bryant's tweets drew an outpouring of support and sympathy from many in the tech community who expressed shock at the news of her removal from the nonprofit's leadership.
"This is an unfathomable mess handled in the most unjust way humanly possible to a woman who was a huge part of building this movement," wrote Karla Monterroso, the former CEO of Code2040, a nonprofit focused on racial equity in the tech industry.

I'm a little confused, is this like when Apple "fired" Steve Jobs? It doesn't seem your traditional corporate bullshit most of the board appear black.
Yes, many people including so many on this board do not understand how corporations work and operate. First, understand that a "non-profit' is still a corporate business. The main difference between a for profit and a non-profit organization is how the profits are distributed. That's it. A non-profit does not mean that people do not get paid nor that it does more good than for profit organizations.

More importantly, a board of an organization is over ALL executives, including the CEO. So, if you hear someone incorrectly say that a CEO is paying himself millions, they are wrong, the board decides salaries and who's hired in senior positions. I literally just went through an interview process and sat in front of the board while the "CEO" sat there twiddling her fingers. Lol!!!

Another difference is that when Steve Jobs was "ousted" he still was an owner and retained several shares of stock with the company. Unfortunately, with a non-profit, there are no shares. So, she's out without any other ties to the organization. F'd up.

That's a vague term and weak allegation. More detail is needed regarding this matter before I take a position.
Is it financial mismanagement, failure to follow operational procedure, job underperformance? What is the reason?

This is one of my biggest gripes with nonprofits and corporations in general. The real power lies with the board of directors.

As the infighting was occurring, Bryant said in an August interview with Inc, that over the years, others have told her how to run her business, including changing its name to broaden its appeal beyond Black women and girls. "Our name is Black Girls Code, and we're unapologetic about that and we wouldn't budge," she said.

On Tuesday, Bryant learned that she had been pushed out of the company after she lost access to her computer and email account.

They did her dirty
can't enter your email or computer lol
not even a call or nothing

be careful who you take money from to fund your dreams

So, who should have the power? The one CEO? No shade, just seriously wondering your thoughts.

It depends on the field of the corp imo

Tesla? NO there needs to be a board there needs to be checks and balances so that a maniac can't take over the world and kill us all.

Getting black girls to code? I think that's safe. Her ultimate goal is to get black girls to get into coding if she achieves her goal then that is a net + in the world.

all depends on the ultimate goal of the corp IMO.

I hear you. But, I would argue that when an organization gets to a certain size, running an effective and efficient organization becomes unmanageable for one person. Realistically, from the beginning, she could have structured the organization so that the board was under her.
ideally...
board of trustees (legally obligated to function as fiduciaries)

but most don't protect their non-profits with trusts
Well, in this case, it was the board of trustees who voted her out. Yet, it seems that she is not all the way out. Just removed from the position of CEO.

dude-
if its profitable - the board is legally obligated to help the next CEO / Chairman baby Hitler achieve global supremacy

just ask gm & coca-cola how much profits in supplying ww2 axis nations

We're talking perfect world here lol
Not actual practice. Elon is a menace and is unchecked for the most part
Boards don't do shit REALLY for the most part and in most cases. Long as the money flowing they rolling.

Power being the only thing that matters so have a board under her like you said but she gets final say on everything.
When it's YOUR dream you need to protect it I'm sure she didn't even believe it would reach where it is and thus this is happening
She's OUT

she is terminated... email and network access gone
she on payroll because of her contract

and-nope - this is not a Trust

if it was- there would be lawyers combing through this to verify if rules of the trust were violated

boards don't work like that
only way to keep control
1. no real board (very hard unless self funded and well connected)
2. form a trust - rules of trust only able to be changed with unanimous vote of trustees

I'm going to withhold judgement until the "“serious allegations of workplace impropriety" are announced. If she had been a man the thread would be 20 pages already with rumors over what really happened...

a focus on building toward something truly beneficial is the antisis of a mindset for preserving power....
worse -its very hard to navigate the corrupt, fight off the complacent and entitled, and the grifters - to then guard your own back against snakes and saboteurs

Yall fools better put some dam respect on my brother vicious name when he preaching.

I'm curious, how is Elon a menace? I really admire Elon for how ambitious his goals are and how great the steps he has taken to achieve them. I am interested in getting information to challenge this.

Well 1st he was born on 3rd base his father owns a diamond mine so he's never struggled
2nd he didn't invent the company he bought it out and took over so Tesla isn't even his idea
3rd he's a life-size troll that can really do good and help but doesn't
4th all in our neck of the woods he hired nothing but illegal European workers who were damn near getting killed.
5th as soon as California, the place that gave him the cred and space to build something asked for money in the form of taxes to help he moved to texas.
6th has faulty parts that will be recalled soon but is paying to play essentially.
There's other things he does toying with the financial institutions that have no regulations that he's fucking a lot of people over on without a care in the world as well.

Elon is tridash to me.
