Brooklyn Nets to bring back Kyrie Irving for road games outside New York, Toronto

  • The Brooklyn Nets are bringing back All-Star guard Kyrie Irving as a part-time player for games outside of New York and Toronto, the team announced Friday.

Irving, who has been unwilling to satisfy New York City mandates and become vaccinated to play in home games or road games at Madison Square Garden, will be eligible to play in select road games once he is able to pass a series of COVID-19 tests and get back into shape, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The unfolding circumstances of Brooklyn's season -- injuries, seven players including James Harden lost to health and safety protocols and an inordinate minutes load on Kevin Durant, who won't play Saturday against Orlando due to right ankle soreness -- led the team to the move.

"We arrived at this decision with the full support of our players and after careful consideration of our current circumstances, including players missing games due to injuries and health and safety protocols," general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. "We believe that the addition of Kyrie will not only make us a better team but allow us to more optimally balance the physical demand on the entire roster.
"We look forward to Kyrie's return to the lineup, as well as getting our entire roster back together on the court."
The point guard's return isn't expected to happen quickly. Irving has to test negative on five successive days before he can rejoin the Nets. Once he returns, he must test every day as an unvaccinated player.

  • New York City's mandate allows Irving to practice at home, and the Nets agreed with Irving on a plan that would allow him to start ramping back up for a return, sources said.
The team's next road game is Dec. 23 in Portland Trail Blazers, followed by a Christmas Day matchup at the Los Angeles Lakers and a Dec. 27 contest at the LA Clippers. That stretch is followed by three more home games.
The Nets have 27 road games remaining but two are at Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Knicks, where Irving would not be able to play until he complies with the city's mandate. He also is currently ineligible to play on March 1 at Toronto, where travel for unvaccinated players across the Canadian border will be prohibited starting in January. Brooklyn (21-8) has 26 homes games remaining.
Still, having Irving back for road games is something Nets owner Joe Tsai, Marks, coach Steve Nash and key players fully supported -- and Irving has been eager to get back as well, sources said. Irving, who last practiced regularly with the team during the first week of training camp in San Diego in late September and early October, can start practicing at the team facility, though it remains to be seen when he will be able to do so with his teammates.

  • The team might not have a full practice for some time because of the schedule and the number of players in health and safety protocols. The Nets start a home back-to-back stint Saturday against Orlando before playing Denver on Sunday. Monday is a scheduled day off. They play the Wizards at home on Tuesday. The team is scheduled to fly to Portland on Wednesday before facing the Blazers on Thursday.

  • The circumstances have changed dramatically for the Nets since Tsai, Marks and the team made a collaborative decision on Oct. 12 to not have Irving be a part-time player.
Harden missed the past three games. Meanwhile, Durant is averaging 41.1 minutes in his past nine games and will be held out on Saturday to rest the ankle. Patty Mills also will rest.
"It's a really important topic," Nash said of Durant's playing time before Brooklyn beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114-105 at Barclays Center on Thursday night. "I don't know we can continue to lean on him the way we have. It doesn't feel right."
Nash later added: "It's not safe or sustainable to lean on him like that. There's gonna be a lot of consideration and we'll have to figure out ways to give him breaks."

  • In addition to Durant and Mills resting, seven Nets are in the protocols -- along with Harden, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre' Bembry, Bruce Brown, Jevon Carter, James Johnson and Paul Millsap are out. Center Nic Claxton is questionable with left wrist soreness. Sharpshooter Joe Harris has been out as well due to left ankle surgery.

Lesson to the pro-whites and shot pushers. The so-called white man hates us but will show respect to a brotha that is smart and has principles. This is an example of that.

Much respect to Kyrie for telling them he wouldn’t be a pawn and he would handle things his way. End result? He called the shot and they complied, no pun intended.

They just want him to get film and trade him

    What fuckery is this? They supposed to ride KD until his body gives out. Why the fuck they giving in? What? The virus takes off on road games? Did the science change? This some bullshit. Fuck KD.

KD can’t play that many minutes anymore especially in the regular season with a surgically repaired Achilles. The team weighed the risk and after what’s been happening the last month, their only regret will be not doing this sooner

Ya love ta see it!
Imagine if more of us stood up to the Neanderthal like Kyrie did? They would cave because they know who is superior. I’m not pro or anti-vaxx but you can see the only people upset with this news are the pro-whites / shot pushers like @CoTtOnMoUf :smh:

@gene cisco is just mad because the Cavs are a legit playoff team this year but barring injury, their shot just ended, no pun intended

Fuck selfish ass drama queen Kyrie. Letting him play is just an indication of how desperate the Nets are. KD is playing his ass off but him playing 40 plus minutes every time out is not sustainable and Harden's game is up and down, mostly down.. The Nets should held Kyrie to his contract and not have paid him a dime for refusing to honor it.

Can't play in Cali so that's the rest of the leagues problem lol

They must've did a add on last night. Jalen, Willbon and Perkins said It was just New York and Toronto during last nights Boston/Golden state game. If I'm not mistaken They said he'll be playing 24 games in total.

Stupid arrogant "I ain't taking that shit" fools like Kyrie Irving apparently didn't learn a damn thing from Covid last year when it was taking people out by the tens of thousands daily.

Well Covid will have them in class again this winter and teach them an even harder lesson. Just keep playing with this virus and refuse to get vaccinated. Continue to refuse to wear a mask in public and mingle in crowds of unmasked people and watch what happens. You can bet a whole lot of anti-vaxxers and their like minded relatives will be gasping for air and on ventilators and thinking to themselves, "I wish I had taken the shot:. :hmm:

New York State broke their own record yesterday with the most cases in 1 day.. 4 schools had to be closed ..all schools in nyc all kids ages 12 and up have to be vaccinated as well as all staff members.. all the schools that were closed were junior high/high school… which means all these people were vaccinated yet mad kids and staff still caught it.. so there goes that theory of blaming the unvaccinated

You’re ‘pro-white’ for calling out drama queen Kyrie Irving? Even worse Kyrie Irving is ‘pro-black’?

Weirdos. Good chance Nets will face GS or Clips in the Finals too.

Because you are vaccinated does not mean you will not come down with Covid. The important thing is getting the shot almost guarantees you will not die from it. You can be vaccinated and still be a carrier of the virus. Infections on the rise in schools probably result from kids and staff bringing it into the schools from home or other outside sources. :hmm:

I know you can catch it being vaccinated.. the death thing is up in the air but most unvaccinated don’t die from it either.. just pointing out that we need to calm down all this vax/ unvaccinated shit and all this finger pointing crap.. know that anybody can get it if not following possible protocols.. hell look at the nfl outbreak lot of those nigs vaccinated so all this uproar shit need to calm down and just be careful on how people move

On this issue most vaccinated people are calm because they know the pros of taking the vaccine far outweighs the cons. It's the ignorant and science deniers who are all in a tizzy because of Covid mandates.

As to your point that most unvaccinated don't die from Covid you may be correct. But would you rather be vaccinated and suffer symptoms much like the flu or would your prefer a near death painful touch and go recovery on a ventilator as a result of not having gotten vaccinated?

This is fear mongering speculation. The average person under 60, vaxxed or not, will suffer symptoms like the flu.

Yes because the only people pushing the shot are people that are following the flawed decision making ability of the so-called white. No grown man should be letting other people tell him what to do if he isn’t with the program. That is all about discernment and principle. Only sheep blindly follow instruction with no questions asked. Plenty of people got vaccinated because it was best for their health but MOST got it because of fear and cowardice aka the pro-whites and shot pushers (the pro-whites that want everyone to suffer because of their dumb decisions)

As @tallblacknyc pointed out, the vaccine mandate for NYC is causing record numbers of positive cases. The people following the fear are the ones suffering the most and it is unfortunate to see so many listen to a race of people that have done nothing but use and abuse us since first contact.

Kyrie stood up like a man and told them he wasn’t going to follow what they said becayse it didn’t work for him and his family. They couldn’t even last two months before bringing him back. Just imagine if more of us had Kyrie’s mindset?

Looks like the people “going to class” again are the vaccinated, the selfish ones, that continue to be the catalyst for all of these new cases. :smh:
