Staggering US wealth inequality heaps long-term harm on to minority children
Black children have access to just 1 cent for every dollar enjoyed by their white counterparts, new research shows, and Hispanic kids fare little better

African American children are suffering long-term disadvantages as a result of vast and growing disparities in the wealth of US families, with Black families with kids having access to barely 1 cent for every dollar enjoyed by their white counterparts.

The shocking racial wealth gap between families, and its impact on Black and Hispanic kids, is revealed in groundbreaking new research by scholars on US inequality. It shows that the basic wealth levels of families from different racial and ethnic backgrounds have diverged to such a stark degree in the past three decades that the future prospects of children from lower-wealth groups are likely to be grossly compromised.

In 2019, the median wealth level for a white family with children in the US was $63,838. The same statistic for a Black family with children was $808.

Hispanic families with kids fare little better. They have a median wealth of $3,175, which equates to 5 cents for every dollar of wealth in an equivalent white household.

“A relatively small group of parents – mostly white – control the lion’s share of the wealth available to children,” the authors conclude.

Wealth is calculated by aggregating a family’s assets and subtracting from it their debts. The median for white families largely consists of the value of the homes they own minus mortgages, with additional wealth coming from savings and inheritance.

Among Black families homeownership is much less common, as are savings or inheritance, which collectively shrinks the median wealth to the paltry figure of $808.

The alarming findings are contained in Wealth Inequality and Child Development, a compilation of the latest research published by the Russell Sage Foundation. It lands at a critical time for the American child, with Congress debating the extension of a new stimulus package that has the potential to lift more than 5 million American kids out of poverty.

In March, the Biden administration introduced a child tax credit designed to help families with children caught in the poverty trap. It provides for $3,600 a year for every child under six, and $3,000 for older kids.

But the measure, which experts have described as transformational, expires after a year. Whether becomes permanent now depends on Congress as it grapples with the US president’s $3.5tn budget plan which, in its current draft, would extend the provision.

At stake is nothing less than the American dream, the aspiration popular among politicians of both main parties that anybody can make it no matter how modest their beginnings. Christina Gibson-Davis, a professor of public policy and sociology at Duke University who is co-editor of the new research, pointed to one of its central findings – that wealth inequality between American families has become so extreme that 1% of parents control 44% of all wealth held by households with children, while the top 10% control 82%.

“When the top 10% of parents control 82% of all the wealth in child households, that opens up opportunities and choices they make for their children that are not available to the bottom 90%,” Gibson-Davis said.

Such glaring disparities profoundly influence kids’ potential as they emerge into adulthood. They touch aspects of life that can make or break a child’s life, including the neighborhood they live in, the schools they attend, how secure they feel, how well they perform in exams, their behavioral record, and their health.

“Wealth is so stratified by race and ethnicity that it perpetuates that racial inequality into the next generation,” Gibson-Davis said.

The US stands out as an outlier compared with other industrialized nations in terms of both the approach to childhood taken by policymakers and governments, and the extent of inequality that flows from that. The new research looked at 14 industrialized countries, including Australia, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom, and found that the US was exceptional in the extent of wealth inequality between children and older age groups.

Gibson-Davis, who edited the volume alongside Heather Hill of the University of Washington, said that the unique position of the US reflected the country’s political climate, which was notably less inclined to help children than other nations. “We’ve chosen to let the market determine wealth levels.”

The corollary of that decision, she said, was that “we are OK with having winners and losers in the childhood wealth lottery. White kids born to well-educated parents are going to enjoy relatively high levels of wealth – the vast majority of kids don’t have that luxury.”

Why did they try to downplay that Hispancs are doing 4 times better? Also, this shit is grim all the way around because they are counting primary residences as assets. There's a reason why that shit don't help with becoming an accredited investor. 60 fucking thousand counting primary residence is poor. :smh:

So basically, U.S. is a mess and black folks getting the worst end of it all. It's only getting worse because everyone in the slow cooker. What's worse is that people think they going to vote themselves out of this shit.

Financial education is key. Not history. Not gender studies. Not learning most that other bullshit they got children locked down from 8-3 learning. Parents got to use this Internet to figure the game out then teach their children. Otherwise they repeat the cycle.

This is sad shit guys. I understand this is where everyone are millionaires and shit, but dont yall get tired of being the only Black person on your 1st class flight to Hawaii. I am.
It pains me to see our people fucked up here like this. I've said it before and have no shame, that the only way the rest of our people are getting out this is with Gov't assistance. Damn you all who thinks otherwise!

Socialism yep... capitalism is the devil

The hard pill to swallow is WE have stop waiting on others to help us. We know racism exists. We know that the system is designed for us to fail. We have heard all of the narratives. But, we have to be the ones at the center of helping ourselves. It starts with regaining pride as a people. Putting shame back into our culture. We need to set expectations beyond average. STEM has to become the norm for our children. Families have to stay together.

We have set the bar too low while being bamboozled by politicians, interest groups, and movements that have done nothing but distract us from our real problems.

Man, I'm saddened just typing all that.

Don't you find it interesting that some black and white pundits have been telling black folks that the idea of "pulling yourself up" is a bad thing? Don't you find it interesting that as a whole, we believed this idea and now we are worse off than ever? Don't you find it interesting that with all of the stimulus money they gave out, none if it was ear marked to help a poor person permanently change his or her financial situation? Don't you find it interesting that when a black man talks about economic empowerment and self-accountabilty, the same concepts of Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, and MLK at the later part of his life spoke about and believedwholeheartedly, that black man is called a coon or other epithet in an effort to persuade other black men and women from heeding the message of empowerment.

I find it interesting you are the only poster to attack an individual instead of speaking on the real problems and offering insight. Brothers like you are a nuisance, counterproductive, and subconsciously working to keep black folk a permanent lower class.

I'm not attacking you I'm attacking your stance. I've spoke on the real problem as you say numerous times in numerous threads. How am I working to keep black people a lower class by not subscribing to the if we all work hard everything will be ok bullshit while ignoring the forces that crush any kind of real movement when threatened? If you read enough history you would know this is the playbook of America. Capitalism needs super poverty to survive. Who else is going to work the crazy hours to make the billionaires rich? Now days, when they speak about the "BLACK FAMILY" this references a new structure which is no Father in the home.

Stats show majority of black men are and continue to do well financially. This is average earning Black Men.

It's the "Single Mother Household" leading the way in poverty with her various kids by different men.

Show me a hard working man, average earner, if he is in the home with a cooperative woman I can almost guarantee his kids have a bright future compared to those of a single mother.

Sadly households run by a man and a cooperative woman are the new unicorns. The overwhelming majority are dysfunctional single mother lead households. Kids born into this situation have extremely limited chance of escaping poverty.

In the next 2 to 5 years there will be another explosion in crime, tougher crime bills, and more prisons built. These new batch of young kids were given a raw deal in life. Failure to control, teach and educate them in the home will cause society to fulfill that role. Society will not show these kids mercy, or care about their feelings. That school to prison pipeline about to burst, meaning there will be far to many for the system to rehabilitate.

My home was broken into three times over the span of four years. (all happened while I was at work) Nothing of value was taken but the repairs were annoying. Each time, neighbors said the same thing, teenage kids were spotted running in the wooded area in the back and my alarm was blaring.

I mention my home break in because these same kids of poverty will prey on us the "BLACK" working folks.

Sadly these kids will reproduce an the cycle will continue.

Now we have East Indians, Hispanics, Immigrants from Caribbean, and a ton of Afghanistan refugees pouring into this country. Each of these groups for the most part have fathers in the home with cooperative wives who understand patriarchy.

That's a large group of minorities who do value family, education, and most of all hold each other accountable. They will take advantage of the sacrifices of our ancestors died for paving the road meant for us but we failed to hold ourselves to task.

Black kids in single mother homes, and dysfunctional homes are fucked! These next 2 generations of black folks will have it really bad because competition will be fierce to succeed and make it out of poverty. However as the article states, most black kids are starting life already at the back of the bus before they are even born.

Tito, what you are failing to take into account is that classes of people are created by government policy. The white middle-class was created by post-WWII government policy. The Black “underclass” was created by government policy, or, rather, benign neglect, which is a form of policy unto itself.

This is far from being a “new structure.” I’d point you the works of E Franklin Frazier and WEB DuBois as references. It was an existing structure that the welfare system and feminism exacerbated. Have you ever heard of Moynihan’s scissors?

No we’re NOT! I’d love to see what stats you’re referencing.

This isn’t true either.

Plenty of Black kids who grow up “middle-class” become poor adults.

And you’re overlooking the stats on Hispanics n this article and generally. 50% OOW birthrate amongst them.

Every single word of this. Thank you.

Black people still waiting on white folks to "come around".

Let me tell you something folks.....that will never fucking happen.

We must begin to move consciously and intentionally in this world. That's why it's called being "woke". And we must make that change, because take note how differently we regard ourselves and how we regard them. We're quick to ridicule, mock, kill one another, but niggas straighten up when comes to white folks.

Digressing a bit here, but that's why I don't subscribe to "code switching". Aren't your own people entitled to your best self? But anyhow...

We run to spend our money in their establishments while avoiding anything black owned. We are still putting them ahead of our own in our day to day.

Change has to happen. Information age should make it easier, but gotta make those TikToks right?

I'm rambling a bit but yeah....

The thing is, not just on this issue oh, but on the issue of the food graveyards from another thread (why there are no grocery stores in the hood)

I've got a brilliant plan but absolutely no capital and I don't know how I can raise the amount of capital I need to make This brilliant plan functional

I don't want to get too deep in it, but it's about us helping us by doing what we do anyway and US policing each other because when one steals they are stealing from all of us

It is both brilliant and simplistic, but it needs to be run by someone who isn't trying to get rich off the people. This is why I want complete control over the project

Arabs and Asians are the target to be expurgated from our communities and replaced by Black-owned businesses

I am a service-disabled veteran, and utilizing that fact could get me a lot more help, but I want to help my people.

Yes, I live in the burbs, but I grew up in the hood and I never forgot about my people who still live there

Whites expect excellence; the Asians insist on it!!’ Hispanic families fair better because family means more to them. And they live in clusters, whereas we can’t wait to kick our kids the fuck out at 18. Good luck! The black family structure is dead because we are a culture of people who focuses too much on the obstacle rather than the solution. Mexicans do way more fucking but you always see that gigantic Latina with a husband. He stays even though she’s big ass a house. They force that shit to work, at least to raise the kids. Our community is so fractured that we don’t share wealth, knowledge or resources. There’s no reason for us to continually be the example of these bullshit studies. Shit is embarrassing! They only lead to one conclusion: we don’t apply ourselves. A woe is me culture. It’s too many ways to not be broke. One of em is stop fucking a bitch raw that’s can’t even see as a girlfriend, let alone a wife. Raw pussy has always been what destroyed us. Always will be. Too many single moms, and too many men with stories of impregnating women they hate before the baby is even walking. We will always be at the bottom because don’t value investments, property or free information. We care more about vanity than our overall standing in society. Whites aren’t doing too much to hold us down; we’re just using that as an excuse to not grind harder. This is a gig economy now. If you’re broke irs because you want to be.

@Tito_Jackson spoke about putting shame back in our culture and I wholeheartedly agree

The 2 and 3 and 4+ baby mamas and baby daddies needs to stop.

Nobody said stop fucking, but God dammit stop having proof

If you have 2 or more baby mamas or baby daddies and you aren't still with one of them AND/OR you've never been married or engaged

YOU HAVE FAILED

You have failed your children and you are failing your children. You are showing them the new Norm

You are showing your daughters that a man doesn't have to be in the house and you were showing your son's that a man doesn't have to be in the house

They will repeat your failures like you repeated your parents failures

The daughters grow up not having an idea what a real man looks like and your sons grow up not having an idea what a real man looks like.

How is a boy going to be a man if he has no idea what a man looks like? How is a girl going to seek out a man if she has no idea what a man looks like?

Her mother never showed her. Her father wasn't there to show her. Now she is just as lost going out into the world and BOTH her parents are to blame.

Lost children pretending to be adults knowing nothing more than sex...sex, having a job, paying bills- that's all most of them know about being an adult and there is so much more to it

**

Put those drug dealers back into hiding. Nobody's saying that they can't sell drugs. But a Hamsterdam of sorts is needed. Get it out of the open. If it's not in the open I don't give a fuck what you do

**

We need to bring successful examples back to our neighborhoods. Our kids need to see us successful, more successful than their parents.

They need to know that success is actually attainable

Doctors, nurses, purchasers, Contracting officers, lawyers, dentists, professionals. Any career field where you are making more than $40,000 a year Midwest Money (I say midwest money because that money ain't shit in NY or the DMV)

Our children need to see that black people can be successful and they have to be able to touch us and see us as being real people

If you ask your average child in the hood they see success as either being an athlete or Entertainer or sadly a drug dealer because they see that as their only ways out and there are far many other ways out than that

What We Get Wrong About Closing the Racial Wealth Gap

Key Findings
  • The median black household holds just ten percent of the wealth of median white household, and while blacks constitute thirteen percent of America’s population, they hold less than three percent of its wealth.
  • None of the myths commonly offered to explain away the racial wealth gap–a need for greater educational attainment, homeownership, or entrepreneurship; a lack of proper savings behavior, financial literacy, or commitment to “buying and banking black”; or a renewed focus towards soft skills, personal responsibility, improved family structures, or emulating successful minorities–come close to accounting for the vastness of the gap.
  • Often these myths aren’t just wrong, but the exact opposite is true. For example, on the topic of savings behavior: “A study conducted by the Institute on Assets and Social Policy using the 2013 Survey of Consumer Finances found that, at comparable levels of income, whites spend 1.3 times more than blacks.” Or, when it comes to prioritizing education, black families tend to be more supportive of children’s education (through direct financial support) than white families in similar households and socioeconomic positions.

Nothing in your statement is wrong. Nothing.

I remember watching a movie called Instinct with Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding jr.

In the movie was the silverback gorilla who had been in a cage for 20 years. If I remember correctly, after 10 years they removed the door from his cage and he didn't even notice.

He had been trapped for so long that he stopped thinking about escaping. They removed the door and he stayed in the damn cage

Dwight Mann ain't gotta hold us down anymore because we stay in the cage

Fucking bitches raw that we can't see as a girlfriend or a wife. She's just a wet hole. A nut. Now she's a single mom.

Now he's an absent father that even if he were to see his kids every weekend would still be an absent father because that kid would still be confused on what a man is and what is he to the household.

Another part, how many of us know what a good man is?

How many of us know what a good man looks like?

How many of us know what a good man acts like?

How many of us you know how a man is supposed to treat his woman?

How many of us know what a man is supposed to teach his son?

How many of us know what a man is supposed to teach his daughter?

How many of us know how to show our sons and daughters how to treat their mother?

I went down to visit some friends of mine in Fayetteville North Carolina back in January. I stayed with them for three weeks just to get away from home

I watch my friends who are both retired, on 100% disability from the military making just over $3000 a month EACH tax-free.

I saw how they interacted with their children. I saw how they interacted with each other I saw how he treated her and I saw how she treated him. I saw how they solved problems and I saw how they interacted

For the first time in my life I saw a functioning couple over an extended period Of time and I am 44 years old.

That's wild

My parents were married for the first eight years of my life and I never heard them say I love you to each other. I cannot recall them ever kissing on the cheek or the forehead of the lips oh. There was no love there

Insightful, accurate, succinct, and honest.

Racism in housing especially the past is a big factor in today's wealth gap. The government basically gave poor white trash houses in the 40s - 50s and they were able to pass that down for generations.

But recently the single mother family dynamic has really accelerated this wealth gap. Without intact families we will never rise and the cycle of bastard baby culture is growing and continuing in our community.

And every other community is simply passing us by.

Because you have stated numerous times that the idea of accountability and "pulling yourself up" is a white man's concept and a talking point of Rs. I am simply advocating for black folk to do what is within our power to do. Making sure your kids go to school EVERYDAY and put forth real effort EVERYDAY is on us. Not the white man or the system. Not having children out of wedlock or having so many children that one can not afford is on us, not the white man or the system. Setting the expectation that either college, trade school, or the military is a requirement is on us, not the white man or the system.

Actually, I am not. I am fully aware that this government needs a permanent underclass in order to operate as design. But, the reality is this, it doesn't have to be us. Talk to black teachers who work in black schools. They will tell you that many of the students who are not succeeding are doing so because their parents don't care. And this lack of caring translates to no expectations of the child, which then translates to no effort by the child to succeed. Why? Because they do not see the point or fully grasp the concept of preparing for the future. This is on us. Look at all of the corruption in public education in predominantly black cities. School boards stealing money or falsifying documents. Local governments doing the same. Many of these are black cities run by black folk. Can't blame the white man for that. Can't blame the system because in those cases, we are the system.

You got 40+ year old mothers thottin it up on the gram.....sometimes with their daughters. That's not on the white man, thats on us.

At some point, we have to look in the mirror and say, "damn, what part am I playing in my own demise."

Can't blame the system because in those cases, we are the system.

You got 40+ year old mothers thottin it up on the gram.....sometimes with their daughters. That's not on the white man, thats on us.

At some point, we have to look in the mirror and say, "damn, what part am I playing in my own demise."

You are making anecdotal arguments. You say you are “fully aware that this government needs a permanent underclass in order to operate as design. But, the reality is this, it doesn't have to be us.

But it does. We’re bottom-casted by policy and design. What do you think critical race theory is rooted in?

Because you have stated numerous times that the idea of accountability and "pulling yourself up" is a white man's concept and a talking point of Rs. I am simply advocating for black folk to do what is within our power to do. Making sure your kids go to school EVERYDAY and put forth real effort EVERYDAY is on us. Not the white man or the system. Not having children out of wedlock or having so many children that one can not afford is on us, not the white man or the system. Setting the expectation that either college, trade school, or the military is a requirement is on us, not the white man or the system.

Brother we know that racism exists. But at what point do you and brothers like you encourage others to work to succeed in spite of. In 2021, many of the failures of our people are at our own hands.

I am a black teacher who works in a black school and your generalization is false and actually sounds like what white people say without knowing what they are talking about. We take every kid regardless of there situation and we are located in a poor neighborhood. These single mothers that are having children out of wedlock as u say send their kids go us because they WANT there kids to succeed. It's easy for you to ignore the other factors these kids face everyday even getting to school safely or trying to get a decent meal outside of school. But the proof is in the work. 96 % of our scholars graduate HS compared to the city avg of around 40%. It's easy to blame people and not policy especially when your looking from the outside and don't know what the fuck your speaking about

So basically if we tried hard enough we could overcome the racist policies and other factors keeping us in this underclass

You are either blatantly lying or being disingenuous if you are saying that black high school students graduate at a higher rate than other races. I would love for this to be true, but it is not.

Yes, many of us can and have done so.

Your attitude is, "it is too hard, so why try?" If you really are a teacher, I sincerely hope that you are keeping that perspective to yourself. It has to be instilled into our children, that although the game is rigged against you, you need to work hard or twice as hard if not harder, twice as long if not longer. Do not settle for just ok or average. Strive to be the best. No one owes you anything and do not expect anyone to give you anything.

The kids and adults I mentor all have to learn the following as their mantra.

“I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.”

"If I want it, I will work hard and get it. If I fail, I will try again work harder and get it."

"I am the master of my fate and the captain of my soul."

You either didn't read what I wrote or you don't fully comprehend it.

I never said blacks students graduate at a higher rate than white. Working in a school I know that black schools are under resourced. I said my school graduates at a higher rate than the avg in the city and is located in an impoverished neighborhood where these parents you speak poorly reside.

As far as my attitude being if it's too hard why try that's bullshit. Working hard is fine but it doesn't work for everybody because of other factors. The stereotype that poor people don't work hard is rooted in racism and false. The generalizations must stop. Some people work hard and still can't get that job. Others work hard and achieve working for whitey the rest of their lives making him rich. You want to paint all poor black people with one brush but I work in this area and I see all types

Props for the post @VAiz4hustlaz but seeing some of the responses show a lot of brothas are lost in the narrative. This is the main issue for me (economics) and as mentioned it is by design. It is more of a wealth canyon. It is a generational thing and somebody’s has to make the sacrifices needed for their descendants moving forward. We are competing with people that are centuries ahead of us and we don’t have ownership.

Welcome to the new modern family.

Women with kids, now turned lesbians raising children, NO MEN!

Socialism yep... capitalism is the devil
As long as humans involved, everything is fucked up. It just becomes about degrees. There is no perfect system with humans. Humans have proven to fuck up both socialism and capitalism.

You think the black leaders running Cleveland for the last 50 years don't know about policing for profit and the food graveyards? They just don't care. You could have all the money in the world to throw at this problem and they will undercut it. Until we get real leaders, situation is fucked.

$63k vs $800?

Start here. Challenge your BGOL brethren who say black men should never get married. Who think tearing a woman down and rudely pointing out flaws and whats wrong with her in the most hurtful and embarrassing way possible is somehow going to encourage her to do better and encourage change instead of making her defensive, resentful, and possibly causing her to become depressed and try even less. Who don't want to take on a leadership role, yet want to sit in judgement of every thing and every one who isn't doing as well as they are. Who don't recognize their own failings and how they contribute to all the things they say they despise when it comes to black folks vs other races/cultures.
