They went after him primarily because of his warpath against Wall Street putting their ass in check. Spitzer was a leading contender for future POTUS or as a VP running mate or senior POTUS cabinet position like US Secretary of Treasury and the powers that be did not want that.

Can't see a senate run being in the cards for him either, and that would be just about the only other elective office I think he'd be interested in. Without a successful impeachment, he gets to get his pension, which is substantial, and he still has his law license, so he'll be ok.... but he's a political creature from a political family and is used to being important.... so he'll be miserable while being ok.
