It's a stupid argument on Smith's part. I don't give two fucks about Ohtani speaking English. Ichiro is one of the greatest athletes I've had the pleasure of seeing perform live. One of the fastest if not the fastest player I've ever seen run to 1st base. Didn't hurt his marketability one bit. Niggas who never watch baseball know who Ohtani is.
