Mortal Kombat movie earns a sequel, trailer out

Mortal & Mediocre

PRAISE: If you ever loved video games like Mortal Kombat and Pit Fighter like I did you will find things to like and cheer about in this 2021 film version of the game.
The story : Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.

I got a lot of laughs out of this one especially from Josh Lawson as Kano from beginning to end his character was entertaining .Some truly funny and salty one liners are coupled with the fight sequences.
Other actors do their best to represent the popular characters in the game.
I admire their commitment to the choreography in the fight scenes.
There are plenty of good kills that are not for the faint of heart and tons of fan service. The sets and SFX were pretty good.
Honorable Mention to Sisi Stringer as Mileena you gave it to them nice and nasty !!

PROBLEMS: Nothing about the plot really grabbed me. The animated Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge actually had a more involving plot .There is a cheesiness that envelopes the movie and it comes through via the acting especially when actors try to deliver lines with urgency but sound like they are reading their lines off a teleprompter.
It's funny how it's stated over and over again how characters have to reach a level of Chi or whatever to get their full powers but it seemed pretty simple to attain by just doing something simple.
With the characters that keep popping up throughout the movie I was actually shocked they left some out.

Scale of 1-10 a 6

The movie was ok.....not trash, there have been waaaay worse movies made.....but yes it could have been better.

To answer the question Bei-han was no longer human, Tsang made him apart of his army. He was now undead just as scorpion was. If you saw his face during the last battle it was no longer "normal."

They are setting up the trilogy they have planned. For a first time director it was shot well, but the story and pacing killed what was so promising after they 1st 7 minutes....

I'm disappointed. Movie wasn't ass but should've and could've been much more. Better than the original movies but that's not saying much. Opening minutes with Scorpion vs Sub Zero that were released online were the best parts of the movie for me

Nigga please

The original one is still the best video game movie of all time.

This one was fire and reboot retro style.

I’m glad they left out all that faggitry MK after MK4

KABAL>>>>>

When they showed NightWolf >>>>>>>

I need my nigga Striker and where the fuck is Katana and Jade

I like how Mileena was black

KABAL is my favorite character and he was the best, lui kang had to cheat.

How the fuck was that Kung Lao cousin ancestor but not him???

Why is scorpion a “good guy” and Noob Sabat bad????

How the fuck they gonna combine both sub zeros????

Kano was cool but they had him like he was a main nigga or something.

Why I need a second movie to get Johnny Cage????????

Sheeva???

Kintaro????

Rain?

Ermac??

The opening was good between Scorpion & Sub-Zero. The fatalities were good. Everything else could have used a re-write.

The Pre Mortal Kombat story was not the way to go for a reboot. Scorpion being good never makes sense to me for some reason.

Sub-Zero was a menacing villain. The sequel bait was too heavy. Felt like an unfinished story with under=utilized characters.

I didn't enjoy this like I initially thought I would. It's better than Annihilation. So that's an accomplishment.

By the way quick cut editing in a movie developed from a fighting game is offensive. Mileena was a winner though. My 2 cents.

This is a first time director and he was told there were gonna be at least 2 more movies.....hopefully with the sequels comes a bigger budget.....and maybe a better director

I'm not sure what a success looks like in a Covid movie era to warrant a sequel. Not saying it won't. I just don't know where the goal post is.

I'm always a fan of telling a coherent story with slight hints of sequel baiting. Compared to an Amazing Spider-Man 2 approach to sequel baiting.

I think this movie crossed that line. Saving Johnny Cage for a sequel while introducing a bland main character is too far for me.

I think pre kombat was ok considering the first tournament was told so much times through MK1, original movie, 90s cartoon and MK X. The movie didn't feel like an origin movie despite the fact it was.

Cole was a blessing and a curse. Liu Kang is the main character in the history of the IP and to see him again as the main character would've been tiring. BUT like most people said Cole wasn't needed considering they have 30 years of characters to use.

I'm looking forward to the original Subzero becoming Noob Saibot and his younger brother taking up the mantle now.

I feel like they might combine MK1 and MK2 story for the sequel.

James Corden tackles singing the Mortal Kombat theme song with mixed results

Fatality, indeed.

James Corden is definitely a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to performing — the late-night host has proven his singing chops in movie musicals like The Prom and Into The Woods as well as Carpool Karaoke. On Monday night's episode of CBS' The Late Late Show With James Corden, the host tackled singing the Mortal Kombat theme song in honor of the recent release of the film. And, well... let's just say there are some areas where he has his work cut out for him.
In the video skit, Corden shows up at a recording studio decked out in proper '80s gear prepared to lay down some vocals for the Mortal Kombat theme song — a techno beat where the words of the video game are yelled over and over again. But his first attempt doesn't go so well. After being told to do it again with "a little more energy," Corden does, singing the words a little better. It still doesn't seem to work, though.

"The game is called Mortal Kombat, so maybe more like a primal scream. Just let it out," coaxes the producer. A very serious Corden attempts once again... only to forget the words. He then starts shouting out random words that sound like "Mortal Kombat." And right when the producer is ready to throw in the towel... he finally gets it right.
EW gave the film a C, noting "the new Mortal Kombat unfortunately doesn't bring the same kind of ingenuity to adapting the video games it's named after." Still, the film managed to take in $22.5 million at the box office on its opening weekend, making it by far the top grossing film and giving a nice boost to theaters attempting to rebound in the wake of the pandemic.

You don't have to follow the games exactly. Like Marvel, you can use the source material as a jumping off point. Cole's existence proves they took liberties.

As long as the characters act like you would expect them too.. I don't see why someone else can't win the tournament over Liu Kang.

I think if the writing & directing were on par with this movie, then following the story exactly would have only marginally improved the over all product.

I think the movie should have stuck to the tone of the opening. If you're trying to be the "gritty" reboot, you probably don't want to fall for obvious fan service traps.

Hopefully they have learned what worked & what didn't with this movie based on feedback & improves going forward if a sequel happens.

I liked it, I‘m not looking for the meaning of life in a MK or Marvel or DC or Capcom movie. Everyone is a critic these days holding onto nostalgia. I’m just glad it’s was not PG-13.

“For the Lin Kuei“ - I loved this line

Imma go against the grain and say it was good, cheesy but good. They upped the production values by a hunnid and it came out pretty solid. I hated the original so this was a big step up for me. Once again WB is trying copy off of Marvel especially with the end credits. Also, it was unapologetically R rated which helped a lot. I really enjoyed Kano's ass too he was the comic relief.

I just rewatched a few episodes of the mortal kombat: legacy series

Why the hell didn't just continue this?

I thought it was cool, could've been a lot better, tho.

Definitely stopped the movie to CSI Mileena. Sisi bad then a muthafucka.

I liked Kabal and Kano.

I would've liked to have seen Kitana, Baraka and Cage. Probably because MK II was the one I played the most. I got lost after MK 3 when they added like 40 muthafuckas.

Cole Young was boring. Whole time I was thinking he was gone turn into Scorpion or some shit that would make his story worth it. I understand they kind of used him as a bridge to connect the more human-like characters and their world to the more supernatural ones, it's just that him as a character wasn't interesting. And then they also kind of undermined his story by having Scorpion just pop up anyway.

I didn't like Reptile not being a ninja.

I didn't like the casting of Raiden. Casting in general could've been better.

I didn't like Liu Kang just chilling while my nigga Kung Lao got murked.

If seems like they're going to stretch this out in multiple movies, and in that case, I think they should've just did a series.

Glad I saw it for free.
