DMX, the rapper known for such hits as "X Gon' Give It to Ya" and "Party Up (Up in Here)," has died after he was hospitalized following a drug overdose last week. He was 50. News of his death at White Plains Hospital in New York was confirmed Friday in a statement from his family.
"We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days," they wrote in a statement provided to EW.
They added, "Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. DMX struggled with substance abuse for many years, and was open about his battle with addiction. Most recently, the rapper canceled a series of concerts in order to check into a rehab facility in 2019, citing an "ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first."
Known for his distinctive snarling vocals and aggressive style, DMX found massive success as a rapper despite a turbulent, troubled lifestyle. His first five albums, beginning with 1998's It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, a milestone he remains the only rapper ever to have achieved. He was also known for his acting performances in films including Belly, Cradle 2 the Grave, Romeo Must Die, and Exit Wounds.

Born Earl Simmons in Westchester County, New York in 1970, DMX led a difficult life from an early age. His mother frequently abused him, knocking out two of his teeth when he was six years old. He suffered from bronchial asthma, and has said he was taken to the emergency room almost every night as a child. In an interview in 2020, he revealed that his addiction began when he was just 14 years old, when he unknowingly smoked a blunt laced with crack cocaine, given to him by his mentor.
DMX also faced legal difficulties and personal struggles throughout his adult life. He was arrested dozens of times on numerous charges, including drug possession, animal abuse, and robbery. He spent much of his life in and out of prison, most recently in 2018 for tax evasion. But his legal issues belied a devout Christian faith and a sensitivity that often came across in interviews.
"Performing in front of people is beyond a high. It's beyond a high that any drug could duplicate," he told GQ in 2019. "Just being onstage, period, and knowing that there's so much love out there. I pray before I go onstage with everyone in the room. And I end my show with a prayer onstage. And I'd say maybe 65 percent of the time that I get offstage, I'm so emotionally overwhelmed, I just break down.... I'm like, 'Who am I to deserve this?' We all bleed the same blood."

Someone posted about this interview of him talking about his friend sneaking crack in his first blunt.

Deep shit. Thought it was an excuse but actually seeing it u can tell he was genuine.

What happened to DMX when he was 14 when someone slip crack into a blunt which fucked him up for the rest of his life and potentially shortened his life drastically I saw happened before my eyes

You ever go to a party and see someone there who just doesn't belong? You know one of these things is not like the other one of these things just doesn't belong...

I had just had surgery on my left knee while I was in the Navy and they sent me home for convalescent leave - 3 weeks

Whole I was at home I went to a party with a friend of mine, and at this party this young nerdy chick that looked like a female Steve Urkel

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong

I'm on crutches and I see this chick and she's sitting at a table with about six other people. And as I'm watching the scene it's like... something's wrong here but I can't put my finger on it

The nerdy girl is talking while the guy next to her is rolling a blunt. And every time she tries to talk to the guy who's rolling the blunt somebody on the other side up her would say something to her.

At this point, I have been in the Navy for 2 years and I hadn't smoked weed in 2 years , and I liked smoking weed when I was smoking weed

I asked the guy who I came with if I could hit that oh, and he said, "Nah, man. You don't want none of that"

Now what the time I'm thinking he's talking about the weed and that he was concerned about me potentially getting kicked out of the Navy for smoking weed , so I said "Yeah, you're right."

The guy to the Nerds right finish rolling the blunt and pass it to her for her to hit first.

They let it for and she took a hit. She took another hit. Meanwhile the room was silent.

If you ever watch one of those animal shows, just before an animal gets attacked by a lion or a jaguar or some shit the Forest goes quiet as if everybody is sitting and watching and EVERYONE knows what the fuck is going on except the prey

She was aware of the puff puff pass, but someone said to her, hit that shit again. "Hit it again" and she did. Then someone said "Nah, hit that shit again."

On the 4th hit she took a long drag and then she started tripping the fuck out. She was spasming and shaking and twitching and.... she was doing some shit I've never seen anyone do who was smoking

At that moment everyone started bursting out laughing... everyone except her and I. Even a guy I came with was laughing as if he was in on the joke too

At that point I hated the fact that I was encumbered. I hated the fact that I was on crutches and I couldn't save that girl from these horrible people

I didn't know and never found out what they had laced that blunt, but I knew everyone was in on it including the guy I came with. That was why he was telling me I didn't want any of that. Not because it was marijuana and I would screw up my military career

But HE KNEW. He let that woman hit that blunt laced with crack, cocaine or PCP

I looked at the guy came with and said "fuck you man I'm going home" while he was still laughing so hard he was leaning on the door to stand up

I never found out what happened to that girl because I didn't know her but I have felt bad my entire life knowing did I was there when this girl experienced one of the worst experiences of her life. I didn't know her so I have no we're finding out whatever happened to her to her

Those people were jealous of her. They prayed on her. It's fucking sick for people to do some shit like that

I truly appreciate the efforts of everyone posting and I’m not really on “watch” but this board used to be THE main news source before anything else. Times have changed.

I (kinda) get ur drift but sex is a biological need, drugs aren't
That's not entirely correct. Drugs, cocaine for example, just like sex BECOME a biological need after introduction to and repetitive use by the physical body!!! Cocaine, Free-Base, or Crack, when introduced to the body inhibits the body from being able to naturally produce certain endorphins. The absence of this ability, thus the absence or significantly reduced presence of the elements in the body is the very basis for the addictive behavior and the need to "replace" the element artificially!!!

RIP to DM Muthafucking X! Summer of '98 in NYC you couldn't avoid hearing his shit coming from a car, window of a random building, or blaring out the Harlem Music Hut damn near 24 hrs a day. It may be hard for some young niggas to process, but there was a time when he was known as a better rapper than Jigga. I remember when we first heard "Money Cash Hoes" and couldn't wait for Jigga to finish so we could hear X's verse. You made your mark brother. Forgotten goodie below.
