Israel Adesanya vs. Jan Blachowicz - UFC 259 - Saturday 6th March 2021.....

UFC-259-Amanda-Nunes-post-fight-interview.jpg

Nunes with that official GOAT status in women's MMA at this point ...

Last loss was nearly 7 years ago to Zingano (now over in Bellator; great fight by the way).

Since then she has gone 12-0 with notable wins being ...

- TKO over Baszler
- Sub over McMann
- 2 battles with Valentina (current dominant champ at 125lbs)
- Sub over Tate in just over 3 minutes
- TKO of Rousey in under 1 minute
- KO of Cyborg in under 1 minute
- TKO headkick of Holm in under 1 round
- 25 mins of dominance over Spencer
- 2 mins of embarassment over Anderson

Great breakdown @Pipe - thanks for the information re: broken rhythm.

You're right about styles making fights.

- Gonna be interesting to see how well Miocic - Ngannou 2 plays out

- How well Jon Jones does up at heavyweight later this year or starting next year

- Interesting seeing how Izzy's match-ups have played out. He dominated Tavares over the course of 25 mins. Made easy work of Brunson. Had a respectful match with icon Silva. Had a Fight of the Year 25-minute battle with Gastelum. Didn't have much to work with re: Romero who wanted to play possum and counterfight from second 1. Embarassed Costa last year & shut him the hell up. Then had a tough fight against late-career resurging Jan B' yesterday.

- Almost makes me wish Jones stayed at 205lbs and defended against Jan.

Silva was a perfect example of Izzy letting off the gas. He declined every opportunity he had to take Silva out, and there were several, cause he had The Spider's rhythm down completely by the halfway point of that fight. He was basically just in there having fun with his idol. It kinda reminds me of when Felix Trinidad fought Pernell Whitaker and broke Whitaker's jaw early on and then basically pity-patted him for the rest of the fight cause he respected Whitaker too much to hurt him any further.

Jones' days were numbered at light heavy. His legs are starting to go. I even had him losing that fight with Reyes. He needed to go up and fight slower guys. Only issue now is that he won't always have the power advantage so he is really going to have to keep working on technique. That's not always easy for a successful fighter to do. Mayweather could do it, Wilder cannot.... So we will see how Jones shakes out.

Agreed. That was an interesting fight with Silva & Izzy. A legend in the sport vs a guy soon to become the champ (and nearly the double-champ yesterday).

Good point re: Trinidad & Whitaker.

Regarding Anderson Silva ... that was intense when Hall stopped him last fall. If memory serves correctly, Hall was to face Jacare Souza earlier in the year, but Jacare got covid the week of. Hall was rescheduled for later in the year and given Silva as the main event slot.

Whereas we all saw how things turned out for Jacare. He got KO'd viciously by Kevin Holland last year. One of the fighters of the year for real (Holland) ... went 5-0! Talking to him off his back, and highlight-reeling him seconds later. Incredible.

Gonna be very interesting to see how many years left Jones has in the sport. Miocic? Ngannou? Lewis? Gane?

Miocic is nearly retired ... Ngannou is still relatively young in his career ... Lewis is a G ... Gane is still very early in his career.

Especially now with JDS and Overeem out of the UFC heavyweight picture ...

My thoughts on the main event:

  1. Izzy seems to let off the gas just a bit when he's fighting a guy that he likes. Almost as though he doesn't want to hurt the guy as much.

  2. That being said, I doubt that the outcome of the fight would have changed even had he gone full throttle.

  3. Size was a factor, but not nearly as much as people think. This was simply a bad stylistic matchup for Izzy that his team probably didn't recognize beforehand. Jan didn't just out-grapple Izzy, but he also OUTBOXED him.

  4. Apparently no one in the world, including myself, knew that Jan actually has a superior jab to Izzy's. It's actually one of the best jabs I've seen in MMA in quite a while. For a fast counter-striker like Izzy, a strong, perfectly timed jab like Jan's is basically kryptonite. Izzy never was able to get his own timing down because Jan's jab wouldn't allow it.

  5. Looks like Jan has read some Bruce Lee once or twice. He employed Lee's philosophy of Broken Rhythm perfectly.

“Ordinarily, two people (of more or less equal ability) can follow each other’s movements. They work in rhythm with each other. If the rhythm has been well established, the tendency is to continue in the sequence of the movement. In other words, we are “motorset” to continue a sequence. The person who can break this rhythm can now score an attack with only moderate exertion.”

Every time Izzy began to get into a rhythm, he began to dance, kinda like an Izzy Shuffle, which usually means your ass if you are his opponent, since now that he has his rhythm, it will be a short time be for he times you and lands a perfect strike that you don't see coming. Jan, however, had a smarter game plan. He used Izzy's dead-giveaway dancing as the signal to break the rhythm. In the first three rounds he would use his jab to do it. Once he got tired in the last two rounds, then he would use the takedown and hold him down to win the round. Either way the rhythm was broken and Izzy would always then have to reset and start over. A smart fighter knows that every fighter's strength can also be their weakness. Jan is obviously a lot smarter than he looks, and Izzy's underestimation of him was his fatal mistake.

  6. Even though the blueprint for beating Izzy has been shown, that doesn't mean every top fighter can do it. Jan's natural style and fighting IQ made it easy for him. I think Izzy will always have a problem with Jan.

  7. However. I think Izzy actually has a much better chance against Jones than he ever does against Jan. Styles make fights. Izzy would take a Jones fight much more seriously and put on the weight and focus on his grappling defense. Jones does not have nearly as good a jab as Jan does, and I don't imagine that he would be humble enough to try and develop one in time. I think Jones is much more likely to get sucked into Izzy's rhythm and then get lead exactly where Izzy wants him to go, which is exactly how Izzy usually wins.

  8. If Jan had been more aggressive like many people on here are saying, then he himself would have been the one that would have been KO'ed. He would have been playing directly into Izzy's hands at that point and Izzy would then be able to lure him into a trap like he usually does. Jan was too smart for that.

Nice to know that Teddy Atlas saw exactly what I saw. He just dropped this today. (It's already queued up)

Yeah Nunes is weak on her back. Most of her losses is her on the ground

I just watched all the fights from UFC 259 and the Early Prelims had the best fights by far. The Prelims were pretty good and the Main Event was just barely OK.

That Nunes/Anderson fight was laughable. Megan was scared out of her mind. To fight Nunes, you have to be an animal willing to take the chance of getting hit to try to deliver a good shot to Nunes. I don't even think Amanda raised her heart rate 5 points during that damn fight. There is nowhere for Megan to go at this point. They need to cut her or she is going to have to cut down to 135, which I'm not sure is not even safe for her to do.

Yeah if you re going to get knocked out get knocked out swinging and that chick is way too tall to drop to 135lbs I guarantee she walks around at 160-165Lbs. You can't go into the championship fight scared Nunes is not Tyson go in there to win.

Real talk Nunes is going to run through all the strikers she will have trouble with strikers who can grapple. Her bottom game is not good. She isn't bad on top though.

Thanks for the stats. His podcast is worth a listen ... TSN MMA Show. Usually 2 episodes a week. One is primarily interviews, and the other he hosts alongside former Glory fighter "Bazooka" Joe Valtellini.

They bring him (Bronsteter) and Robin Black in here and there on TSN for MMA analysis during the week, and post-fight after events.

Agreed. You just have to say fuck it ... and go all out. Go out there and fight like Matt Serra in that historic first fight upset of GSP back in the day. Just fight.

It'll be interesting to see where she ends up (Anderson). Bellator, Invicta, Rizin, PFL, One?

Should be interesting to see how many years Nunes has left. She's already certified her GOAT status in women's MMA.

Too bad we never got a rematch with her and Cyborg. That was so damn impressive how Nunes got her out of there in under a minute a few years ago. Just said fuck it and threw hands with her.

Many still want to see a 3rd fight with Nunes and 125lb champ Valentina S' ... though Nunes is already up 2-0 in their fights.

Nunes can beat strikers like Cyborg. The field isn t deep enough yet.

I havent looked at Kayla Harrison I have to see her fight. I ll check out some youtube clips.

Judo background - very strong, powerful build. Interesting side note - she also trains at ATT in Florida. On good terms with Amanda and respects her as the best. Said ideally she'd like to face her one day, purely for competition's sake.

@Helico-pterFunk what I will give Nunes is that she has beaten the elite of women's MMA. She has beaten future HOFers........easily.

Agreed. She's on another level. It's one thing to beat people. It's another when you're disposing of Rousey and Cyborg in under a minute apiece, Holm in under a round, Tate in just over 3 mins, Anderson in just over 2 mins. Combined those match-ups right there are less than one 3-round fight. Wow. Whereas she's faced tougher competition and seemed more human versus the likes of GDR, Schevchenko, and Zingano.

I'm glad she's been around to elevate the game of others around her. They are NOT fucking with her until they get much better.

Gotta love that power and accuracy.

:roflmao3:

You would have laughed had you seen the reactions at the house party (2018 or 2019?) when she fucked up Cyborg. We were losing our shit. People were like WTF?
Dude... I could imagine. I was going crazy as well!

BTW.... I always love to see Rousey getting her ass kicked by Nunes. I laugh every time.

Rousey took over a year off ... and returned to get completely dusted by Nunes. What a return, lol.

As for Nunes - Cyborg ... I think everyone in the MMA world was expecting a very tough battle. Plenty of momentum swings. At least a good 15 - 25 mins of the potential 5 rounds. Instead Nunes was like - "Nah, fuck that ... watch this ..."

:thumbsup::cheers:

Welp.... Megan Anderson has been cut from the UFC. I'm sure Bellator will pick her up. They will feed her a bunch of tomato cans and make her a star. That's the Bellator way :smh:

https://www.lowkickmma.com/megan-anderson-released-by-the-ufc/
The fact is that division is weak right now. Hell Megan Anderson was out of her league as a Number 1 contender. Its fine but they need to put the 145lbs weight class in the prelim fights in order to build it up. No one is in it.

Wait what?!!! Mir and Tarver?! That's a fight that's happening?

That's what I gather from news reports in recent weeks. Mir moved over to BKFC (hasn't fought there yet) post-Bellator, but is apparently able to take this fight. Unsure if him and Tarver are also getting PPV points, or just set contracts.

On an interesting side note ... his daughter Bella started her amateur MMA career last year. She seems legit so far.

Shoutout to the Lee family over in One as well. 2 sisters and a brother all compete under their banner. The youngest Victoria just joined the org' recently at 16yo and won via sub. Older siblings = Christian and Angela.

Damn... Interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out for this fight and Mir's daughter's career.
