But the Secret Service was directly protecting the VP. Pence was in that room. It looks like the Capitol Police got a stand-down order. They could probably only draw weapons under a specific condition. Secret Service is not going to fuck around with anyone. They don't have a boss outside of the POTUS.

This is the most prudent route at this time. Trump is thinking about pardoning anyone arrested in the riot (as well as himself and others), and it appears that the situation has many layers to it (i.e., it appears that the planning and execution of the attack was an inside job). Biden may have to work with some people who were/are a part of all of this, so while he may have to tread (somewhat) lightly, the DOJ can go full blast on everyone involved (as they should). This is a fucked up mess all the way around, and there's still a lot of shit that's going to come out that will shock some (but not everybody).

However, Hogan, who requires the Department of Defense’s authority to mobilize his National Guard troops, said he was “repeatedly denied” approval to do so from the Pentagon despite being “ready, willing and able” to assist.

Hogan said he had a “back and forth trying to get that authorization” and that, about an hour and a half later, Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy gave approval to send his troops to Washington, D.C.

Forbes has reached out to the Department of Defense for comment.

I’ve been trying to pull my thoughts together for a few days now, seeing this shit up close and personal in DC was jarring but not entirely unexpected. The rise of fascism over the last 4 years has been particularly concerning to me as someone who has more than a passing familiarity with fascist movements in the modern era and I’ve been beating this drum pretty heavily here on bgol and irl. This shit is not over by a long shot. If anything you can consider the events of Jan 6 as an instructive trial run for the authoritarians in our midst. The incoming admin needs to root this shit out and confront the challenge seriously because these folks can’t be negotiated with. They are recruiting heavily and as millions of DJT votes show... they’ve been mainstreamed. They won’t respond to flowery language about unity. Fascists only understand power (and the vacuum in its absence). Another thread being missed by media is how many legit nazi/fascist orgs coordinated at this event (and their likely connections to police/lawmakers).

The fact that Hogan is calling for Trump’s removal is actually not surprising. Hogan and Trump have been at odds for months due to Trump’s handling of COVID-19. Hogan has been fighting hard for Maryland in terms of testing, getting supplies (including vaccines), following medical recommendations, and the opening and closing of businesses, and he's clashed with Trump openly about it many times. He's one of the few Republicans who have actively stood up to Trump in terms of his handling of the pandemic.

It's a shame that NO ONE is talking about COVID-19 anymore, despite more and more people getting infected and dying. Not to mention that the attack on the Capitol was also a HUGE superspreader event - and most of those assholes didn't even care. I didn't see a lot of masks in the pictures. And they're gonna go back to wherever they came from (most of them sure weren't from DC) and infect others. And a spike in cases and deaths is expected. At least during the protests last summer, most of the protesters had the good sense to wear masks.
