I have a bad back and am high risk for covid. I waited too long to request a mail in ballot (my fault) and went to the polling place to ask about the wait in line twice before I actually voted. There was no way I was going to do 2-3+ hours. I guess I could have brought a chair but my polling place is always light so I would have voted tomorrow if I couldn't have done it early, but I was expecting the lines to let up after the initial 1st week rush, and they never did. Normally for early voting it's 30 min tops. The 2-3 hours here is in an area not trying to suppress the vote, just high turnout. The third time I saw the curbside voting sign and voted that way. Other places are not so lucky.
I am happy to see some places do what they can with mail in voting, early voting, curbside, 24 hours etc, but 11 hour lines are intentional. Most work days are only 8-9 hours. I know everyone was told to plan their vote, bring meds, snacks etc, but it's just not convenient for everyone. Not everyone has a baby sitter. If they bring kids with them, chances are they will need a restroom breaks etc.
People shouldn't have to take half a day to vote and if they are going to have to do it, then by all means make it a federal holiday. Not all people will need it, but have the protections in place for people who do.
