Negotiations for next week's Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal UFC welterweight title fight are done, sources say, and both fighters have agreed to terms to compete next Saturday at UFC 251 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

That's a massive hurdle cleared for the promotion which worked to salvage Usman's presence on the card after Gilbert Burns was forced to withdraw Friday night. But it's not the only hurdle left to overcome in an effort to make this fight a reality next weekend.

At the time of this writing, Usman is en route to Las Vegas, while Masvidal, who flew from South Florida to Las Vegas via private jet, landed earlier in the day.

Once in Las Vegas, both fighters must check-in to the host hotel, take a coronavirus test and then quarantine while awaiting the results. If they pass the test, they'll be cleared to fly to Abu Dhabi most likely Monday. If they don't, the fight can't and won't happen.

For the past two months, the UFC and Masvidal were far apart on contract talks to make this fight happen. In the end, the UFC decided to walk away from negotiations about a month ago and gave the title fight to Burns, who recently beat former champion Tyron Woodley.

Afterward, Masvidal posted a series of tweets criticizing the UFC for its business practices, calling into question whether the relationship would be severed for some time. But once Burns was forced off the card late Friday night, momentum started to build for the original plan, which is a grudge match that has been months in the making. Both Usman and Masvidal have been embroiled in a heated feud which saw the duo get into a shouting match at Super Bowl media row in Miami earlier this year.

On Saturday afternoon, Usman tweeted, "Might be time for the pig to squeal," while Masvidal's co-manager posted a series of Instagram stories showing Masvidal on the phone with the caption "negotiating."

Of course, these days it's not as simple as just agreeing to a fight. Masvidal took and passed a coronavirus antibody test on Saturday afternoon. That test shows whether an individual had been exposed to the coronavirus in the past but doesn't determine whether someone currently has the virus. So, at least one hurdle was cleared then. If the fight ultimately gets signed, they'll have to pass three more coronavirus tests before fight night, as will all the fighters competing in Abu Dhabi this month.

Masvidal is considered one of the most popular fighters in the sport, with many believing he was the 2019 fighter of the year after picking up impressive wins over Darren Till, Ben Askren and Nathan Diaz. In addition to the welterweight title fight, the card also features Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 2 for the featherweight title and Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo for the bantamweight title.

No doubt it was, but Masvidal had all the leverage this time around and I'm almost positive he is fighting for a dollar amount he dictated. Where else was Dana gonna go? Plus this is the fight people really wanted anyway.

Who's your pick to win? I think Usman's got this one. Just needs to be careful with Masvidal's striking. Use the same approach he had versus Woodley last year in winning the title.

Same, I think Usman would have won this one even if Masvidal had proper notice. Like you said, Masvidal's striking is no joke though. I have $50 on the fight just for the hell of it with a buddy of mine.

Dunno man. Masvidal fights with a huge chip on his shoulder and he could one shot Usman. They talk about the ground game but if they never get to the ground I’m thinking Mas. Dude be putting folks to sleep!

Good stuff on the bet with your friend. Yeah - Masvidal's definitely coming in with plenty of confidence. Smart of him to take 2018 off after going 1-2 in 2017. 2019 was an incredible year for him. Knocking out Till ... 3 piece & a soda'ing Edwards backstage ... highlight-reeling Askren in 5 seconds with the knee heard 'round the world ... and bloodying up Diaz in the BMF fight late last year. All the contractual talk(s) / media may have been a distraction since ... but he knows he's in the final run of his career. No one knows how many years he has left. Collect those checks.

As for Usman ... he's the real deal. A tough out for anyone, and 16-1 in his career. He's got the confidence in his cardio/endurance going 25 mins in 3 of his last 4 fights, and nearly the full 25 in his title fight with Covington last December. Plus, he switched up his training and has worked with Wittman lately. He knows his stuff working with the likes of Gaethje, Namajunas, and more. Rounding out their games.

Agreed. It would be something to see him catch Usman in the early rounds. Masvidal's ground work is solid, though Usman has got the edge with overall strength and his wrestling/grappling advantage(s). I'd like to see the fight go 4 - 5 rounds ... assortment of scrambles ... striking ... jiu-jitsu ... underhooks & all that. Fighting to advance for position, etc. Talented guys.

I think Masivdal has the will to win but i think like Khabib, talent will win over will if the other person is not as talented or skilled.

Now Masividal is a puncher and a puncher's chance can always end the fight.

Usman will take this one. He will wrestle and grapple Masvidal to death and not take any chances with any boxing exchanges.

This will be a 5 round decision for Usman.

(But this is MMA and you never know what's going to happen)

Usman will be smart to make him carry his weight too. Especially with the heat and humidity over there. And the odd start time (really early AM). Look to drain Masvidal's explosivity in the first few rounds ...

Hopefully Burns gets his title shot later this year, or in the first or second quarter of 2021. He's deserving after moving up in weight and turning his career around. He's 6-0 since Hooker KO'd him 2 years ago today. He's 8-1 in his last 9 fights.

Dominant decision over Woodley. TKO'ing Maia. 3 other decisions and a submission. Especially with that quick turnaround of defeating Maia & Woodley between mid-March to late-May.

Hooker himself is no joke. 2 fight of the year candidates already in 2020 with the win over Felder, and loss to Poirier.
