I'm in a debate with this chick right now who is saying this......

What is owed? Why should a bunch of people who have never owned a slave owe people WHO WERE NEVER SLAVES money over slavery? The point is It's in the past. Of course people should learn about it. But paying someone reperations for something they themself never went through when the payer didn't even COMIT THE CRIME is pure bullshit. I'm part native american, by your reasoning I could go around demanding white people give me thier land just because my ancestors had theirs stolen.

I wanted to know of the thriving corporations of today that are still benefiting from slavery to site as sources. It's her and a bunch of other whites saying the same thing blah blah blah get over slavery. I know it's been posted here before but I can't find it right now. Can anyone help me with right quick?

Everything that has happened is in the past. So what?
The people who prospered via the terrorism, murder, rape and kidnapping which is slavery still live. The untold families and corporations and even the nation itself owe its current level of prosperity to the profits earned through the sale of human beings and their labor.

North and South became rich through slavery.

They also should pay because ever since slavery ended the government has undermined all efforts for proper redress of past abuses.

Yes, some of the African tribes DID practice Chattel slavery. Some of the ones that assisted the Colonial slave traders not only practiced Chattel slavery but were cannibals. Meaning their victims faced either the dinner plate or servitude, not assimilation. This wasnt the case for all tribes, but then the history your using for your little power trip isnt applicable to all blacks either.

Descendants are NOT the survivor. By survivor, I mean the VICTIM THEMSELVES, the ones that went through the ordeal and lived.

No one who was a slave is alive today. None of their children are.

It wasnt sixty years after the fact that Jews recieved reperations. It was giving to the living victims and the children of those killed.

America is only 231 years old.

Right now I'm telling her that the civil right era alone still holds weight for a means of reparations. She says this.

Those reperations were given directly to the victims. The Jim Crow ordeal of segregation and oppression isnt the same as Genocide and slavery.

And again, they arent the only ones to go through ordeals like that.

Her argument is basically. Since we aren't direct survivors that we shouldn't be able to cash in on reparations like the Japanese, the Jewish, natives. Because we aren't direct survivors of the ordeal and since everyone who has been through slavery is dead then they shouldn't have to pay.

I honestly don't see what the point of reparations would be. Assuming it'd be a decent amount of money, most of us would just buy a bunch of shit move on. Others would invest and make themselves rich. But it wouldn't elevate us as a people. I for one wouldn't feel too great about getting paid for my ancestor's work anyway. It's ridiculous to ask people who didn't own slaves to give money to people who have been free all their lives. We can build ourselves up without extra help from white people.
