Even by the end of his term, Obama still couldn't come to terms with the fact it was racism driving the GOP. He spoke of thinking the "fever" would finally break but it never came. I think he said some along "each time I think the fever would break, they would come up with something else". What he didn't understand was the fever is never going to break.
