Mike Miller is not worried about Steve Stoute
By STEFAN BONDY

Mike Miller doesn’t get diverted.
As the franchise reshuffled around him, the interim coach served as the spokesman whose singular focus remains what few inside MSG care about these days — winning games this season.
In that regard, he’s the antithesis of Steve Stoute, the MSG branding consultant who believes he can turn the Knicks into a success through marketing. Stoute essentially fired Miller on TV, telling ESPN on Tuesday the Knicks will hire a new coach after the season. The interview was arranged by Stoute, not the Knicks, and the marketing mogul had to apologize in a press release for speaking outside his purview.
Miller, who certainly understands his situation as the interim coach, didn’t flinch when asked about Stoute before Wednesday’s game against the Wizards. The coach said he spoke with Stoute at a charity event Tuesday night and wanted to keep the details private.

Like always, Miller kept his tone at the same flat level.
“I’m at ease,” Miller said.
It’s no secret that Miller probably won’t be the head coach of the Knicks next season, but revealing it on TV — even if inadvertently — was foolish. New front offices tend to hire their own staff, especially when the coach in place isn’t under contract.
But Miller has impressed since taking over for David Fizdale in December. Following Wednesday’s ugly 114-96 loss to the Wizards, his record stood at 13-20 — blowing past Fizdale’s 4-18 mark before he was fired. Miller acted as if he’s simply grateful for the opportunity, and coaching without the influence of outside agenda.
Miller’s greatest impact has been on the defense, which, prior to Wednesday, ranked 16th in the league since he took over (it was 25th under Fizdale). Most of the minutes are going to players who don’t have a future in the organization, and that’s not an easy situation to navigate. But there have been two knocks on Miller: 1) the young players — specifically Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. — have not developed much, if at all, under his watch, and 2) the players tend to lose their composure, with Wednesday’s loss — which featured an ejection of Bobby Portis and four techs — being the latest example.
“I don’t really have a reaction to (Stoute’s ESPN interview),” Miller said. “I found out about it from someone else after the fact and didn’t really have a reaction to it. I’m locked in to doing what we do here. We’re getting ready for Washington. My job right now is to get this team ready to play, my focus is on these players.”

There is also the possibility of Miller remaining with the Knicks as an assistant, especially if Jeff Van Gundy becomes the head coach. The two share a mutual respect after coaching together with Team USA in 2018.
Van Gundy and former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau have close ties to Leon Rose, the longtime power agent who’ll lead New York’s basketball operations after finding homes for all his clients and decertifying. Two other coaches associated to Rose are in the college ranks: Kentucky’s John Calipari and Villanova’s Jay Wright.
Van Gundy has been one of Miller’s staunchest supporters and continued Wednesday.
“Mike Miller, to me, deserves every opportunity to finish this season out and win the job and I think anybody plotting as a coach to try to undermine that opportunity is doing it wrong,’’ Van Gundy said on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “In a coaching situation we should all root for each other to be successful because only the people that have manned the head coaching position understand how hard it is to win any single NBA game. And particularly those teams that are stuck in the middle, it is brutal to win games.’’
It’s safe to say Miller, 55, who spent much of his coaching career in small colleges and the G League, isn’t worried about Stoute or his rebrand.
“We’re getting ready to play,” he said. “We’re getting ready to play at MSG. I’m coaching the Knicks tonight. These guys are excited. I’m excited. We get to play basketball. It’s basketball season.”

Nets star can't help himself from destroying Knicks

CHICAGO — Devin Booker and Joel Embiid will have a new agent, and the reps will have big shoes to fill.
They are in the process of losing Creative Artist Agency superstar Leon Rose, who is going to be officially running the Knicks as team president in the coming weeks.
The two superstars gave their full blessing to the Rose hire, saying he has what it takes to be a team president.
“I think he’ll do unbelievable,’’ said Booker, the Suns’ brilliant shooting guard who was a late addition to the All-Star Game, replacing injured Damian Lillard. “One of the most genuine guys I know. One of the most honest guys I know. So I’m happy for him in his new position. I think the Knicks are in really good hands.
“[He’s] very excited,’’ added Booker, who recently signed a five-year extension. “It’s a new challenge. And like I said, he’s willing to take it on. I think he’s going to do an unbelievable job.’’
It’s little wonder Rose got Booker, who fell to 13th in the 2015 draft. Booker’s alliance with Kentucky coach John Calipari is strong. Rose also works with advisor William Wesley behind the scenes. Wesley has no official title at CAA and reportedly will not join Rose with the Knicks but likely would help him out where needed.

Calipari is on record saying he “won’t coach the Knicks’’ but agent/NBA insider David Falk said not to bet against it. Booker has his own viewpoint.
“I would be surprised,’’’ Booker said. “I think Cal is happy where he’s at. He’s done tremendous things for the Kentucky Wildcats and he has a very safe home there. So I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t see it happening. You never know.’’
Embiid, the 76ers’ oft-injured center, says he’ll likely stay with CAA but will miss Rose, who is tying up loose ends with the agency.
“Leon is my guy,’’ Embiid said. “He’s like family to me. When I heard the news I was happy for him. He’s cool. Being an agent for such a long time and getting a GM or a president job I think is amazing. I’m so happy for him. I’m sure he’ll do a good job over there. I think he’s a great human being. He’s going to do a great job.’’

Embiid isn’t seeking a major change with his representation. Rose has about 18 clients.
“Leon did a great job but it’s always been about a collective effort,’’ Embiid said. “It was always Leon but it was always other guys, too. There’s a lot of support there [at CAA]. So I’m happy what they’ve been able to provide for me.’’
The Cameroonian big man has been under heat — he has acknowledged, for stuff like “not loving the game.’’ The Sixers are a disappointment — ranked sixth in the East and Embiid is feeling the heat. Trade speculation has arisen from the struggles. If Embiid were ever on the trading block, to acquire him the Knicks would probably have to give up Mitchell Robinson in any deal.
Saturday, Embiid said Philadelphia is ready to reverse course.
“I’m back to being myself,’’ Embiid said. “I think it starts for me. I’m going to bring that passion back. I haven’ been able to show it [this season] with the hand. I’m back to being myself and having fun.’’

Spike Lee says he won't attend another Knicks game this season after 'being harassed by James Dolan' at MSG
Things got heated after a disagreement over which entrance Lee should be using at Madison Square Garden

Legendary movie director and Knicks superfan Spike Lee has been attending games at Madison Square Garden for 28 years. He has seen some truly awful basketball but has remained a constant fixture in the court-side seats of MSG through the team's ups and downs, always supporting orange and blue. However, after a bizarre dispute before the Knicks' game against the Houston Rockets Monday night, Lee says he won't be attending another game this season.

It should've been a celebratory night for the Knicks after pulling off a huge upset win over the Rockets in which rookie RJ Barrett had the best game of his young career. Plus earlier in the day, the team named Leon Rose as the president of basketball operations. Before the game even started, though, a video purporting to Lee being denied access to the arena blew up on Twitter.
"No one told me!" Lee is heard yelling over and over. "I'm staying right here! Now if you want to arrest me like Charles Oakley, then go ahead!"

Lee's name was trending on Twitter before the game ended, but he was later pictured court side in his usual seats during the game. The Knicks released a statement saying there was confusion about what entrance Lee should be using, and he was not kicked out of the game, but rather redirected. It was treated as one big misunderstanding by the Knicks, but after an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" Tuesday morning, Lee said that not only will he not be attending another Knicks game this season, but that he's being harassed by the team's owner.

"I'm being harassed by James Dolan, and I don't know why," Lee said. "How is it the wrong entrance if I've been using the same entrance for 28 years! It's Garden spin!"

Lee explained what happened last night at the Knicks game that turned into a viral video on Twitter. The director said that after entering the employee entrance to MSG and getting his ticket scanned, security told him that he had to leave the arena and enter on the other side. Lee said Knicks owner James Dolan approached Lee at halftime saying the two needed to talk, but Lee did not want to hear what he had to say.

The Knicks and Dolan have a history of incidents similar to this one at MSG. As Lee references, they once kicked Charles Oakley out of a game, and last season Dolan banned a fan from MSG for life for telling him to sell the team. Monday night was a perfect example of the Knicks being a dysfunctional franchise. It didn't matter that the team beat the Rockets behind the strength of Barrett, because the drama going on behind the scenes became the story. The situation is magnified even more since Lee is the most recognizable Knicks fan there and is essentially a free marketing tool for the franchise.

When "First Take" told Lee that he's spent nearly $10 million over 30 years of his Knicks fandom -- $300,000 per season -- Lee jokingly said he "looks stupid" considering the lack of success and the level of dysfunction within the Knicks franchise. Still, though, as long as situations like this continue within the Knicks organization -- mainly because of Dolan -- this team will continue to be the laughingstock of the league.
