What you described would have been murder and you would have been charged.
Castle law does not protect you from people simple outside your home. Knocking on your door is not a crime.
Once you opened the door, you proved that you were no longer in danger.

Protecting oneself if in danger is understandable but this guy wasn't to the point, or any point, that he had to pull a gun and through mishap or mistake blow somebody's head off for merely wanting to meet to discuss matters that if discussed some agreement probably could have been reached.
