Michael B. Jordan Superhero Family Drama 'Raising Dion' Set at Netflix

Following more than a year-long process, Netflix is moving forward with superhero family drama Raising Dion.

Based on the short film and comic book of the same name from commercial/music video director Dennis Liu, the 10-episode drama is about an African-American single mother who discovers her young son has multiple and constantly changing abilities.

The series follows single mother Nicole Reese, who raises her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several magical, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat, and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.

Michael B. Jordan is attached to exec produce and appear in the series. Carol Barbee (Unreal, Judging Amy), who penned the pilot, will serve as showrunner and exec produce. Liu will exec produce and direct the pilot. Jordan exec produces via his Outlier Society Productions banner. Macro's Charles D. King, Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks will exec produce alongside Kenny Goodman and Michael Green (Logan, American Gods). The series is produced in-house at Netflix and comes as the streamer continues to make a push for ownership. The streaming giant will distribute the series in more than 190 countries around the world. A premiere date has not yet been determined.

“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I'm excited to partner with Netflix, who I know shares that commitment," Liu said. "More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry."

Added Cindy Holland, vp originals at Netflix: "We haven’t seen this type of superhero story before — an origin myth full of imagination, wonder and adventure, all grounded in the experiences of a modern single mother. Michael B. Jordan is an exciting and dynamic talent, and I’m excited to see him, Macro, Carol and the team translate Dennis’ unique vision to television."

Rumblings about Raising Dion first surfaced in April 2016, with Liu and a different producing team attached and a series pickup pending pilot script approval. As of last October, Judy McCreary (Law & Order: SVU) was initially attached as showrunner. However, when'80s sci-fi drama Stranger Things — featuring Millie Bobby Brown's kid-with-powers character Eleven — hit, a decision was made to retool Raising Dion to avoid any potential overlap with Netflix's breakout hit. McCreary then exited and Barbee — who briefly ran Lifetime's Unreal — was brought in to rework it. Following a short writers' room hiatus, the drama was back on track as of November 2016. Jordan joined at the start of 2017. Casting started in February, though Jordan remains the only on-screen actor set to appear in the series.

Raising Dion comes as Netflix has found success with its Marvel partnership. The comic book powerhouse has delivered a slate of superheroes including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, miniseries The Defenders as well as the upcoming Punisher.

For Jordan, meanwhile, the Creed actor has continued to push into producing for the small screen. The actor has an overall deal at Skydance Television (though Raising Dion is outside of that pact) and has developed multiple projects. This is first series pickup as an EP. His TV acting roles include Parenthood, Friday Night Lights and The Wire. He next appears in HBO's Fahrenheit 451 TV movie, which he also exec produces. On the big screen, his roles include Marvel-inspired feature Fantastic Four. He's repped by WME, MGMT Entertainment and Bloom Hergott. Barbee is with WME and Hansen Jacobson.

Trying to figure out his powers. He may be a cross between Legion, Nate Richards and a telekinetic elemental anomaly? Darkchild? Magik? (Rasputin) As a child, he appears to be raw in his limits. Good look so far

Michael B Jordan aint gonna end up BEING the storm is he?
nah, doesn't look like it. i'm up to episode 7 and don't see that happening.
but
i think there is something up with the little girl in a wheelchair
The white dude helping raise him is a no for me
he's not really helping raise him, he only sees him once a week, maybe. after about 7 episodes, they've only been together about 3 or 4 times.

Well we got to have a white savior somehow... i try my best to overlook shit sometimes... just to hear our story being told... but i definitely get your point bruh!!

It's a good show, but I can't say the two white saviors dont slightly turn me off. At least the woman savior is a good actress.

It reminds me of Looper as far as the superpowered kid.

I definitely agree...but i just got done watching it...i see the point with whites, but on another note why the best friend gotta be gay...

Only on episode 7, but I wonder if Pat is connected to the cloud and doesn't realize it.

Also, Pat is beyond breaking man code.

I think he agrees with you

I get where he is coming from, but it doesn't seem like he watched the complete series. I have a slight issue with the white savior thing, but mother being a negative influence on the sons development isn't 100% accurate.

Man or woman I think the initial behavior of the mom would be in character for most if this were to happen in the real world. The story doesn't take place in a world where superpowers are the norm. Who would encourage their kid to do things that could potentially make them a lab rat.

Damn I'm not that hyped about peeping it now....

Watch it and judge for yourself. It's not perfect and I'm not a fan of the savior thing either ,but it's not as bad as he is making it out to be either.

Even listening to him talk about other series, he seems to want his ideals of what black is on display. We are not all the same, so saying a black artist (comments about Black Panther) isn't good enough because the artist may be controlled by white overlords is disrespectful.

Did no one notice the mom's foine ass?
When she wore the biz attire and was in the hosp, I was like dizzamn! Body was on point..

No gifs in the thread, is this BGOL?

Yea I may if we want it any other way we have to do it ourselves...

I'll give it a shot

Bruh i had to sit back for a second and think about the message it did speak to to people..black woman yeah shes a widow but shes single.. and her savior which is her dead husband best friend is white. Her best friend is black but gay. Her cool friend she used to dance with is black and own his own business but he is also gay! Thats a real negative ass view..but the kid perspective is i guess... the true power of the mind! The mind is all the universe is mentwl!

The sister was also gay. Given the current state of the world that has more to do with the current agenda of some people to attempt to normalize what is considered abnormal. The gay agenda probably would have happened even if this was a full white cast.

Did you see "The Boys"? Yes, the gay themes were a part of the original comic, but was it really needed in the show. They made a few changes for the show and could have easily changed that too especially with Mave's character.

I dont want to spoil it, but I'm happy Pat was white. Otherwise some of you would really be pissed.

I didn't watch the entire video, but my other issue with it was it gave the impression that the father wasn't around in the traditional deadbeat or died from his negative actions way. The father was a well respected scientist who loved his family and sacrificed himself for someone else. Even without the father around he influenced his son to pursue science.

This comment has nothing to do with the video, but I'm getting tired of black people complaining about a lack of diversity with how we are portrayed and at the same time turn out in full force for shows like The Wire and Power. When was the last time you heard people at work or in your personal life talk about a show like Blackish.

Dude was never really a savior character. They made it clear from the first ep he was a boarder line incel. If it wasn't for the fact he was her husband's best friend and he was really good with kid, she wouldn't have given him the time of day.

The only time she ever called him for anything is if she needed a favor for Dion.
