HBO is Leaving Boxing After 45 Years, Network Announces

According to an article in the New York Times, HBO is officially leaving boxing after 45 years.

HBO Sports Executive Vice President Peter Nelson made the announcement that HBO was dropping boxing Thursday morning in a meeting with the HBO Boxing production staff.

“This is not a subjective decision,” Nelson said to the New York Times. “Our audience research informs us that boxing is no longer a determinant factor for subscribing to HBO.”

HBO has faced stiff competition with Top Rank leaving the network for an exclusive long term deal with ESPN.

When Top Rank left, the network lost rising fighters like Terence Crawford, Vasyl Lomachenko and numerous others.

And Showtime significantly expanded their boxing coverage, with top fighters like Deontay Wilder, Errol Spence and Mikey Garcia making SHO their home.

Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom has also arrived with new streaming service DAZN, and nearly every boxer is his stable - including several that were featured on HBO - will be exclusively featured on the network.

Premier Boxing Champions, which boasts a massive stable of over 100 contracted fighters, also signed multi-year deals with FOX and Showtime to provide boxing content on a regular basis.

HBO has also faced declining ratings over the last few years. Their recent Super Fly 3 tripleheader - which took place on September 8 - peaked at 349,000 viewers, making it one of the lowest-rated live televised event in the network's history.

HBO's two biggest stars, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, became network free agents after their recent HBO Pay-Per-View rematch two weeks ago in Las Vegas.

Nelson left the door open for a potential "special" one-time event - if the fight was big enough.

“There’s plenty of boxing out there,” Nelson said. “But what we have not seen is a lot of signature destination fights.”

“Because of our association with boxing, people forget that we’re not a sports network. We’re a storytelling platform.”

“I’m still a fan of boxing. If there is a destination event, absolutely we’re in that conversation.”

Boxing has slipped down so far I'm really not surprised. The last fight I watched and paid for was Mayweather against Pac. The boxers today don't have what it takes to generate interest in their fights.

Not to mention again the supposed rematch between Mayweather against Pacquiao. Seriously do either of them think people are going to see them dancing and hugging each other again? Not to mention that Mayweather-Pacquiao fight did nothing to improve interest in boxing.

Sad I've been a boxing fan since the time when boxing aired every week Friday Night Fights on ABC, yeah free TV. Back in the black & white days. But today there's little interest.

there is plenty of good young talent in the sport right now and this year there have been plenty of great fights. Fox just put up a huge investment to put fights on primetime so the sport ain't going anywhere.

This Needs to Come Back

First this new head of HBO axed all shows with strong sexual content like "Taxicab Confession" and "Real Sex", now he's doing away with boxing.
Guess the weak ass, no pussy getting clown is trying to turn Home Box Office into Home Boring Office. :smh:

Welp this will save me some money on my DTV bill because the ONLY reason why I subscribe to both HBO and Shotime is strictly for boxing. Aside from no more boxing on HBO, I wonder where my boy Max gonna go. Most likely ESPN since he's already on First Take. I already got ESPN+ so its all good. I bet they raise their price from $4.99 a month to at least $9.99-$14.99.

Fox may actually be trying to save boxing. Boxing ratings have been slipping. An yeah I know there's talent out there but the interest isn't what it once was. This is one time I'm actually pulling for Fox. I don't want to see boxing disappear.

That was my shit

Al Bernstein, Al Albert, Sean O' Grady and Bill Macatee
I was TIGHT when that shit went away
So Was I....This Show Gave People a Look at Alot of Future Champions On the Come Up...You Literally Got to See the Whole -Started From the Bottom Now We Here- On a Weekly Basis

Their whole stable is gone so might as well. Showtime was killing them for years, plus with pbc and now ESPN signed with top rank it was inevitable.

It's actually dope. I havent jumped all the way in it but as far as watching the Pacquio fight and the last Crawford fight, it was flawless as far as HD stream. Just streamed it through my Roku with zero issues. I watched them Duke games with Zion and those played perfect as well. No complaints for only $4.99. I'm sure they have a lot of archived classics to peep but like I said, I havent really explored it like that.

Maybe you aren't into the sport like you once were, but the interest is still there as evidenced by the Canelo/GGG ppv buys, and boxing being back on non-premium channels.

The sport isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Lol yeah Mayweather was straight selfish and I don't blame him

He and Paq just snatched that bag and pissed off the entire public after all that hype lmao

Either of them could've given some.of that shiny to Thurman, or and of those new wave guys- but those guys are BOOOOOORING

Boxing needs stars, plain and simple. Only reason we're watching a lot of these new guys is because we grew up watching boxing and we are residual fans.

Thurman? That nigga did nothing to elevate his status to make himself worthy. And this is coming from someone that was a fan. Spence got the rub by giving Floyd a black eye in sparring.

That's why I said all of em are BOORING. The only one with personality is Broner and he ain't it. HBO signed him but he couldn't cut it at the real weight that mattered
