At least 39 fires, explosions in Lawrence Mass.

Dozens of fires and explosions broke out in Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover Thursday afternoon, and State Police advised all residents in those communities who get their gas service from Columbia Gas to evacuate their homes immediately.

“Gas lines are currently being depressurized by the company,” but it will “take some time,” State Police said in a tweet. Electricity to all three communities was being shut off.

The mayor of Lawrence asked all residents of the South Lawrence area to evacuate due to the power shutoff, not just Columbia Gas customers in the area, State Police said.

One more system that could be hacked with devastating effects...

Yep. I remember watching a show on fox as a kid where they explained that the most effective way launch a terrorist attack would be to attack the gas lines connected to homes. It would set off a chain reaction whereby every house on every street connected to that line would explode. Now imagine thousands of homes exploding seconds after the other... It was that show the covered UFOs and other phenomena...

Listening to Rachael Maddow.

She reported that the gas company is in the process of upgrading natural gas lines.

This is basically a “Flint, MI” situation to some degree.

Actually it's everywhere. Our infrastructure is old as fuck. WWII old and older......mf got blown up and didn't get no type of warning. Meh, circle of life

Several suspected gas explosions caused fires in Massachusetts 00:47
(CNN)A man was killed as a series of explosions and fires rocked nearly 40 homes and businesses in three Massachusetts towns on Thursday, according to the Essex County District Attorney's office.

Leonel Rondon, 18, was inside a car in Lawrence, Massachusetts, when a chimney fell on the vehicle, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman with the Essex County District Attorney's office said.
He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later died.
Authorities said that an issue with gas service may have prompted several explosions in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover late Thursday afternoon, leaving at least 10 people injured.
The fires stretched across dozens of blocks, Massachusetts State Police said. Not all gas had been shut off by Thursday evening and some of the lines were overpressurized, officials said.
"This has been an overwhelming event," Andover Fire Rescue Chief Michael B. Mansfield told reporters. "I have been in the fire service for almost 39 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career. ... It looked like Armageddon, it really did."
There was no immediate information available about the extent of the damage. "Far too early to speculate on cause" of the explosions, authorities said.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene. Lawrence resident Ra Nam told CNN affiliate WCVB that a boiler in his house caught fire. Minutes later, a loud boom came from his neighbor's home. Three people rushed out.
Lawrence General Hospital received 10 patients, one of whom was in critical condition and one listed as serious, according to spokeswoman Jill Halsey. One patient was transferred. Andover officials said a firefighter was among the injured.
Firefighters put out 35 fires in Andover, town officials said. The cities are north of Boston.

"Incidents are across a wide swath of dozens of blocks across Lawrence and North Andover," state police said via Twitter. There were at least 70 responses to fire, explosions and gas odor reports. State police said some neighborhoods were evacuated because of gas odors.
Columbia Gas earlier Thursday put out a news release saying it was upgrading natural gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, with a focus on enhanced safety features. Andover, North Andover and Lawrence projects were included.
Residents in the area who have service from Columbia Gas "should evacuate their homes immediately," state police said.
Gas lines were being depressurized by the company. The utility said its thoughts are "with everyone affected by today's incident." It said it was conducting safety checks and supporting first responders.
Officials were shutting down power in Lawrence, North Andover and Andover because of the emergency, state police said on Thursday evening. About 18,000 customers were without power.
The explosions and emergency response caused Amtrak to cancel four train routes between Boston and Maine. Passengers on three were being moved by bus.
All the state offices will be closed and nonemergency employees have been asked to stay home Friday in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, state officials said.
Firefighters battle a house fire on Herrick Road in North Andover.
A residence in Lawrence is reduced to mostly rubble Thursday.
Lawrence Councilor Marc Laplante said residents of South Lawrence also are being evacuated.
A middle school in North Andover and a senior center in Andover were set up for evacuees, according to the agency. Andover officials asked residents and businesses in gas-serviced neighborhoods to evacuate. Schools are closed Friday in Lawrence and Andover.
Residence halls and academic buildings at Merrimack College were evacuated, according to Jim Chiavelli, chief of staff for the college president. Students were waiting outside buildings for the gas to be shut off.
Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera estimated there are between 20 and 25 fires across the city, according to WCVB.
Gas service was interrupted for 250 customers in Lawrence last month "due to hit line by a third party," according to Columbia Gas.
The National Transportation Safety Board will send a team to the area on Friday.
CNN's Lauren del Valle, Phil Gast, Rob Frehse and Taylor Romine contributed to this report.

Teen killed by falling chimney during Massachusetts gas explosions

massachusetts-victim.jpg

Leonel Rondon

Authorities identified the 18-year-old killed when a series of gas explosions rocked a string of Boston suburbs on Thursday.

Leonel Rondon, from Lawrence, Mass., was sitting inside a car when an explosion toppled a chimney that crashed into that vehicle, officials said.

Rondon only recently got his driver’s license and was sitting in the car with two pals, loved ones told WHDH.

They appeared to be inside a Honda sports utility vehicle, in a driveway with a nearby basketball hoop when the blast happened and toppled the brick chimney.

Rondon was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital and pronounced dead at about 8:30 p.m., officials said.

His two friends remained hospitalized on Thursday night.

“Mr. Rondon was inside a car near 35 Chickering Rd in Lawrence when a chimney from a house explosion fell on the car,” according to a statement from the Essex County DA’s office.

'It looked like Armageddon.' Homes burn in Massachusetts towns after suspected gas explosions
By Nicole Chavez, CNN

Updated 4:00 AM ET, Fri September 14, 2018

Several suspected gas explosions caused fires in Massachusetts 00:47
(CNN)Homes in three towns north of Boston went up in flames on Thursday, consumed by more than 60 suspected gas fires.

One house exploded, sending the chimney flying. It crashed into a nearby car, fatally wounding a teenager who was inside. Leonel Rondon, 18, and two of his friends were in the car when the debris struck, his family told CNN affiliate WHDH. He later died in the hospital, authorities said.
In Lawrence, Massachusetts, a boiler inside Ra Nam's house caught fire, he told CNN affiliate WCVB.
Minutes later, he said he heard a loud booming sound from his neighbor's house. Three people rushed out.
About 25 people, including two firefighters, were wounded, officials said.
"This has been an overwhelming event," Andover Fire Rescue Chief Michael B. Mansfield told reporters. "I have been in the fire service for almost 39 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career. ... It looked like Armageddon, it really did."
Firefighters battle a house fire on Herrick Road in North Andover.
The blazes left 8,000 people unable to go home on Thursday. A middle school in North Andover and a senior center in Andover were set up for evacuees, according to the state police.
Schools will be closed Friday in Lawrence and Andove. All state offices in all three towns will be also closed, and nonemergency employees have been asked to stay home.
Thousands can't go home
Information about the full extent of the damage was not immediately available Thursday evening, and authorities cautioned that it was "far too early to speculate" on the cause of the explosions.
Earlier on Thursday, before the fires broke out, the utility company that services the area announced it would be upgrading natural gas lines in neighborhoods across the state.
"Weather permitting, work will take place Monday through Friday," Columbia Gas said in a statement. Andover, North Andover and Lawrence were included in the planned projects.
Residents were evacuated from 8,000 homes on Thursday.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said he urged Columbia Gas to develop a "comprehensive safety inspection plan."
"We'll work with the federal government and others to investigate how this occurred and hold the appropriate parties accountable for their actions," Baker said.
The explosions and emergency response caused Amtrak to cancel four train routes between Boston and Maine. Passengers on three were being moved by bus.
The National Transportation Safety Board will send a team to the area on Friday.
Gas, power shut off
Gas technicians and first responders were going door-to-door reviewing thousands of homes in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover and shutting down gas mains as residents wait in shelters.
Officials were also shutting down power in the three towns, state police said on Thursday evening. About 18,000 customers were without power.
A residence in Lawrence is reduced to mostly rubble Thursday.
In a statement released Thursday night, Columbia Gas said only that crews were responding to multiple fires in the area.
"The first priority for our crews at the scene is to ensure the safety of our customers and the community by supporting first responders and completing safety checks on our system and in the surrounding area," the utility company said in the statement.
It also said its thoughts are "with everyone affected by today's incident."
Gas service had been interrupted for 250 customers in Lawrence last month due to a "hit line by a third party," according to Columbia Gas.
CNN's Rob Frehse contributed to this report.
