The upcoming season of “The Big Bang Theory” will be the last for the Warner Bros.-produced CBS comedy.

In a joint statement, Warner Bros. Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions said, “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

The decision comes less than three weeks after CBS Entertainment head Kelly Kahl said the network and WBTV were discussing continuing the show beyond Season 12.

“We don’t believe it’s the final year,” Kahl said. “We are in preliminary discussions to renew the show with Warner Bros.”

In a statement Wednesday, Kahl said, “‘The Big Bang Theory’ has been the defining comedy of its generation. All of us at the Network take exceptional pride in this series that uniquely combines creative genius, commercial ratings success, cultural influence and characters who became so popular, they are easily known by just one name. We’re incredibly grateful for our partnership with Warner Bros., Chuck Lorre Productions and a brilliant cast and crew that has made such a ‘big bang’ and lasting legacy on the television landscape.”

Series star Johnny Galecki also said back in January that he and the cast would be comfortable ending the show with Season 12.

“The only way we’ve discussed wrapping the show is we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” he said. “I think at this point everyone is very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”

“Big Bang” was renewed for Seasons 11 and 12 last year, with the five original members of the series ensemble — Jim Parsons, Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg — all striking new deals. The previously mentioned stars are said to have taken pay cuts in order to free up funds for pay increases for newer stars Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.

The show remains a major force not just on CBS but across all of television. Season 11 averaged a 2.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 14 million viewers an episode in Live+Same Day and was frequently the top shows in Live+7 as well. It is exec produced by Lorre, Bill Prady, Steven Molaro and Steve Holland.

According to sources close the show, the decision not to pursue additional seasons came down largely to timing. Warner Bros. contracts with CBS and with the cast members all expired with the upcoming season, and the appetite for another grueling round of negotiations on all sides was dim. Previous negotiations with the series’ stars took months, with the original five cast members eventually agreeing to a slight pay cut to allow to facilitate raises for fellow actors Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.

Jim Parsons, who has won four Emmys for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper on the show, had also signaled that he was ready to move on. His is departure would have meant a massive reconfiguration of the series, one that producers were reluctant to undertake.

Ultimately, the principal parties decided that it would be the right to end the show while it was still a strong ratings performer.

Kunal Nayyar Is 'Still Trying to Process' News Of 'Big Bang Theory' Ending (Exclusive)

The Big Bang Theory will soon be coming to an end, and it's proving to be an emotional time for the show's longtime stars.

Kunal Nayyar, who has starred as particle astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali throughout the entire run of the show, opened up to ET at Clayton Kershaw's 6th Annual Ping Pong 4 Purpose charity fundraiser at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday, about coming to terms with the show's imminent conclusion.

"It's bittersweet obviously. I'm ready for the next phase of my life [after] 12 years, yet at the same time I'm sad to be saying goodbye to my family," the 37-year-old actor shared. "It just happened yesterday so I'm still trying to process all of it."

The Big Bang Theory has made up the majority of Nayyar's career and has been a primary component in the lives of many of his co-stars. Which is why there are so many memories he'll treasure from his time on the show, and so many opportunities he's gotten that have changed his life.

"I never knew that I would be in a position to change people's lives. Like, 12 years ago, I was like, 'Oh my god! I have a job!' And now, [I'm] in a position where I've been able to change people's lives for the better and make people laugh in a world that is so polarized."

"[Having the opportunity] to inspire kids to study science, to become astrophysicists and to help people who are sick, whose last wish was to come and spend time with the cast, those things are all the things that I'm going to hold onto really," Nayyar added.

Despite the show's still-massive ratings, CBS announced on Wednesday that the long-running multi-camera comedy series would be coming to an end, leaving dedicated fans devastated.

However, Nayyar told ET that this upcoming season will do the show justice and give the fans some of the strongest episodes yet.

"It's going to be the greatest season we're ever gonna do," Nayyar promised. "Actually, the last taping is on my birthday so it's going to be an interesting night."

Following CBS's surprising announcement, rumors began to swirl that the network pulled the plug after star Jim Parsons -- who reportedly takes home $1 per episode -- decided he wanted to leave the series.

While Nayyar didn't address those reports directly, the actor said that there's nothing but love between the cast members, and their friendship is what's kept the show running for over a 250 episodes.

"We're family, we've spent a lot of time together, we were there when we found out together and we're there to support each other, and that's all there is to it really,' he shared. "That's why we've survived for this long, because we love each other and we're a family."

“The Big Bang Theory” actress Mayim Bialik added her voice to the chorus of cast members publicly lamenting the announcement from CBS that the upcoming Season 12 of the hit sitcom will be its last.

Bialik, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler on the show, took to her personal website, Groknation, to explain her feelings on the job that she’s done for several years ending.

“Am I happy? Of course not. This has been my job since Melissa Rauch and I joined the cast as regulars in Season 4. I love my job. I love my castmates, and I feel such appreciation for our incredible crew, our brave writers, our entire staff, and our amazing fans. So many people are a part of our ‘Big Bang’ family,” she said. “This is hard. I love coming to work and pretending to be Amy. She’s a riot. She’s me, and I am her. And soon she will not be mine to create.”

The star, 42, noted that her number one job is to be a mother to her two sons. However, she wanted to express how sad she is to see her “paying job” end after all this time.

“Being an actor is profoundly humbling, incredibly gratifying, and terribly complex. Being an employed actor on what is the #1 comedy in America is unbelievable,” Bialik wrote. “And the fact that so many people consider us a part of their lives and families is powerful. I don’t take any of it for granted.”

Bialik is joined by co stars Kaley Cuoco and Jim Parsons, who each shared their thoughts on the show ending by way of statements on their personal Instagram accounts.

Jim Parsons Pens Letter to Fans & Cast After Big Bang Theory Cancellation

The actor behind Sheldon Cooper, Jim Parsons, has written an emotional letter to the fans and cast of The Big Bang Theory following the announcement that the show would be coming to an end. Set to air its 12th and final season next month, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's The Big Bang Theory tells the story of four geeks who gradually learn to interact outside of their own individual comfort zones, largely thanks to the appearance of a waitress/aspiring actress called Penny who befriends the group. The sitcom has become one of the most popular and successful comedy series of all time, picking up numerous Emmy gongs along the way and launching the spinoff series Young Sheldon in 2017.

This week however, it was announced that The Big Bang Theory would be brought to a close, the reason for which reportedly being that actor Parsons was unwilling to renew his contract and that producers felt the show could not continue without the presence of Sheldon Cooper. Several actors have already publicly addressed the news, with Mayim Bialik, who plays Sheldon's wife on the show, expressing her sadness at the decision.

Parsons himself has now spoken out about the end of The Big Bang Theory by posting an emotional letter to both fans and fellow cast members on his Instagram. Alongside a picture of the main cast, Parsons writes:

"It is hard (nearly impossible actually) to really accept that this is a picture of the first of the final 24 episodes we will shoot for The Big Bang Theory. I feel very fortunate that we have another 23 episodes to shoot this season because I am hopeful that with each and every one, my level of REALLY accepting this fact will sink in. Something else I feel grateful for - and this gratitude needs no time to "sink in" or becoming more "realized;" this grateful feeling is always with me but is multiplied in this moment of us announcing our final season - but I feel such intense gratitude for our devoted viewers who are the ACTUAL reason we have been graced with the opportunity to explore these characters for 12 years of our lives.

I feel grateful to our crew - many, many of whom have been with us since day one - and who are the people who bring a sense of steadiness and dependability, who are so warm and kind and always quick to say hello and smile at us every time we come to the set and who, even though you don't see them on TV, are in many ways the real and steady heartbeat that keeps this body of work alive and breathing while we, like flailing arms and legs, act like jackasses and fools in attempt to make someone laugh.

I am grateful to all the writers of the show - those with us now and those that have come and gone - because, without them, there would literally be no Big Bang Theory at all, ever. The writers thought of this show, the writers created these characters, the writers are the ones who found ways to keep coming up with organic, entertaining ways to keep the life of this show going which is a task much, much more challenging than anyone other than them will ever know or understand.

And while I know that they already know it, it bears repeating again and again: I am so terribly grateful for the cast in this picture and the cast members who aren't pictured here - whether they were in one scene or many episodes along the way; you are all my playmates that I have fallen in love with and who have become a part of my life on set and off. You are my playmates when we don't feel like playing but have to because it's our job to get out there and communicate and pretend we're these other fictional people and we look into each other's eyes and say these words and end up creating this weird, other reality that has enriched my life more than I will ever fully understand. I will miss of all you and all of this more than I can say and more than I can know at this time."

The letter certainly covers all bases as far as thanking fans and colleagues goes and given how long Parsons, and indeed many of the cast, have been playing these roles, it's understandable that the end of The Big Bang Theory is taking an emotional toll on those involved. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Parsons doesn't address whether or not it was his decision to leave the show that triggered this situation, nor does he offer any clear reasons as to why he wanted out. His comment regarding the writers having a tough challenge in keeping the show constantly fresh could be a subtle hint, however.

In either case, this move has arguably been on the cards for quite some time. Over recent seasons, there have been numerous reports of contract disputes between the core cast of The Big Bang Theory, with actors supposedly coming close to walking away on several occasions. The Big Bang Theory has also come under increasing scrutiny from viewers and has been frequently criticized for a formulaic approach and a lack of original ideas in later seasons. Some even feel that the show too often relies on stereotypes of geek culture, race or medical conditions such as Asperger's syndrome as the source of its humor.

Kaley Cuoco Addresses Big Bang Theory's Ending, Shares New Cast Photo

Kaley Cuoco addresses the announcement that The Big Bang Theory will end its run after the incoming season 12 with an emotional message. Playing Penny in the hit sitcom, Cuoco is among the four original characters of the show and was the only female cast members until Melissa Rauch's Bernadette and Mayim Bialik were made series regulars by season 4.

In a shocking turn of events, CBS and Warner Bros. announced that The Big Bang Theory's 12th season will be its final one. This follows comments from CBS Entertainment head Kelly Kahl earlies this month that they were having internal talks about possibly ordering season 13. It's unclear why the sitcom is no longer continuing considering that it remains a hit ratings-wise, averaging a 2.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 14 million viewers an episode in Live+Same Day for its 24-episode 11th season. It was so popular that even spawned a prequel spinoff, Young Sheldon, which follows the early years of Jim Parsons' fan-favorite character, Sheldon Cooper.

Cuoco took to her official Instagram account to open up about the announcement that the upcoming outing of The Big Bang Theory will be its last. Posting a cast photo, the actress wrote a heartfelt caption admitting that she always knew that she'll be heartbroken when the time comes that the show will finally be ending. That said, she promises that she and the rest of the cast and crew of the hit sitcom will make sure that season 12 will be the best for those who have supported them throughout their run. Prior to the emotional post, Cuoco also shared a brand new on-set photo with all of her castmates. Check out both images below.

Given that it'll be The Big Bang Theory's final hurrah, fans of Penny and Leonard will like nothing more than see the two's relationship progress. Since they got married, it seemed like their story was cast aside to favor other character trajectories in the series - an odd thing considering that they are The Big Bang Theory's principal couple. It was the two's relationship that covered the romance angle in the series long before Howard and Sheldon got together with Bernadette and Amy. At one point, the show even addressed their married life's lack of progress seeing that until now, they seem to not want to have a baby.

Of course, another thing that the show needs to answer before it wraps up is Penny's still-unknown last name. For 11 seasons, Cuoco's character has always just been called Penny. She became Penny Hofstadter when she married Leonard, but The Big Bang Theory never really revealed her maiden name. It's curious if the people behind the show has plans to reveal it, but loyal viewers will surely appreciate knowing it before the sitcom bids farewell.

never got into that...especially after seeing a clip of it with the laugh track taken out

There's a lot of shit left out. Its a Tv show for crying out loud with a 23 second theme Song. Themes songs are going away in favor of more commercials. Hill street Blues had 1:20 second Theme song. Welcome Back Kotter actually played a minute plus of its theme song at the beginning and the end of the show. Something you not gonna see in prime time today unless its pay TV. Even daytime TV cut back on theme song time. Surviving Soaps like Y&R and Days don't play the full themes like they used. My Mom watched them both and some days they would play the complete themes or most to get more credits in. I don't think they do that much now...

Kaley Cuoco Is ‘Drowning in Tears’ Thanks to The Big Bang Theory Ending

Maybe, just maybe, after 12 seasons, we’ll finally find out Penny’s last name. (Our money’s on “Smith”!) With The Big Bang Theory officially set to bow out on CBS in May after a remarkable 279 episodes, one of the show’s “big three,” Kaley Cuoco, has penned a note on Instagram showing equal parts shock and gratitude that the end is near. “This ride has been a dream come true and as life changing as it gets. No matter when it was going to end, my heart would have always been broken in two,” she wrote. “Drowning in tears, we promise to bring you the best season yet. To the fans, our crew, families, Chuck Lorre, Warner Brothers, CBS, and everyone who has supported us for so many years, thank you. We are going out with a bang.” Cuoco’s character, Penny, has settled into domestic bliss with Leonard (Johnny Galecki) at this point, and, since we’re in a gambling mood, we’d be willing to bet Penny becomes pregnant sometime this season. That, or the two get divorced and fake-eat in peace. Equally good options!

Fellow lead Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon, also wrote a thoughtful Instagram message to mark the end of an era. “Something else I feel grateful for — and this gratitude needs no time to ‘sink in’ or become more ‘realized’; this grateful-feeling is always with me but is multiplied in this moment of us announcing our final season — but I feel such intense gratitude for our devoted viewers who are the actual reason,” he wrote, “we have been graced with the opportunity to explore these characters for 12 years of our lives.” Let the race to find its sitcom replacement begin. You up, Modern Family?

This is a business
Consider a boxer that can’t run their miles, cut that weight, take those blows to the head, constantly starving yourself and the hours in gym when you got nothing else To prove and all the money you can spend. Another fights for $10 mil to a dude with $200 mil is different to a guy without even a 100k. They each got $100 mil at least of that show.
