“We were paying homage to people and artists we love and respect– it’s that simple!” reality star says

After Kim Kardashian’s Aaliyah Halloween costume drew some backlash from fans, the reality star apologized on Friday.

“Aaliyah was such an amazing singer and she will forever be a music legend,” Kim wrote on her website, according to E! Online. “I saw online that some people thought my costume was in poor taste and I am truly sorry if that offended anyone. When I was creating the costume, I wasn’t dressing up as a race or culture but rather as a woman whom I will always admire.”

She continued, “I play every kind of genre of music in my home and I like for my kids to be exposed to many different artists. For me, it’s always about love and respect. I loved that Kourtney was Michael Jackson for one of her costumes, and that my son was Axl Rose. We don’t see color in my home. We were paying homage to people and artists we love and respect– it’s that simple!”

Kardashian West’s re-creation of the diamond bikini outfit worn by the late singer in the video for her 2000 smash hit “Try Again,” was met with a mixture of brutal scorn and tepid support.

Fans of Aaliyah, who died at 22 in a place crash in 2001, accused Kardashian West of essentially wearing blackface, while fans of the reality star had her back.

On the flip side, a bunch of her other followers think people are just looking for a reason to hate on her. As one user so nicely put it, “Oh stop complaining — find a hobby.”

Other costumes worn by Kardashian this year included Cher and Selena Quintanilla, the latter of which also drew mixed reactions from fans.

I honestly thought the criticism was because Aaliyah is dead and didn't imagine it was because she was black.

Calling that costume blackface disrespects the seriousness of what blackface was and the historical cultural debasement of blacks. This simply is not the same shit.

I thought she pulled the costume off really well.

Nothing to apologize for in my book.

Just this overly PC society at play again.

Wrong. She got dragged online for "cultural appropriation."
Which in the case, was not the case, especially sans 'blackface.'

Yeah normally I take issue with this but it’s not like Kim Kardashian didn’t have a mini-fro as a baby. I always feel odd calling cultural appropriateness with other ethnicities. Areminians and Africans both come from Africa.

The real discussion needs to be about why her lower half looks like Pops from Regular show.

Kim missed the point of her drag. Her drag was because she was imitating a black woman (like usually) and getting attention from it when black women have wore the same "costume" and received no attention from it. Black women do it,no attention. White woman do it and she's the most dopest woman walking on the planet. I don't think people realize how tired we are of being imitated by white women. It's not flattering...it's down right disrespectful at this point.

Shut the fuck up, Craig.

Protecting the white woman because you're flattered she wants to fuck you? Break away from those chains that you must be desirable because a white woman wants to fuck you.

Fuck You for giving her a pass because she's white.

She shouldn't have acknowledged those who were bitching and crying. It's fucking halloween and she didn't use blackface. I don't even like the kardashians, but bitch shit is bitch shit.

Wish folks would stop giving sensitive fucks power. :smh:
